AI can help modders understand unfamiliar code, draft and debug small utilities, enhance textures in supported workflows, and experiment with more reactive NPC dialogue. It is not a one-click mod maker: generated code can be wrong, assets and dialogue need human judgment, and the creator remains responsible for testing, compatibility, and rights.
What AI can help modders do
AI’s role in modding is best understood as several task-specific aids, not an autonomous system that reliably builds, tests, and publishes a finished mod. The strongest examples cover code assistance, graphics workflows, and experimental dialogue.

Explain code and help with small utilities
The V Rising modding guide describes using AI to explain unfamiliar APIs, suggest boilerplate, assist with debugging, and help newer developers learn. This can make a knowledgeable modder faster and help a beginner ask more useful questions. A practical approach is to ask for an explanation or algorithm, request a small utility, then inspect and adapt the result rather than treating it as finished code.
Enhance textures in a supported graphics workflow
NVIDIA RTX Remix is a specific example: NVIDIA describes capturing game assets, enhancing materials with generative AI, creating physically based material maps, and upscaling low-resolution textures. It also describes connecting Remix to ComfyUI through a REST API. These capabilities belong to the RTX Remix workflow and RTX AI PC hardware; they are not a general requirement for making mods, nor do they mean every game or PC is compatible. Check current hardware and game support before choosing this route.

NVIDIA said in 2025 that more than 5 billion PC game mods are downloaded annually, more than 30,000 modders had experimented with RTX Remix since its beta, and ray-traced mods of hundreds of classic titles had reached more than 1 million gamers. These are NVIDIA’s company-published figures, not independently audited counts. They describe the scale of modding and use of its platform, not the number of AI-authored mods or the prevalence of AI among modders.
Prototype more reactive NPC dialogue
Ubisoft’s NEO NPC project illustrates what designers are exploring, not a feature established as shipped in a commercial game. In its March 2024 account, Ubisoft said writers created character histories and voices while a model improvised within guardrails. The team iterated when dialogue drifted from the intended character, and the project was described as still needing work before implementation in a game. Ubisoft Narrative Director Virginie Mosser put a boundary plainly: “It’s important to us to reiterate that these characters do not have free will.”
For existing Unreal Engine games, Convai’s Modding Framework documentation describes integrating AI-driven NPC features using the Convai C++ SDK and UE4SS. That guide lists a historical Unreal Engine range of 4.12 through 5.2; it does not establish compatibility with later engine versions, so check the current documentation before relying on it.

A different, research-oriented example is StarCharM, a tool explored for iteratively creating Stardew Valley NPC mods with limited initial input and user adjustment. Its paper reports a study with 10 Stardew Valley players. Participants saw potential for generative tools to widen participation, alongside concerns about originality and community engagement. This small, game-specific study does not show that AI has already democratized modding at scale.
What AI cannot reliably do
Guarantee correct or safe code
A model may invent APIs or prefab identifiers, leave placeholders, or generate code that crashes, leaks resources, or runs inefficiently. It may also miss version-specific behavior. The V Rising guide recommends understanding generated code and testing it thoroughly; its warning is succinct: “If you ship the code, you own the consequences.” Test in the target game and environment, not just by asking the model whether its output looks correct.
Replace narrative design and judgment
Generated dialogue can go off-character or produce unsuitable output. Ubisoft’s prototype depended on writer-defined histories, voices, boundaries, and repeated adjustment. Ubisoft Data Scientist Mélanie Lopez Malet summarized the importance of player input with “It’s garbage in, garbage out,” while Senior Vice President of Production Technology Guillemette Picard said, “Generative AI is only of value if it has value for them.” These are statements about the design goals of that prototype, not technical guarantees for other games.

Settle licensing or publication questions
Using AI does not automatically remove licensing obligations. The V Rising guide cautions that generated code may still be subject to applicable licenses when it is materially similar to licensed code. Avoid pasting large blocks of licensed code into prompts or asking a model to recreate a specific mod unless you understand the rights and attribution involved. A mod that compiles is not necessarily ready to publish; review it, test it, and confirm that its assets and code can be distributed.

Industry-wide survey figures offer context, but they are not a census of modders. The Associated Press reported on September 25, 2024, that a Game Developers Conference report released in January found nearly half of surveyed developers said generative AI tools were used in their workplace, 31% said they personally used them, and roughly four in five said they worried about ethical use. These are GDC survey figures as reported by AP; the cited passage does not state the sample size. They concern game developers generally, not people making mods.

Choosing a workflow for a modding project
Start with the job you need done, then check compatibility and the amount of review you can provide. A tool’s strength in one area does not make it suitable for another.

Before committing to a tool, confirm the game and engine versions it supports, whether it runs locally or depends on a service, any hardware needs, how much human control it offers, and the rights and distribution responsibilities it leaves with you. The available examples do not support a reliable ranking by price or performance.
