You can stream portrait video on YouTube from the mobile app, or set up YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to deliver vertical and horizontal versions of one live event. For a dual-format stream, set up the vertical version before going live: YouTube says you cannot add it after the stream has started.
Choose how to go live
| Method | What you set up | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube mobile app | Start a live stream on your phone and choose portrait orientation. | Quick updates and on-the-go streams. |
| YouTube Studio Live Control Room | Set up horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together; choose how the vertical view is composed. | Creators who want landscape viewing for desktop or TV alongside vertical viewing on mobile. |
| Third-party encoder | Send matching horizontal and vertical feeds using RTMP(S) and separate stream keys. | Encoder-based production or custom feeds. |
With Live Control Room’s dual-stream setup, YouTube uses one go-live notification and a shared stream URL, with the same live chat for both formats. People browsing the Shorts feed in the YouTube mobile app see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version. YouTube’s feature comparison notes that viewers in the vertical feed cannot use clickable links in chat or the channel description, live pre-roll or mid-roll ads, Premieres, or Live Redirect in that feed. Feature availability can change, so check YouTube’s current comparison before relying on a particular surface.

Check eligibility first
- YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and creators must be at least 16.
- For mobile live streaming, YouTube also lists a minimum of 50 subscribers, channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
Eligibility rules and feature availability can change. Confirm that the channel can go live before scheduling an event or preparing a production around a specific format.

Stream portrait video from the YouTube mobile app
- Confirm mobile eligibility. Make sure live streaming is enabled on the channel and that it meets YouTube’s mobile requirements.
- Prepare the phone. Charge it, consider connecting an external battery pack, and turn on Do Not Disturb to reduce interruptions. YouTube estimates that streaming may use 1% of a phone’s battery per minute; treat that as a rough planning estimate, not a guarantee for every device or stream.
- Set portrait orientation. Decide how the phone will be held, then lock screen rotation so an accidental tilt does not change the framing.
- Check the shot and connection. Consider lighting and the limitations of the phone camera. Check that the internet connection is strong enough for the stream.
- Run an unlisted test. Check both picture and sound in an unlisted stream before the real event.
- Go live. In the YouTube app, tap Create → Live and follow the on-screen setup.
Stream horizontal and vertical versions together in Live Control Room
- Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio on a computer, open Create → Go live, then create a scheduled stream or select one.
- Open the layout controls. In Manage, select the stream and choose Edit layout in the vertical preview.
- Choose the vertical composition. Select center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked. Adjust zoom and position as needed. Center crop is the default. If you edit the layout in the canvas, YouTube says it can still be adjusted while live.
- Check both previews. Confirm that the vertical crop or layout keeps the important content in frame and that the horizontal composition is also ready.
- Start only after the format is ready. YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after the stream has started.
In this workflow, Live Control Room creates horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats together by default. The vertical layout controls let you choose how the picture is adapted, rather than relying on the default center crop.

Send both formats from a third-party encoder
- In Live Control Room’s Stream tab, change the vertical preview from Auto to Encoder.
- Choose RTMP(S) and select the second stream key for the vertical version. Send the matching portrait and landscape feeds to their respective keys.
- Keep the two feeds aligned in content and timing so viewers in either format see the intended version of the event.
- Review the Live Control Room preview before starting, and confirm the event can be accessed on mobile.
A YouTube stream key is a credential that tells an encoder where to send a feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it as sensitive: do not share it publicly. YouTube recommends preparing an encoder at least two hours before the event, starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, reviewing the preview, checking the integrity of any local recording, and confirming that the event works on mobile. Its network guidance recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the combined stream bitrate requirement.
Prepare and troubleshoot the stream
The phone changes orientation unexpectedly
Lock screen rotation before going live and test the phone in the position you intend to use. Recheck framing after changing the device position.

The picture or sound is not right
Use an unlisted test to check both. Revisit camera framing, lighting, and audio before the event; do not assume a preview alone confirms that the finished stream looks and sounds as intended.
The connection seems unreliable
Check the internet connection before streaming. For encoder-based dual streaming, account for the combined bitrate of both feeds and leave the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends.

In Live Control Room, open Manage → Edit layout and try fit to phone width or stacked instead of the default center crop. Adjust zoom and position, then inspect both the vertical and horizontal previews.
The vertical option is missing after the stream starts
YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added once a stream has started. Stop and configure the intended dual-stream format before starting the event rather than expecting to add it midstream.

When a cloud loop is a better fit
The methods above are for a live camera or encoder feed. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded, prerecorded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not go live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encode. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, plus 24/7 looping and playlists and support from the StreamNeo team. You can choose a day, week, month, six months, or year and cancel any time; UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo for details. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
