Researchers have obtained spectroscopic evidence for B80−, an 80-atom boron anion whose cage has been described as a boron analogue of buckminsterfullerene, the football-shaped carbon molecule C60. The observation is a significant step, but it does not yet settle whether neutral B80’s most stable structure is the proposed buckyball: the report said that confirmation with density functional theory (DFT) was still outstanding.
What was observed—and what remains uncertain?
A Brown University team led by Lai-Sheng Wang reported evidence for B80− using photoelectron spectroscopy. The minus sign matters: the observed species was a negatively charged boron cluster, not an isolated neutral B80 molecule or a boron version of C60 already established in every respect. Chemistry World’s 3 June 2026 report describes the spectrum as consistent with a highly symmetric cage and a considerable energy gap.

The evidence supports a buckyball-like boron cage, but the report did not present the full structural question as settled. At publication, the team had not confirmed with DFT calculations that the proposed buckyball is the most stable form of B80. The researchers believed available DFT methods underestimated the cage’s stability; an improved calculation could make a more direct comparison with C60 possible.
How the team made the spectrum readable
The researchers generated boron clusters by laser vaporisation, using helium as a carrier gas. The freshly made clusters were too hot for a clear measurement. The team improved cooling by mixing argon into the helium, and observed B80− when the carrier gas was seeded with 20% argon. With the clusters cooled more effectively, the photoelectron spectrum became resolvable and, according to the report, surprisingly simple.

That spectrum is the experimental basis for the structural interpretation described in the news report. It is not, by itself, the pending DFT confirmation of the most stable neutral B80 structure.
How the proposed boron cage differs from C60
C60 is a carbon cage with the familiar football-like fullerene shape. The reported B80− cage is described instead as a symmetric arrangement of triangles interspersed with several pentagons. It is not simply the same carbon framework with boron substituted for carbon.

The geometry also differs from a 2007 computational proposal by N. G. Szwacki, A. Sadrzadeh and B. I. Yakobson: that model placed a boron atom at the centre of each hexagon. Earlier in Wang’s team’s work, B40 had been reported with hexagonal holes at its top and bottom and heptagonal holes around its sides. These are distinct proposed or observed boron-cluster structures, not interchangeable descriptions of one molecule.
What the 20-year effort establishes
Chemistry World described the investigation as a 20-year effort. Wang characterized it as a difficult project, saying, “It’s been quite a long battle. This is probably the most important result in my whole career, but it has been the most difficult paper for me to publish.” That is his assessment of the work, not an independently measured ranking of its scientific importance. Theoretical chemist Arnout Ceulemans of the University of Leuven said, “I have a lot of confidence [in the study] and I am very pleased that it is finally coming out.”
