Prepare Your Mac for macOS 27: Check Compatibility, Free Space, and Backups

Confirm your Mac’s compatibility, check available storage without relying on an unsupported free-space rule, make a separate Time Machine backup, and install macOS 27 through Software Update.

Before installing macOS 27, confirm that Apple lists your exact Mac model as compatible, check internal storage, and make a separate Time Machine backup. Apple’s reviewed macOS 27 pages do not specify a minimum amount of free space, so use Software Update’s own warning—not a generic online threshold—to judge whether you need to clear more room.

Is my Mac compatible with macOS 27?

Check Apple’s macOS 27 compatibility list and match your Mac’s family and model. Eligibility varies by model; do not assume that every Mac in a product family can upgrade. Apple’s macOS 27 upgrade instructions also say Software Update offers only software compatible with your Mac. If your model is not listed, do not try to force the upgrade; Apple notes that an earlier macOS version may be available for an incompatible Mac.

For the model check, rely on Apple’s current list rather than an older compatibility chart. The list identifies eligible MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook Neo, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro configurations.

How much space do I need to install macOS 27?

Apple’s reviewed macOS 27 upgrade and storage pages do not state a minimum free-space requirement. Avoid treating a number from a generic guide as an Apple requirement. Check your available space and proceed through Software Update; if it reports insufficient space, use the storage view to find what you can safely remove or move.

Check internal storage

On a Mac running macOS 27, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage > All Volumes. The colored categories show how storage is used. Move the pointer over a category color to see its size; light gray indicates free space. Apple’s storage guide describes this view.

Clean up only what you recognize

Use the category breakdown to guide a careful cleanup rather than deleting files at random. Review downloads and large personal files you recognize, move wanted files to an appropriate storage location, and remove only items you have verified you no longer need. Apple’s storage guidance also points to built-in storage optimization and iCloud storage options. Do not delete system or Library files to make room.

How do I back up my Mac before upgrading?

Make a backup on a destination separate from your Mac’s internal disk. Apple recommends backing up before a macOS upgrade. Time Machine can use compatible external storage connected through a port such as USB-C or Thunderbolt; Apple also documents supported network destinations. Apple recommends a backup disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity—for example, its guidance says a 1 TB Mac should ideally use a 2 TB backup disk. Reserve the Time Machine disk for backups rather than ordinary files. See Apple’s Time Machine backup instructions for destination guidance.

Set up an external Time Machine disk

  1. Connect a compatible external storage device to your Mac.
  2. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > General > Time Machine, then select Add Backup Disk.
  3. Choose the disk and select Set Up Disk. If macOS asks to erase it, first make sure it contains no files you still need.
  4. If you enable encryption, save the backup password somewhere safe; Apple says you need it to restore files.
  5. Choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu. Check the menu’s progress or the date and time of the latest backup before starting the upgrade.
  6. Eject the disk before disconnecting it.

The first backup may take longer; later backups copy files changed since the previous backup. Time Machine can back up items such as apps, music, photos, email, and documents, but Apple’s Mac User Guide says it does not back up system files or apps installed during macOS installation. Local APFS snapshots are stored on the Mac’s own disk, so they are not a substitute for a separate backup.

If you use a network backup

Apple documents using another Mac on the network or a third-party NAS that supports Time Machine over SMB. AFP-based network backup is not supported in macOS 27 or later, including with older Mac network destinations and older AirPort or Time Capsule setups. If your current destination uses one of those older setups, check its protocol and move to a supported destination before upgrading. Apple’s Time Machine backup-disk guidance covers supported destinations.

How do I install macOS 27 safely?

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update, or search for Software Update in Spotlight.
  2. Review the update or upgrade offered for your Mac, then follow the on-screen instructions. Have your administrator login password ready.
  3. Keep the Mac awake while installation completes. If you are using a Mac laptop, do not close its lid during installation.
  4. Allow time for restarts, progress bars, and temporary blank screens; these can occur during installation.

Apple’s macOS update instructions explain how Software Update checks for compatible software and presents available updates.
