Scientists have filmed fullerene-related transformations in specialized transmission electron microscopes (TEMs), but the experiments do not show one universal way that every fullerene forms. Some captured graphite or graphene changing under electron irradiation; another recorded a prepared molecular precursor converting into C60. A separate study of “real-time” C60 growth followed molecules assembling into a surface film, not an individual fullerene cage.
What does “filming fullerene formation” mean?
Fullerenes are carbon structures whose atoms form closed cages. In several experiments, researchers used in-situ TEM—electron microscopy performed while a sample is being observed—to record changes in carbon structures. These are specialized laboratory observations, not ordinary video of a naturally occurring process: the sample, microscope environment, and electron beam are part of the experimental context.

The studies cover different starting materials and transformations. A proposed route from a graphene sheet is not interchangeable with irradiation of graphite particles or synthesis from a deliberately prepared molecule. Nor is growth of a film made of C60 molecules the same event as formation of one C60 cage.
What the different experiments captured
| Experiment | Starting material | What was observed or proposed | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controlled-environment TEM (1996) | Previously untreated graphite particles | The study reported single-layer fullerene shells forming at particle surfaces while attempting to recreate some physical conditions found in an arc-discharge chamber. | Shell formation in that experiment; not proof that all fullerenes follow this route. Journal of Crystal Growth study |
| Graphene imaging (2010) | A graphene sheet | Real-time TEM imaging was combined with quantum-chemical modelling to present a proposed sequence from sheet to cage. | A specific top-down pathway proposed for the observed transformation. Nature Chemistry study |
| Graphitic-specimen irradiation (1996) | Graphite and other graphitic specimens | Under electron irradiation, lattice planes were reported to unwind, bend, and close into irregular cages, which then shrank and undulated until fullerene-like spherical cages remained. | An irradiation-driven cage-evolution observation distinct from the graphene paper’s specific sequence. The authors proposed sputtering and atom exchange through electron collisions as an explanation. Chemical Physics Letters study |
| Molecular-precursor video (2021) | A truxene derivative, C60H30, on graphene | Continuous high-resolution TEM video imaging captured electron-beam-induced conversion to C60 through cyclodehydrogenation. | A bottom-up route from a prepared molecular precursor, rather than a sheet or graphite particle. ACS Nano study |
| C60 surface-film study (2014) | C60 molecules on a surface | In-situ specular and diffuse X-ray scattering, together with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, tracked nucleation and multilayer growth. | Growth of a molecular film, not direct imaging of an individual cage forming. Nature Communications study |
How the graphene-to-cage sequence was described
The 2010 graphene study proposed a top-down mechanism with four critical stages. Its sequence is an interpretation of the imaged transformation supported by modelling, not a rule established for every fullerene:

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.
- If you’re not in love with it for whatever reason, we’ll give you a full replacement or refund—no questions asked. If you have any doubt, please tell us. With nothing to worry about, or even to share with your friends, try it now.
- Carbon loss at an edge: atoms are removed from the graphene sheet’s edge.
- Pentagons form: five-membered carbon rings appear in the structure.
- The sheet curves: the developing structure bends into a bowl-like form.
- The opening closes: the open edges join to form a fullerene cage.
This proposed route helps explain how a flat carbon network could become a closed, curved structure. The other experiments in the comparison begin from different materials or track different processes, so they should not be treated as confirmations of this same four-stage pathway.
Why the electron beam matters
In the irradiation studies and the 2021 precursor experiment, the electron beam is part of the conditions under which the transformation was observed. The 1996 controlled-environment TEM study instead attempted to recreate some physical conditions associated with an arc-discharge chamber. These are distinct experimental contexts: beam-driven observations should not be presented as direct footage of thermal arc-discharge production.

- Easy to Understand: This molecular model is extremely helpful for both teachers and students. It sparks kids' interest in chemistry by turning invisible molecular and atomic shapes into something tangible. This makes it easier for children to grasp molecular geometry and serves as a fantastic hands-on learning tool!
- Great for Teaching Science at All Levels: With 240 pieces, including 86 atoms and 154 bonds, this kit caters to students from 7th grade up to the graduate level.
- Made from Safe Materials: All models are constructed from food - grade, eco - friendly plastics, including new PP plastic for atom balls, LDPE plastic for link bonds, and ABS plastic for the box.
- 3D Chemical Teaching Molecular Model: It can display chemical structures, molecular bonds, and bond angles in various directions. Use it to demonstrate basic molecular geometry, chemical structures, and stereochemistry through 3D modeling.
- Two Types of Chemical Structure Models: The ball - and - stick model uses balls for atoms and sticks for bonds. In the space - filling model, balls are proportionally sized and positioned close to each other, mimicking how atoms are arranged in real molecules.
That distinction also limits what the videos establish. They show transformations in particular samples under particular microscope conditions; they do not, by themselves, establish that the same mechanism dominates in other production settings or for all fullerene molecules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy “real-time C60 growth” can mean something else
The phrase can refer to molecules of C60 nucleating and building up a multilayer film on a surface. In the 2014 study, researchers used in-situ X-ray scattering and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate that surface growth. It is relevant to fullerene materials, but it is not a recording of carbon atoms closing into a single fullerene cage.

Can fullerene formation be filmed with ordinary equipment?
The cited observations required specialized in-situ microscopy or X-ray scattering methods. They do not provide a general operating protocol or support the idea that a consumer camera or ordinary microscope can record cage formation. The footage is a way to study controlled nanoscale transformations, not a process visible at everyday scale.

What the footage does—and does not—establish
- It establishes that researchers have observed fullerene-related transformations in specialized experimental settings, including graphite-shell formation, graphene-to-cage transformation, and precursor-to-C60 conversion.
- It does not establish a universal formation mechanism. Starting material and experimental conditions differ, and the graphene study’s four-stage route is a proposed mechanism for that case.
- It does not make film growth equivalent to cage formation. Tracking C60 molecules assembling on a surface addresses a different process.
