There is no verified common rating or head-to-head test behind these five picks. They are better treated as options with distinct published feature profiles: Google TV Streamer (4K) for Google’s current device and smart-home features, NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro for gaming and USB expansion, Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) for a compact 4K setup, Homatics Box R 4K Plus for Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit Ethernet, and Chromecast with Google TV as a legacy comparison. The specifications below are manufacturer claims, not independent performance results.
What “Android TV” means on these boxes
Product names and interface labels differ. Google calls its current box Google TV Streamer, while stating that it runs Android TV OS. Xiaomi calls its interface Google TV, and NVIDIA describes SHIELD as powered by Android TV. Google TV is the named experience or interface; check each product’s platform wording and confirm that the streaming services you use are supported in your country before buying.

Chromecast with Google TV: treat it as a legacy comparison
Google’s current comparison page still lists Chromecast with Google TV alongside Google TV Streamer and shows lower published memory and storage capacity, with differences in Ethernet and smart-home functions. The page does not confirm current stock at retailers. Verify the exact generation and local availability rather than assuming a listing is current. Google’s comparison page
Quick Recap
How to choose the right box for your setup
- Check the platform and services. Confirm the model’s stated operating system or interface and verify that the services you actually use work in your country.
- Match picture formats to your equipment. Compare output resolution and HDR formats with the television and content sources; a box cannot make a non-compatible TV display 4K or Dolby Vision.
- Size memory and storage to your use. More capacity can be useful if you install many apps, play games or keep local media on the device. Published storage is not necessarily all available to you.
- Choose network and ports around your home. Consider Wi-Fi generation, Ethernet, USB ports and whether you need attached or network storage.
- Check audio support end to end. A device’s format or passthrough listing does not by itself establish that your app, content and sound system will use it.
- Confirm setup requirements and package contents. Check whether an HDMI cable is included and whether gaming features need separate input devices.
- Verify local model, price and stock. Names, packages, availability and prices can vary by region; make sure a seller’s listing matches the intended generation.
