Prepare App Store Creative Assets Early: Headers, Search Placements, and Testing

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Build your App Store creative set before launch, not during submission week. Put app previews, screenshots, a product-page header, and a search-results creative in App Store Connect’s Asset Library; preview them on every supported device, orientation, and language; then submit the assets for review independently of the app version. Once an approved version is live, you can publish approved header or search creative without submitting a new app update.

What counts as an App Store creative asset?

Apple separates the familiar app previews and screenshots from optional creative assets that communicate a broader brand, seasonal offer, or new content. The same Asset Library in App Store Connect stores these files and lets you reuse approved material in eligible placements.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • App previews: short videos that demonstrate the interface, content, or gameplay.
  • Screenshots: still images showing the product experience on supported devices.
  • Product-page header: a prominent image or video area at the top of an App Store product page.
  • Search-results creative: a visual shown when someone discovers the app through the App Store Search tab.
  • In-app-event creative: assets associated with eligible events that can also occupy App Store discovery surfaces.

These are not interchangeable canvases. A header can establish a campaign or brand message, while search creative must explain the app quickly to someone who has just entered a query. Treat each placement as a separate communication problem even when the underlying artwork is related.

Why upload assets before the app launches?

Asset Library accepts images and videos independently of an app version. That lets your team upload files, use Apple’s preview tools, and begin review before the binary is ready. Approval work can therefore run in parallel with engineering, localization, and release preparation.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Early approval also protects the launch date. If a file fails a specification or review requirement, you have time to replace it without holding the app submission. After a live version is approved, an approved header or search-result asset can be selected and published for that version without sending a new version through review. This is useful for seasonal campaigns, refreshed positioning, or a new feature that needs a different first impression.

Current production specifications

Design from Apple’s current templates and safe-area overlays, then verify the values in App Store Connect before export because specifications can change. The documented formats are:

Placement Aspect ratio Documented pixel guidance Important constraints
Product-page header, primary image format 21:9 3840 × 1646 pixels Keep essential text and faces inside Apple’s safe area; check portrait and landscape presentations.
Search-results image 3:2 Minimum 1920 × 1280; maximum 3840 × 2560 Design for a legible first glance and the safe area shown in Apple’s templates.
PNG variants listed in Apple’s specification table 16:9 Use the dimensions in the current table for the target device or placement. Do not assume a 16:9 file can replace a 21:9 header or 3:2 search image.

Images must not contain an alpha channel or transparency. Export a fully opaque background, including behind logos, device frames, and text. Videos play muted by default in search results; on a product page, viewers can unmute them. Your opening frame or poster frame must therefore communicate the idea without narration, dialogue, or sound effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the asset set step by step

  1. Define the discovery intent. Write the query, campaign promise, or audience need that each placement must answer. For example, a search image might explain the app’s core job, while a seasonal header might announce a time-limited experience.
  2. Choose the first visual. Decide whether the first frame should show the interface, a piece of content, gameplay, or a benefit-led message. Put the most important proof in the safe area rather than relying on a later frame.
  3. Produce placement-specific files. Create the 21:9 header at Apple’s primary-image size and a separate 3:2 search image within the stated pixel range. Create the required video, screenshot, and PNG variants from the current specification table instead of stretching one file into every slot.
  4. Check legibility at discovery size. Reduce the artwork until it resembles a phone or tablet search result. Remove fine print, dense feature lists, and decorative elements that disappear at that scale. A reader should understand the app’s purpose before reading a caption.
  5. Cover devices and orientations. Open the templates for every supported iPhone and iPad presentation. Reposition headlines, interface crops, and faces when a portrait crop would cut off the evidence used in landscape.
  6. Prepare localizations. Allow for text expansion in translated headlines and promotional copy. Check that a localized line does not cross the safe-area boundary or cover a key control in a screenshot.
  7. Upload to Asset Library. Add the files independently of the app version, assign them to the intended placement, and resolve any validation messages before submission.
  8. Use Preview. Inspect product-page and search-result simulations across devices, orientations, and languages. Look for clipped text, unexpected cropping, unreadable controls, and a poster frame that makes sense with audio off.
  9. Submit for review. Submit the complete set early enough to handle rejection or replacement. Keep approved alternates in the library so a campaign does not depend on one file.

Designing a product-page header

The header is the broadest canvas and the first branded statement on the product page. Use it to frame the app’s current promise, not to repeat a long feature list that belongs in screenshots or promotional text.

Keep the message inside the safe area

Apple’s templates show where text and important subjects remain visible after responsive cropping. Place the headline, logo, product name, and primary character or interface element inside that region. Let background color and texture extend beyond it so a crop still looks intentional.

Show the experience, not a generic advertisement

Apple’s guidance is to “State the obvious” and “Showcase the firsthand experience.” Apply that literally: show the screen, content, or gameplay a prospective user will receive. A decorative illustration can support the message, but it should not replace evidence of what the app does.

Plan for silent motion

If the header is a video, make the poster or first frame self-explanatory. Put the product action on screen before any spoken explanation, and use captions only when they remain readable in the available crop. Search viewers may never turn sound on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Winning the Search tab’s first impression

Apple describes search-result creative as the first thing people experience when they find an app through the Search tab. Match the visual to the query they just entered. A user searching for a specific task should see that task performed in the app, not an abstract brand statement.

  • State the app’s purpose in plain language.
  • Show the relevant interface, content category, or gameplay loop.
  • Use one dominant message instead of several competing claims.
  • Make the first frame understandable with the video muted.
  • Check the crop on both supported orientations and localized text lengths.

