Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrepaid often costs less if you already have a compatible phone and want a predictable bill. Postpaid may be better value if you need phone financing, multiple lines, priority data, or plan benefits you would otherwise pay for. The right comparison is the total cost for your address, line count, and usage—not just the advertised monthly price.
Prepaid and postpaid: what is the difference?
Prepaid service is paid for before the upcoming service period. If you do not renew, service may stop until you pay. Postpaid service is used during a billing cycle and paid for afterward; because the carrier extends service before payment, it may assess credit. Policies and exceptions vary by carrier. Consumer Voice’s guide explains these billing arrangements and common differences.

These are billing methods, not measures of network quality. Prepaid and postpaid plans can use the same underlying carrier network, including when a prepaid provider is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). That does not guarantee the same data priority, speed, support, or roaming terms.
Which usually costs less?
Prepaid is often the lower-cost choice, particularly for one line and a phone you already own. But comparisons can be misleading when the plans differ in data limits, network priority, hotspot, taxes, phone financing, discounts, or included extras. The FCC notes that multipart pricing and differences in limits and features make direct comparisons difficult.

CTIA’s 2026 Wireless Affordability Tracker Update reports two 2025 benchmarks: an average of $55 per month for a single-line unlimited plan from major nationwide operators, and $9 per month for an affordable prepaid plan. The $9 figure describes lower-cost connectivity, not unlimited service comparable to the $55 benchmark. CTIA reports real-price declines of 10.7% year over year and 34.9% over five years for the postpaid benchmark, and 2.6% and 51.7%, respectively, for affordable prepaid options. These are CTIA category benchmarks, not matched offers; CTIA is a wireless industry association. Read CTIA’s tracker.
How to compare the real cost
- Match lines and data. Compare the same number of lines and a similar monthly data need.
- Use the recurring price you qualify for. Check whether AutoPay, multi-line, or other discounts apply and what the price is without them.
- Add taxes and fees. Include recurring carrier charges and one-time activation or connection fees.
- Include the phone. Compare the cost of your current device or an unlocked replacement with installments and any promotional credits, including the conditions attached to those credits.
- Check service limits and extras. Compare high-speed data allowances, congestion rules, hotspot, roaming, international use, video limits, and support.
- Value only benefits you would use. A bundled perk is not a saving if you would not otherwise pay for it.
A dated carrier example: T-Mobile Prepaid
T-Mobile’s plan page lists Starter Monthly at $40 per month with AutoPay for 15 GB of 5G data, Unlimited Monthly at $45 with AutoPay, and Unlimited Plus Monthly at $60 with AutoPay. The page says the first month costs $5 more, taxes and fees are extra, and heavy users may see lower speeds during congestion. It describes Unlimited Monthly hotspot data as unlimited at 3G speeds; Unlimited Plus includes 5 GB of high-speed hotspot data. These are carrier-listed terms, not a market-wide price ranking. Check T-Mobile’s prepaid plans and disclosures.

T-Mobile’s FCC Broadband Facts disclosure separately lists Unlimited Monthly at $50 for one line or $80 for two, before discounts; it also lists a $10 one-time device connection charge, a $0 early termination fee, and government taxes that vary by location. The page advertises a $45 AutoPay price after a $50 first month. Because the listed prices reflect different discount conditions, use the price that applies to your account and confirm current terms directly with the carrier.

Why data may perform differently
“Unlimited” does not necessarily mean identical speeds at all times. The FCC says basic postpaid unlimited plans generally include talk, text, and data that may be deprioritized during congestion. Higher tiers may offer more data before deprioritization, hotspot, storage, or streaming features. The FCC also reports that postpaid users are frequently prioritized over prepaid users on a given network during peak congestion, while either type may face deprioritization after a plan’s threshold. The exact rules depend on the plan, so check its network-management terms rather than assuming every postpaid plan is faster or every prepaid plan is slower. Who may be better suited to prepaid?
- You have an unlocked, compatible phone and do not need a carrier-financed handset.
- You want to set a clear service budget or avoid a traditional credit check.
- Your data use is modest, or you have found a prepaid plan whose data and network rules suit your needs.
- You value the ability to change plans without carrying a device-financing balance.
An annual prepaid plan may reduce the effective monthly cost, but it requires more money up front and can make a mid-term switch costly or wasteful. Weigh the upfront payment against the expected savings and how long you expect to keep the service.
Who may get more value from postpaid?
- You want to finance a new phone or qualify for a device promotion with terms that make sense for you.
- You need several lines and the carrier’s multi-line discounts narrow the per-line price gap.
- You use included international features, hotspot, storage, or other benefits that you would otherwise buy separately.
- You need the specific priority, support, or roaming terms of a particular postpaid plan.
Plan details matter more than the label: prepaid providers can offer benefits, and postpaid does not guarantee a particular feature or performance level. Compare the actual terms. Can you switch without buying a new phone?
Often, yes. First check that your existing phone is unlocked and compatible with the network and plan you want. T-Mobile specifically advises customers to check compatibility before bringing a device to its network. Buy a replacement only if your current phone is unsuitable or incompatible; then compare an unlocked phone’s cost with carrier financing and any promotion requirements. T-Mobile’s plan information.

Do prepaid phone plans require a credit check?
Prepaid service generally does not involve the same extension of service before payment as postpaid, so it may avoid a traditional credit check. Carrier policies can vary; check the provider’s current signup terms.
Is prepaid data slower than postpaid data?
Not automatically. Network priority and congestion rules vary by plan. Check the plan’s network-management terms, including any threshold after which data may be deprioritized.
Does postpaid include phone financing or family discounts?
Some postpaid offers provide device financing or multi-line discounts, but terms and eligibility vary. Include installment costs and promotion conditions when comparing the total.
