AI model credits are not a universal currency: an API token charge, a prepaid balance, credits inside an app, a subscription allowance, and a cloud billing cap are different things. To estimate what you will pay, identify the exact model and billing route, calculate input and output usage separately, then check how caching, processing mode, regional pricing, included allowances, and account limits change the total.
What does “AI model credits” mean?
“Credits” can refer to several distinct billing mechanisms. A provider may charge an API account for tokens, let you prepay a balance, include usage in a subscription, deduct product-specific credits after an allowance, or control spending through a cloud billing account. These units and rules do not transfer automatically between services.

- API token billing: Charges are calculated from token usage, usually with separate rates for input and output. Cached input or a particular processing mode may have a different rate.
- Prepaid API balance: You add funds to an account and eligible usage draws down the balance under that provider’s rules.
- App or workspace credits: Credits may pay for eligible features within a specific product or plan; they are not necessarily usable for API calls.
- Subscription allowance: A plan may include some usage, with separate rules for extra usage or eligible features.
- Cloud billing controls: A cloud account may set billing tiers, caps, or rate limits without making its credits equivalent to an app’s credits.
Always compare the billing route as well as the model. The same model family can have different prices or terms when accessed directly, through a product subscription, or on a cloud platform.
How much do AI models cost per token?
There is no single cost per token across AI models. API rate cards commonly distinguish input tokens from output tokens, and may list a separate cached-input rate. The model and version matter, as can the service mode and region. Check the live rate card for your exact route and model before estimating a bill.

OpenAI API rates and regional processing
OpenAI’s API pricing page lists rates by model for input, cached input, and output, alongside service-specific charges and conditions. It also says eligible regional-processing endpoints have a 10% uplift for models released on or after March 5, 2026. That uplift applies only where the stated eligibility conditions are met; it is not a general increase for every API call.
A dated Anthropic rate example
Anthropic’s document titled Anthropic List Prices — 2026-05-27 gives a useful example of why one headline rate can mislead, but it is a dated price snapshot rather than a guarantee of today’s direct API rates. For Claude Opus 4.8 on Google Vertex AI, it lists standard global pricing of $5.00 per 1 million input tokens and $25.00 per 1 million output tokens; its batch figures for that example are $2.50 and $12.50, respectively. The table also includes regional and cache rates. Confirm current prices for the specific provider and platform before budgeting. See Anthropic’s dated list-price document.

How should you estimate the cost of an AI workload?
Start with the workload, not the provider’s lowest advertised rate. Estimate how many input and output tokens the task uses, then apply the matching rates and billing conditions. A chat, coding, or automation task can have very different costs depending on prompt size, response length, caching, and processing mode.
- Choose the exact model and version. Similar names do not guarantee identical rates.
- Identify the billing route. Record whether usage goes through an API, app subscription, workspace credits, or a cloud marketplace.
- Estimate input and output separately. Use expected prompt and response sizes; do not treat all tokens as having one price.
- Check cached-input treatment. Apply a cached rate only to usage that meets the provider’s caching conditions.
- Account for service mode and geography. Batch, priority, fast, and regional options can carry different rates or eligibility conditions.
- Apply allowances and controls. Check included usage, prepaid funds, monthly invoicing, caps, and rate limits in the relevant account.
- Verify the estimate against current billing information. Rates and account terms change, so confirm the live rate card and dashboard before committing to a budget.
This estimate is a planning aid, not a benchmark: actual charges depend on the workload and the provider’s accounting of usage.

How do credits and billing differ across providers?
| Provider or route | Billing mechanics | Important qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI API | Model-specific API prices include input, cached input, and output categories. | Eligible regional-processing endpoints have a 10% uplift for models released on or after March 5, 2026. Check the live pricing page for endpoint eligibility and current rates. |
| OpenAI ChatGPT personal plans | Flexible-use credits apply after included usage on eligible features. | OpenAI states, “These credits are not API credits.” Availability, purchase amounts, and limits vary by account, region, and plan. |
| OpenAI Business, Enterprise, and Edu | Flexible pricing uses credits. | Usage can depend on model, task complexity, input size, cached input, output length, automation, and mode. See the Business, Enterprise, and Edu rate-card guidance. |
| Google Gemini API | Billing-account tiers, rate limits, and caps govern usage. | For prepay users, an active prepaid balance is required before eligible Google Cloud credits are applied; eligible credits are used before the prepay balance. Users who opened accounts after March 2, 2026 cannot use the mentioned $300 welcome credit for Gemini API or AI Studio usage. Check the live page for current account eligibility and billing controls. |
| Anthropic Claude API | API and playground usage can use prepaid credits; monthly invoicing is a separate route. | Purchased credits are available immediately, can be managed with auto-reload, expire one year after purchase, and are non-refundable. Only successful API calls and completed tasks are charged; failed requests are not. |
Provider-specific rules are not interchangeable. For Google’s current billing-account details, consult Gemini API billing documentation. For Anthropic’s credit and payment terms, consult Claude API credit-system guidance.

No. OpenAI explicitly distinguishes credits for flexible usage on eligible personal ChatGPT features from API credits. Personal credits are used after included usage where eligible, and availability, purchase amounts, and limits vary by account, region, and plan. Do not assume a ChatGPT balance can pay for API usage—or that API billing funds ChatGPT features. Check the applicable account’s terms in OpenAI’s personal-plan credits guidance.

What should you check before buying or budgeting credits?
- Product and account eligibility: Confirm your region, plan, account age where relevant, and whether the feature or credit offer applies to you.
- Expiration and refunds: Review the provider’s terms for the specific credit type. Anthropic’s prepaid API credits expire one year after purchase and are non-refundable; that rule should not be generalized to other providers.
- Allowance order: Find out whether included or promotional credits are applied before or after prepaid funds, and what happens when they run out.
- Caps and rate limits: A spending cap or request limit can affect whether a workload completes, even if you have estimated its token cost.
- Current rates: Use live provider documentation for the exact model, route, and mode. A dated rate card is useful context, not a promise of a current price.
