You cannot move a carrier phone number onto a tablet by installing an app. Porting transfers a number from one phone provider to another, and a tablet is not a phone provider. Installing a calling app gives the tablet a different service, usually with a different number. The option that fits depends on what you want the tablet to do: place calls from an app-based number, ring on the tablet when your existing number is called, or move the number itself to a new service. Only the last of these is a port, and it is the one most likely to fail or cost you the number if it is done carelessly.
Start with the outcome you actually want
People searching for “port number to tablet” usually mean one of four things. The table below separates them, because each needs a different service and a different set of rules.

Porting is the only option in that list that changes which company hosts the number. Everything else leaves your carrier line where it is.
Why a direct port usually fails
A port is a request to a receiving provider, and that provider decides whether the number qualifies. Failure usually traces to one of three things: the number is not eligible for that service, the account type does not match the port rules, or the account is in the wrong place or on the wrong plan. Installing an app on a tablet does not change any of these conditions.

Google’s own rules show how specific these conditions are. Google states that not all mobile numbers can be ported into a personal Google Voice account, and its port-in support covers specified account types and US mobile numbers. These rules belong to Google Voice. They do not establish that every tablet or every calling app rejects ports, and other services set their own requirements.
What to do instead
Pick the route that matches your goal. The first two options keep your current carrier line in place, which is the safer choice if that number matters to you.
Option 1: Use an app number for calls over the internet
Google Voice gives you a separate number for calls, texts, and voicemail, and you can use it from a browser or a mobile device. Its iPhone and iPad guidance describes calls placed over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Availability depends on your account and location, so confirm that it works where you live before you rely on it.

- Install the Google Voice app on the iPad from the App Store and sign in with your Google account.
- Follow the setup screens to choose an app number. Menu labels change between app versions, so follow the on-screen prompts rather than a fixed path.
- Place a test call over Wi-Fi, then over mobile data if the tablet has cellular service, and confirm the caller ID shown to the recipient is the number you expect.
Option 2: Link your existing mobile number
Google Voice documents linking a mobile number so that calls to your Google Voice number can ring the linked phones. Linking is not porting. Your existing line remains with its carrier, and you keep paying that carrier as before. Check the linking behaviour in your own account and app settings, because the exact result, including which devices ring, depends on how the account is configured.
Option 3: Use call forwarding only if your carrier supports that direction
Call forwarding is the route most often suggested as a workaround, and it is the least predictable. A secondary tech article discusses forwarding in this context, but carrier menus and charges vary. The official Google pages describe forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to linked phones. They do not establish that any carrier line can forward to any app number. Ask your carrier which forwarding options your plan includes, and what they cost, before you change any settings.
Option 4: Port the number, with the checks below first
Porting is the right choice only if you want the number to leave your carrier and live with the new service. Before you start:

- Confirm eligibility. For Google Voice personal accounts, Google says not all mobile numbers are eligible. Check that your account type and number country match its port-in requirements.
- Know the fee. Google lists a $20 port-in fee for personal accounts. Fees for other services are not established here, so ask the receiving provider directly.
- Keep your current plan active until the port completes. Google advises against cancelling your phone plan first and says the existing provider cancels phone service once the port completes.
- Ask about timing. No universal porting timeline is established. Ask the receiving provider how long the transfer takes for your number and what happens to service during it.
Calls, data, and what happens when Wi-Fi drops
Internet calls are not free of data cost. Google’s internet-calling help page gives an estimate of about 0.2 MB per minute for a Google Voice call. The page notes that actual usage depends on network quality and speed, and the page does not state a publication date.

This matters if you expect an internet-only call. Start the call from inside the Google Voice app, and check the app’s current call settings. Do not assume that the tablet’s built-in Phone app uses the same route.
A Bluetooth headset can improve call audio. Google lists Bluetooth among supported audio devices for Google Voice calls on iPhone and iPad, but it warns that device buttons may not always answer or end calls. A headset does not transfer a number or provide a carrier plan.

Emergency calling
Do not treat a calling app as an emergency line. Google states that emergency calls through Google Voice are available only for Google Workspace accounts managed by a work or school. When a call goes through the mobile carrier, emergency calls are handled by the carrier. Keep a working phone line, such as your carrier phone or a landline, for emergencies.
Cellular tablets and native carrier calls
A cellular tablet can use mobile data, but that does not mean it can make and receive ordinary carrier voice calls. Whether a specific tablet on a specific plan can place calls, share your existing number, or forward calls is not established by the sources available here. Ask the manufacturer and your carrier about that exact model and country before you assume it works.
If something goes wrong
- The number is not eligible for porting. Use an app number (Option 1) or link the existing line (Option 2). Your current carrier line stays in service.
- Calls use your carrier minutes unexpectedly. Check whether Wi-Fi was available when the call started. If it was not, the call may have used the carrier route.
- You cancelled your phone plan before the port finished. Contact the receiving provider and your former carrier immediately, and ask what can still be done. Google’s guidance is to wait until the port completes before cancelling, so do not repeat that step.
The short version: a tablet can handle calls through an app or a linked number, but it cannot take over a carrier number by itself. Decide whether you need the number to move, and use the route that matches that decision.
