Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If PRISM Live Studio is using too much CPU while a video loops to YouTube, first check how the video enters your scene and which encoder PRISM is using. For a local video file, match its resolution to the stream output and test hardware decoding; for software encoding, try PRISM’s veryfast preset. Then simplify the scene and reduce output settings one at a time. Looping alone does not establish the cause, and high CPU does not by itself mean you need new hardware.
Start by identifying the video source
Find out whether the repeated video is a local file added as a PRISM Media Source or a Browser source capturing playback from a webpage. Those are different workloads, so do not assume a local file and browser playback will affect your computer in the same way. PRISM’s guidance addresses media processing, encoder choice, output settings, sources, and other running programs; it does not establish that repeated playback itself causes high CPU.

Check CPU and GPU use in Task Manager while the stream is running. Close resource-intensive applications, then add or enable sources one at a time to see whether a particular source or scene coincides with a rise in usage. PRISM warns that running multiple programs during a broadcast can significantly affect CPU, GPU, and memory use.
Reduce work for a local video source
- Open the local video’s source properties in PRISM and check its resolution.
- Match the media resolution to the stream’s transmission resolution to avoid unnecessary scaling.
- If your GPU has more available capacity than your CPU, enable Use hardware decoding when possible in the source properties.
- Run the stream and compare CPU and GPU use. Hardware decoding can shift work to the GPU, so check that GPU use remains stable and the stream still performs acceptably.
If the video is a Browser source rather than a local file, do not apply local Media Source decoding advice as though the source were identical. Test that source separately, simplify the scene, and compare resource use as you enable or disable it.
#1 Best Overall

Check PRISM’s streaming encoder
In PRISM, open Settings > Output > Advanced and inspect the streaming encoder. Software encoding does work on the CPU; a supported hardware encoder can shift encoding work to a compatible NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, depending on your system.
- Using x264 or x265: test the veryfast CPU usage preset, which PRISM recommends for these software encoders. Slower presets use more CPU.
- A compatible hardware encoder is available: test it and monitor both CPU and GPU. Encoder names vary by graphics-card manufacturer; confirm that the selected option is supported on your machine.
Change one setting at a time and check stream performance after each change. YouTube’s general encoder setup requires its Live server URL and stream key to be entered in the encoder, but that connection step is not a specific remedy for high CPU use.

Lower output workload and simplify the scene
If CPU use remains high, reduce the workload incrementally and keep the best output quality your system can sustain.
Recommended Free Tools
- Reduce output FPS. PRISM suggests trying 30 FPS when a 60 FPS stream is experiencing slow-rendering frame drops.
- Lower output resolution, then bitrate if needed. Check the visual result and stream stability after each adjustment.
- Reduce the number of active sources and simplify scenes. Remove sources you do not need for the loop.
- Close resource-intensive programs and recheck CPU and GPU use before considering a hardware purchase.
Use PRISM’s frame-drop notice to choose the next test
PRISM distinguishes two kinds of frame-drop notice. Slow rendering points toward work needed to process and render the scene, such as source or scene workload. Poor encoding points toward the encoder’s ability to keep up. Use the notice to choose which settings to test: simplify sources and output workload for a rendering problem; check the encoder and its preset for an encoding problem.

The notice is useful evidence about the PRISM workload, but it does not by itself establish that YouTube’s network connection is at fault. If you change a setting, observe the result before making another change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a hardware upgrade might make sense
Do not buy a graphics card solely because PRISM’s CPU use looks high. A card with a supported hardware encoder is a possible option only if the stream is using CPU software encoding and the existing hardware lacks a usable encoder or enough capacity. Confirm compatibility with the computer, including its other components, before choosing a card. Without your system specifications and workload details, no particular model or purchase need can be established.
