It is an alternative way to carry out dearomatisation—not a new definition of the reaction—and “without nasty reagents” should be read as a relative comparison, not a claim that the procedure is harmless.
What dearomatisation means here
Dearomatisation converts an aromatic ring into a less aromatic product. In the example behind this title, the reaction is a Birch reduction: an aromatic ring such as benzene is reduced to a cyclohexadiene. The Pittsburgh method changes how that reduction is carried out; it does not change what dearomatisation means.

How the reported method differs
Conventional Birch reductions generally use an alkali metal dissolved in liquid ammonia. The resulting solvated electrons drive the reduction. Chemistry World’s 2021 account says traditional protocols require cooling below −33 °C to prevent ammonia from evaporating.
The University of Pittsburgh team’s reported alternative uses THF instead of liquid ammonia, with lithium and ethylenediamine used to generate the reducing system. Chemistry World reports that the method works at temperatures up to 26 °C. That is the reported upper operating temperature, not proof that every substrate or reaction scale works at that temperature.

What “without nasty reagents” does—and does not—mean
The headline is relative to the conventional liquid-ammonia approach and to earlier alternatives that Chemistry World characterized as difficult to control, cryogenic, or dependent on expensive reagents. The report does not establish that the new procedure is harmless or universally safer. It still involves reactive laboratory chemicals, and the available account is not a substitute for a full hazard assessment or the primary paper’s experimental safety information.
Chemistry World reported an ethylenediamine cost of $2.67 per mole in 2021. That is a historical figure, not a current market price. The same article cited costs over $1,000 (£742) per mole for reagents used in some earlier alternatives; that comparison is not a universal benchmark for all such methods.

What the report establishes—and what it leaves open
The Chemistry World report establishes the solvent substitution, the lithium/ethylenediamine reducing system, and the reported temperature comparison. It does not provide enough detail to establish substrate scope, yields, selectivity, reaction times, scale-up performance, or a complete comparison of hazards and waste handling. Those details should not be inferred from the temperature claim or the headline.

The report cites J. Burrows, S. Kamo and K. Koide, Science (2021), DOI 10.1126/science.abk3099. For experimental scope and procedure, consult the primary paper rather than assuming the short news account supplies those details.
