Invite named accounts when you want access limited to specific people; a shareable link is easier but can be forwarded. For a few pictures, a private conversation may be simpler. Instagram Instants is another lightweight option inside Instagram, not a separate replacement for it.

Google Photos: convenient for mixed-device groups
Google Photos can work well when friends use different kinds of phones or need to view an album on the web. You can share with particular Google Accounts or use a shareable link. Whether others can contribute depends on the album’s collaboration settings. Google’s instructions for sharing photos and videos are at Google Photos Help.

Use account invitations for a limited audience
If the group should consist of specific people, invite their Google Accounts and leave link sharing off. A link is a bearer credential: anyone who obtains a working link may be able to pass it on. “Unlisted” or difficult to guess is not the same as restricted to named accounts.

Revoke a link by turning link sharing off
Google says removing an individual does not end access for other people who hold the link while link sharing remains enabled. To revoke the current link, turn link sharing off; Google says turning it on again creates a new link. Review both the link-sharing and collaboration settings when managing the album. Apple Photos Shared Albums: a natural fit for Apple users
Apple Shared Albums let participants add photos, videos, and comments, and the owner can remove participants. The experience depends on the software generation: Apple’s current documentation distinguishes older albums and systems from newer features, including full-resolution sharing and web participation. Before choosing this option for a group, check that everyone can use the features you expect. Check what “full resolution” and web access mean for your group
Do not assume every participant or existing album gets the newer experience. Confirm participants’ operating-system compatibility and consider storage implications before relying on full-resolution sharing or web-based participation. Instagram Instants: sharing within Instagram, not outside it
Meta announced Instants in May 2026 as a way to share with selected recipients, including close friends or followers who follow back. Meta says shared instants are stored in an archive visible only to the user for up to one year, and that Instagram’s Block, Mute, and Restrict controls apply. These are details from Meta’s product announcement, not independent verification of privacy performance. - Audience: Prefer named-account invitations for a limited group. Use a link only when the convenience is worth the forwarding risk.
- Contributions: Decide whether everyone should add photos or whether one person will post. Check the service’s collaboration controls.
- Devices and access: Consider whether friends use iPhone, Android, or a web browser. Apple Shared Albums’ newer features depend on software generation.
- Quality and storage: Check whether the group needs full-resolution images and what storage behavior applies to the chosen service.
- Revocation: Understand how to remove a participant and, separately, how to disable or replace a link.
- Metadata: Review whether location or other information is included when images are shared.
- Duration: For a few temporary pictures, a private conversation may be more practical than creating a lasting album. Google’s help page states a limit of 20,000 photos per conversation; that figure applies to conversations, not shared albums.
What “private” does—and does not—promise
These services provide access controls; that does not establish that shared albums are end-to-end encrypted, undiscoverable, or impossible to copy. A recipient who can view an image may be able to save or redistribute it. Treat a shared album as disclosure to every participant, and do not rely on deleting the album to erase copies someone already saved elsewhere.

Apple says participant identities are not available to people who have not been invited to and accepted a private share. Apple also says file names and the Apple Account holder’s first and last name are available to anyone with the sharing link, including Apple. A link should not be described as anonymous. For sensitive images, review the device’s sharing options: Apple says users can decide whether to include location, edit history, and depth data. Those metadata choices do not prevent recipients from copying the image.