If you provide no search-result creative, Apple may instead show In-App Events, app previews, and screenshots. That fallback means your ordinary product-page gallery can become the discovery experience, so its opening images deserve the same attention as a dedicated search asset.

Apple allows up to 10 screenshots on a product page. When no app preview is available, the first one to three screenshots may appear in search results. Build those opening screenshots as a sequence: identify the product, prove the main benefit, then show the next action. Do not hide the explanation in screenshot six.

When to create Custom Product Pages

Custom Product Pages let you create up to 70 additional product-page versions. Each page can have different screenshots, app previews, promotional text, and keywords, and each receives a unique URL. They are useful when one default page cannot honestly serve several acquisition messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match one page to one audience or campaign

Create a page when the promise changes materially—for example, a particular feature, sport, character, seasonal event, audience segment, or campaign offer. Keep the opening screenshot and promotional text aligned with that promise so the visitor sees continuity from the ad or message to the store page.

Use distinct keyword sets

Assign a keyword combination that reflects the page’s audience or campaign. This can make the custom page visible for relevant App Store searches instead of sending every query to the default page. Do not reuse one generic keyword set for every page; distinct combinations make the destination intentional and easier to interpret in analytics.

Distribute the unique URL

Custom Product Page links can be used in Apple Ads, social posts, email campaigns, and other acquisition links. Tag your campaign records outside App Store Connect so the destination, audience, creative promise, and launch date remain auditable.

Apple reports a “2.5 percentage point increase on average” when people are referred to a custom product page, compared with “the 1.6% average conversion rate on default product pages.” The source does not state the year, so treat these as Apple-reported, year-not-stated figures rather than a guaranteed result for your app.

Testing the default product page

Product Page Optimization supports tests of up to three treatments on iOS and iPadOS product pages. A treatment can use an alternate app icon, screenshot set, app previews, or a combination of those assets.

Write one hypothesis per treatment

For example, compare a feature-led opening screenshot with a benefit-led opening screenshot. Keep the rest of the experience as consistent as practical so a result has an interpretable cause. Do not change the icon, screenshots, headline, and audience promise at once unless the purpose is to evaluate the complete package.

Read the outcome in App Analytics

Evaluate engagement and conversion alongside downloads. A treatment that attracts more page views but fewer qualified downloads may be a weaker business result than one with a smaller audience and better post-install behavior.

Product Page Optimization does not include Custom Product Pages or Apple Watch and iMessage product pages. Test the default page separately, and use custom-page analytics to evaluate campaign-specific destinations.

What to measure after publication

Custom Product Page analytics include impressions, product-page views, downloads, conversion rate, and downstream subscription or sales metrics. Data for a particular page appears once that page has received at least five first-time downloads, so a newly launched page may show no page-level result until it crosses that threshold.

  • Downloads: the acquisition outcome, interpreted with the page’s audience and campaign size.
  • Conversion rate: the share of visitors who download, compared with a relevant baseline.
  • Subscription or sales metrics: whether the promise attracts users who create downstream value, not just installs.

Keep the measurement window, localization, device mix, and traffic source in your reporting notes. A result from a small campaign or one language should not be presented as a universal App Store conversion rate.

Preflight checklist before launch

  • Every required app preview and screenshot is assigned to the correct device family.
  • The product-page header is 21:9 and the primary image is 3840 × 1646 pixels where that format is required.
  • The search image is 3:2 and falls between 1920 × 1280 and 3840 × 2560 pixels.
  • PNG variants follow the current Apple specification table rather than an assumed export size.
  • No image contains transparency or an alpha channel.
  • Text and important subjects stay inside the safe area.
  • Poster frames and first video frames work without audio.
  • The first one to three screenshots still explain the app if no preview is available.
  • Each Custom Product Page has a distinct message, keyword set, screenshots, and URL.
  • Preview checks cover every supported device, orientation, and localization.
  • Assets are submitted early enough to replace a rejected file.
  • Approved alternates are retained for seasonal or campaign updates.

Common problems and fixes

The header looks cropped or loses its headline

Return to Apple’s safe-area template and move all essential content inward. Extend only background elements beyond the safe area, then inspect both portrait and landscape previews again.

The search video is confusing when muted

Rewrite the opening seconds so the interface action or benefit is visible immediately. Use a clear poster frame and captions only as support, not as the sole explanation.

Localized text no longer fits

Shorten the source headline, reserve additional space for expansion, and review every language in Preview. Do not solve the problem by shrinking type until it becomes unreadable.

A campaign reaches the default page

Check that the campaign link uses the intended Custom Product Page URL and that the page’s keyword set matches the acquisition route. Confirm the page is approved and available for the storefront and device being targeted.

Analytics are blank for a custom page

Verify that the page has received at least five first-time downloads. Until that threshold is met, page-level data may not appear even if impressions or visits occurred.

Choosing the right creative route

Goal Best route What the first visual must prove
Explain the app to broad store traffic Default product-page screenshots and previews The core job, interface, or gameplay loop.
Brand a launch, season, or major content moment Product-page header Why the current moment is relevant and what users will experience.
Match a search query Search-results creative That the app directly satisfies the query.
Tailor a paid, social, or email campaign Custom Product Page Continuity between the campaign promise and the landing page.
Compare alternative messages on the default page Product Page Optimization The single hypothesis being tested, with measurable conversion impact.

The strongest launch plan uses these routes together: approved baseline assets for the default page, a placement-specific header and search creative, custom pages for materially different campaigns, and controlled optimization tests for the default experience. Preparing them in Asset Library before release turns creative review into a scheduled launch task rather than a last-minute dependency.
