Public relations still builds attention and credibility through media coverage. It now has another reputation surface to watch: the answers people get when they ask AI platforms about a brand, its category, or its leaders. PR teams cannot control those answers or guarantee a mention, but they can measure what appears, check the sources behind it, and work with marketing and search teams to improve the quality of the public evidence available.
Why AI-generated answers matter to PR
When someone asks an AI platform for a product recommendation or a summary of a company, the result can shape perception without the person visiting a news article or the brand’s website. That makes AI-generated answers a communications surface distinct from traditional media coverage—not a replacement for it.

The issue has moved into practitioner guidance and industry tools. The PRCA AI Innovation Group’s 2026 guide, Beyond Visibility: How to Measure GEO, addresses measuring visibility in AI-generated answers. Cision announced an AI Visibility Dashboard on July 14, 2026, describing monitoring, analysis, and benchmarking across leading AI platforms. Cision’s announcement is a vendor description, not an independent assessment of the feature.
What should PR teams measure?
A simple count of whether a brand appears misses important differences between answers. The PRCA guide identifies prompts, citations, sentiment, share of voice, and competitor presence as measurement dimensions. For a useful picture, teams also need to check whether the answer is accurate and whether the cited sources are credible.
#1 Best Overall
- Prompts: Which questions were asked, and do they represent real brand, category, and buyer-intent queries?
- Presence and prominence: Does the brand appear, and is it named as an option, described neutrally, or recommended?
- Citations and source types: What sources appear behind the answer, and are they independent, authoritative, and relevant?
- Accuracy and sentiment: Are descriptions factually correct, current, and fair?
- Share of voice and competitors: How often does the brand appear relative to relevant alternatives in the same prompt set?
These measures describe observed answers; they do not establish why a system produced them or prove that a communications activity caused a change.
How to establish a repeatable baseline
A practical measurement routine starts with a fixed prompt set and consistent recording. This is an implementation approach based on the measurement dimensions in PRCA’s 2026 guide, rather than a claim that PRCA mandates one specific workflow.
Rank #2
- Select representative questions. Include prompts about the brand, its category, and buyer needs. Keep wording stable across measurement rounds and record the exact prompt.
- Run the prompts on the platforms you intend to monitor. Note the platform and date, since answers can vary across systems and over time.
- Capture the complete answer and citations. Record whether the brand appears, how it is characterized, and which sources are shown. Note when no citation is provided.
- Review quality, not just visibility. Assess factual accuracy, sentiment, and the relevance and credibility of cited sources.
- Compare competitors using the same prompts. This gives context to mention counts and helps distinguish broad category visibility from brand-specific presence.
- Repeat the same process and report changes carefully. Separate what changed in observed answers from explanations about why it changed; a before-and-after comparison alone does not establish cause.
Why the sources behind an answer matter
A mention is not automatically a reputational win. An inaccurate description, an outdated claim, or a weak source can be more concerning than a missing citation. PR teams should therefore examine the evidence that appears alongside an answer rather than treating visibility as the sole objective.

Burson’s June 2, 2026 announcement of its agency research, “The Credibility Paradox,” frames generative engine optimization (GEO) around believability and independent corroboration across media coverage, reviews, and public conversation. Axios’s summary of Muck Rack research identifies journalists, influencers, customers, and the public among the external sources AI systems use. These sources support the importance of a varied public evidence base; they do not show that any one source type guarantees inclusion.

For communications teams, the practical work is two-sided: keep owned brand information accurate and consistent, while earning credible third-party coverage and attending to other relevant public sources. That can improve the quality of information available about a brand, but it cannot ensure that a platform will cite or recommend it.
Who owns AI visibility?
PR has a clear contribution to make through reputation, earned media, source quality, and correction of inaccurate public information. It does not follow that PR should own every part of AI visibility. A 2026 peer-reviewed article in Public Relations Review describes PR as structurally decentered in the AI ecosystem, and Axios reported in July 2026 that organizations were still sorting out who owns GEO.

A workable arrangement is shared responsibility: communications can assess reputation and source credibility; marketing can connect visibility work to audience and category questions; and search or analytics teams can help structure measurement and reporting. Each organization should decide who maintains the prompt set, reviews accuracy, approves responses to harmful errors, and communicates results. The evidence does not establish a universal ownership model.

Tools may help teams monitor and compare answers, but the available vendor announcements do not provide neutral testing or a basis for ranking products. Before choosing any approach, check whether it supports:
- Coverage of the AI platforms relevant to your audience.
- Control over prompts and the ability to repeat the same prompt set.
- Capture of citations and source types, not just brand mentions.
- Sentiment and accuracy review, including a way for people to inspect the underlying answer.
- Competitor benchmarking on comparable prompts.
- Exports or reporting that preserve dates, prompts, platform, and observed results.
- Clear separation between observed changes and claims about what caused them.
Cision describes its AI Visibility Dashboard as monitoring, analyzing, and benchmarking brand appearances across leading AI platforms. That description comes from Cision’s July 14, 2026 announcement; it is not independent evidence of coverage, accuracy, or comparative performance.
What adoption statistics do—and do not—tell you
Two 2026 announcements report a 91% figure, but they measure different things. Scribewise and Scrunch said that 91% of surveyed marketing and PR professionals reported their organizations had an AI search strategy. Their July 16 announcement described a survey of 602 people in the United States and also characterized a gap between claimed readiness and action. Separately, Cision said 91% of surveyed professionals reported using generative AI in their workflow; its announcement also reported use for idea generation by 73% and writing or content refinement by 68%.
These are survey findings reported by the organizations involved, not evidence that AI visibility programs are effective. Workflow use is not the same as having an organizational search strategy, and neither statistic shows that a brand appears more often in AI-generated answers.
