The phrase points to a broad materials-science field, not one plastic or one color-changing mechanism: different polymers can change their optical appearance in response to light, heat, electricity, or mechanical forces.
What are polychromic plastics?
Polychromic plastics are best understood as polymers whose optical properties can change in response to a stimulus. The broader technical term is chromogenic or stimulus-responsive polymers. Depending on the material, the visible effect may be a color shift, a change in transparency or reflectivity, or another change in how light is handled.

There is no single universal “polychromic plastic.” An overview published by the American Chemical Society (ACS) groups a range of effects under chromogenic polymers, including electrochromism, photochromism, photoelectrochromism, piezochromism, mechanochromism, tunable electroluminescence, and photonic band-gap structures. These terms describe different phenomena, so a polymer that responds to voltage should not be assumed to behave like one that responds to sunlight or pressure. What can make a polymer change its appearance?
Electricity: electrochromism
In electrochromic conjugated polymers, applying or removing an electrical stimulus changes the material’s doping state. The resulting change in the polymer backbone’s electronic structure alters its optical behavior, such as the light it absorbs or transmits. This is a specific explanation for electrochromic conjugated polymers, not a general mechanism for every color-changing material. ACS review of multicolored electrochromism in polymers.

Electrochromic devices can be designed to work through absorption or transmission, reflection, or patterned color effects. The device format affects what the viewer sees and how the material is incorporated; it is distinct from the underlying polymer chemistry.
Light and other stimuli
Photochromic and photoelectrochromic effects involve light-related responses, while piezochromism and mechanochromism are associated with pressure or mechanical action. Tunable electroluminescence concerns light emission rather than simply a material changing the color of reflected light. Photonic band-gap structures control optical behavior through their structure. The ACS overview groups these in the same broad field, but they should not be treated as interchangeable technologies.

Heat
Temperature-responsive chromogenic polymers can take several forms. Fraunhofer IAP describes development work involving hydrogels, thermoplastic foils, thermosets, and additives. The page does not provide stable product specifications, so it establishes the range of forms being developed rather than particular performance figures or commercial availability. How can electrochromic polymers produce multiple colors?
An ACS review describes several routes to multicolored electrochromic materials: modifying a parent polymer through substitution, controlling the polymerization of comonomers, or combining homopolymers in blends or laminates. These are different materials-design strategies; the review does not make them a universal recipe for every polymer or device.

The same review discusses line-patterning, screen-printing, and metal vapor deposition as approaches to patterning electrochromic devices. These are documented research approaches, not evidence that each method is commercially suitable for every application.

A useful comparison looks beyond the number of colors a material can show. The ACS review identifies several performance and design considerations:

- Optical contrast: How much the appearance changes between states.
- Coloration efficiency: How effectively the electrochemical change produces an optical change.
- Switching speed: How quickly the device changes state.
- Stability: How well the material or device retains its behavior over repeated use or time.
- Device format: Whether the design works through absorption or transmission, reflection, or another arrangement.
- Patterning approach: How colors or active regions are arranged in the finished device.
These criteria help explain why two materials described as multicolored may not be equivalent: one could offer stronger contrast, while another may switch faster or suit a different device layout. The review provides the framework for comparison, but the available source details do not establish numerical values for a specific material or product.
