Preamp Outputs Explained: What to Connect and How to Set Them Up

A preamp output sends line-level audio to a separate amplifier or compatible powered subwoofer. Check the manual for volume behavior, filtering, and connector compatibility before wiring.

A preamp output sends a line-level audio signal from a preamplifier, integrated amplifier, or AV receiver to another device—usually an external power amplifier or a powered subwoofer with a compatible line-level input. It is not a speaker output. Before connecting anything, check the manuals: a jack labeled PRE OUT, SUB OUT, or LINE OUT may differ in volume control, filtering, and intended use.

What a preamp output does

A preamp output carries audio onward for another component to amplify or use. For example, it can feed a separate power amplifier, which then drives passive speakers, or connect to a powered subwoofer’s line-level input. Cambridge Audio describes its Pre Out as intended for a power amplifier or active subwoofer in its Pre Out connections FAQ.

Because the signal is line-level, do not connect a pre-out to passive speakers. Use a compatible amplifier input or a powered subwoofer input instead. Yamaha likewise documents receiver PRE OUT connections to an external power amplifier in its RX-V6A manual.

Pre Out, Sub Out, Line Out, and fixed output are not interchangeable labels

Connector names alone do not tell you whether an output follows the volume control, applies bass filtering, or is meant for recording. Check the component’s manual for the exact jack and its behavior.

General pre-out versus dedicated subwoofer output

A general pre-out may send the full frequency range, while a dedicated subwoofer output may apply filtering or bass management. In the Cambridge Audio CXA61, CXA81, and CXA81 Mk II manual, Pre Out sends a full-range signal with no low-pass filter; the separate Sub Out has a low-pass filter of approximately 2.3 kHz, with crossover adjustment made at the subwoofer. That specification applies to those models, not to pre-outs generally. See the Cambridge Audio FAQ and linked product manual.

Variable versus fixed level

A variable output changes level with the component’s volume control; a fixed output does not. The label is not enough to establish which behavior applies. For instance, iFi documents one product where RCA is fixed at full volume while its 3.5 mm output is variable like a preamplifier output. Verify the behavior of your exact unit in its manufacturer FAQ before connecting it to equipment that expects volume control.

  • Connects to turntables: connect any Turntable to modern sound equipment without specialized phono input for amplifying music. For the receiver, This can be connected to speakers, computers, laptops and more
  • Simple plug & play: This mini preamp has stereo RCA inputs and stereo RCA outputs. Connect the Turntable to the RCA inputs and ground. Then, connect the amplifier Receiver to the RCA outputs

Recording or tape outputs

A recording or tape output may be fixed-level and may not track the main volume control. Do not treat it as a pre-out unless the manual confirms that it provides the signal and level behavior your destination requires.

Choose the destination before choosing the cable

  • External power amplifier: Use a compatible amplifier input when you want the separate amp to drive passive speakers. Match the preamp’s output format to the amplifier’s input.
  • Powered subwoofer: Use a compatible line-level input. If your receiver or amplifier has a dedicated SUB OUT, check its filtering and setup options before deciding whether to use it instead of a general pre-out.

Klipsch recommends using a dedicated subwoofer or woofer line output for a standard powered subwoofer when one is available. Its subwoofer hookup guidance also discusses high-level connections and cautions against combining LFE and speaker-wire inputs without confirming that the subwoofer supports it.

  • Flexible Sound Customization: Includes bass/treble control with bypass function, and L/R balance knobs for personalized adjustment. Volume memory remembers settings for each input source—giving you a smarter, more convenient audio experience tailored to your taste

Match RCA or XLR to the equipment

RCA is an unbalanced connection; XLR is typically used for balanced connections. Use the format supported by both the output and the destination input. Yamaha advises choosing between RCA and XLR according to the power amplifier’s available inputs and checking XLR pin compatibility in its RX-V6A manual. Do not assume that two XLR sockets are wired identically just because the connectors fit.

For compatible unbalanced RCA connections, a stereo RCA audio interconnect is a suitable cable type; confirm the number of channels and the length you need. A Harman/JBL subwoofer manual illustrates a stereo RCA patch lead between a preamplifier output and line-level subwoofer inputs. That example does not establish compatibility for every subwoofer.

Connect a pre-out safely

  1. Identify the exact output. Read the rear-panel label and the owner’s manual. Confirm whether it is a variable pre-out, dedicated subwoofer output, or another kind of line output.
  2. Confirm the destination input. Use a power amplifier input for passive speakers, or a powered subwoofer’s compatible line-level input. Check whether the subwoofer expects LFE, stereo line-level, or another input mode.
  3. Match the connection format. Use RCA-to-RCA or compatible XLR-to-XLR, following the manuals’ wiring and pin-compatibility guidance. Do not force a connector or assume an adapter resolves an electrical mismatch.
  4. Power down before wiring. Yamaha instructs users to unplug the receiver and turn off the power amplifier or subwoofer before connecting; follow the safety procedure in your own manuals.
  5. Configure levels and filtering. After connecting, set the source volume, subwoofer level, and crossover according to the component manuals. If using a general pre-out, establish whether the output is full-range and where crossover control is intended to occur.

Yamaha’s RX-V6A manual describes receiver PRE OUT use with an external amplifier, and its CX-A5200 manual covers powered-subwoofer connections over compatible XLR or RCA, including setup guidance when connecting two subwoofers.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Connecting passive speakers directly to PRE OUT: A pre-out is a line-level feed, not a speaker-driving output. Connect passive speakers to a power amplifier’s speaker terminals.
  • Assuming SUB OUT and PRE OUT process audio the same way: Their filtering and crossover behavior vary by product. Check the manual for your model.
  • Assuming every output follows the volume knob: Fixed outputs can remain at full level. Confirm whether the output is fixed or variable before use.
  • Combining multiple subwoofer inputs without checking: Some subwoofer electronics may be damaged by combining LFE and speaker-wire inputs. Follow the subwoofer manufacturer’s instructions before using more than one input method.
  • Choosing a cable by connector shape alone: Verify RCA/XLR compatibility, channel count, and any XLR pin-assignment requirements.
