To take a full-page screenshot in Chrome without installing anything, use DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command. Add an extension if you need a repeatable capture-and-download workflow or editing and export features. There is no proven universal winner: page behavior, capture target, output format, permissions, and maintenance all matter.
How to take a full-page screenshot in Chrome with DevTools
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Open Chrome DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Command+Option+I on Mac.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on Mac.
- Type Capture full size screenshot and select the matching command. Chrome’s documentation describes this as capturing the page, including content outside the visible viewport.
Chrome also provides an area screenshot command in the Command Menu. Area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. UI labels can change, so if a command is not found, search the Command Menu for “screenshot.”
DevTools is the no-install baseline for a one-off capture. Its documented full-size command captures the page, while the cited documentation does not establish a workflow for editing or exporting to multiple formats.

Use DevTools for a quick, no-install capture
Choose DevTools when you need the full page once and are comfortable opening developer tools. It is also a sensible first option before granting an extension access to websites.
Consider GoFullPage when you want an extension workflow
Its listing describes full-page image and PDF downloads, and its publisher describes handling inner scroll areas and embedded frames. These are claims to weigh against your own page and requirements, not a guarantee that every page will capture correctly.

The cited manual documents a broad set of capture, editing, and export options, but dates to 2016. Because the available evidence does not confirm current features or support, verify the current product listing before installing or depending on a specific function.
Why full-page captures can be incomplete
- Nested scrolling: a page may scroll inside a panel rather than the main document. GoFullPage’s publisher says it supports inner scrollable elements, but the result can depend on the page.
- Frames and embedded content: the GoFullPage publisher describes iframe support and says iframe or frame access may be requested when needed.
- Custom scroll behavior: a site that controls scrolling with custom JavaScript can interfere with successive-scroll capture, according to the GoFullPage FAQ.
- PDF documents: GoFullPage’s FAQ says it cannot access a PDF document to scroll and capture in the described way. Use the browser or PDF viewer’s own export or print options instead.
- Content loaded on scroll: pages may reveal more content only as you scroll. A screenshot method that does not trigger the relevant loading behavior may omit it; inspect the output rather than assuming a long capture contains everything.
Permissions and privacy checks before installing
Chrome explains that website-data access can allow an extension to read, request, or modify page data. Optional permissions may be requested only when a relevant feature is used. Review the actual permission prompt and the extension’s current listing rather than relying on a generic description.

- Review optional permissions when the extension requests them, especially downloads or access to frames.
- Read the publisher’s current privacy statement. GoFullPage says captured data is stored in the browser’s HTML5 filesystem or IndexedDB on the user’s computer, not its servers; this is the publisher’s statement, not an independent audit.

DevTools does not show the full-size command
Open the Command Menu while DevTools is open and search for “screenshot.” Confirm that you are using Chrome DevTools and try the command again; labels can shift between versions.

An area screenshot command does not work
Dock DevTools to the browser window and retry. Chrome’s documentation says area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.
The extension misses part of the page
Check whether the content is inside a nested scroll area, iframe, or PDF viewer, or whether the site uses custom scrolling. Try the native DevTools full-size capture as a comparison, and inspect the extension’s current permission requests if frame access is relevant.
The extension requests more access than expected
Read the prompt and current listing before granting permission. If a permission is optional, grant it only if you need the associated feature; otherwise use DevTools for a no-extension capture.
