There is no established age at which a baby can safely use a pool float. Inflatable floats and seats are not drowning-prevention devices, and an age printed on a product does not make it safe. For an infant or toddler in a pool, an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach, actively supervising.
Why there is no general safe age for baby pool floats
The reviewed American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidance does not set a minimum age when inflatable pool floats become safe. A particular product’s age range is not a safety guarantee and should not be treated as medical or drowning-prevention advice.

Inflatable aids and toys can fail to keep a child’s airway above water. A float can tip, deflate, or move away from an adult. Floating seats may tip and trap a baby underwater. A baby using a neck float may slip through its opening if it is improperly inflated, develops an air leak, or becomes slippery, as pediatrician Rohit Shenoi, MD, FAAP, explains in the AAP’s neck-float guidance.
Neck floats have documented hazards
The AAP reports that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received 115 reports involving neck floats from January 2019 through January 2024, including two infant deaths and two injuries requiring hospitalization. This is a count of reports, not a rate of harm among users, and it does not establish risk for every kind of pool float.

The AAP also reports that the FDA warned parents not to use baby neck floats in 2022 and that the CPSC warned against buying or using the Otteroo neck float. Check current agency notices for the status of any specific product.
What to use instead—and what it can and cannot do

For a life jacket, choose one that is U.S. Coast Guard-approved, fits the child properly, and is appropriate for the setting. Inflatable toys and swim aids are not substitutes for an approved life jacket.

How to supervise a baby in or near a pool
- Stay in the water and within arm’s reach of an infant or toddler, providing touch supervision.
- Keep active attention on the child; do not rely on a float, another child, or a momentary check-in to keep the baby safe.
- Never leave a baby alone in or near water, even briefly, or leave the baby in the care of another young child.
Pool floats and swim lessons are different questions
Babies under 1 year
The AAP does not recommend infant swim programs for babies under 1 year as a way to reduce drowning risk because evidence that they reduce that risk is lacking. A parent-child water-play class may help a baby become familiar with the pool, but it is not a substitute for an adult staying close and actively supervising.
Lessons for older babies and children
Many children can begin lessons after their first birthday when they are ready. Readiness depends on physical and developmental abilities, emotional maturity, interest, and prior exposure to water. A pediatrician can help a family assess whether a child is ready. This lesson guidance does not establish an age when a pool float is safe.
