Polling vs. Events for Node.js Background Work

Polling can suit infrequent work when periodic delay is acceptable. Queues and events fit prompt processing, buffering, and explicit recovery needs—but they solve different problems.

Use polling when periodic checks are adequate and the source of truth is easy to query; use a queue- or event-driven design when work should start promptly, needs buffering, or requires explicit retry and recovery behavior. These approaches are related but not interchangeable: a queue stores and dispatches jobs, while an event can notify observers that a job or application state changed. The right choice depends on freshness, failure handling, workload, and operational needs—not a universal performance winner.

What polling and event-driven handling mean

Polling: check repeatedly for work

A polling process checks a source on a recurring basis to see whether work is available or a state has changed. If a check finds nothing, it checks again later. This can be straightforward when arrivals are infrequent and the source can be queried reliably. Its freshness depends on the interval: a change that happens just after a check may wait until the next one is noticed. Idle checks may also do unnecessary work, though the sources here do not quantify the cost for Node.js systems generally.

Events: react to a notification

In event-driven handling, a producer or system emits a notification when work becomes available or something changes, and a consumer responds. This can avoid repeated checks and enable prompt reaction, but notification alone does not guarantee delivery or recovery. Those depend on the transport, its configuration, and how consumers handle failures.

First clarify which kind of event you mean

“Events” can refer to different parts of a background-work system:

  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
  • Queue consumption: a worker claims and processes a stored job.
  • Application or domain events: an application notifies other components that a business-relevant change occurred.
  • Job lifecycle events: an observer is notified that a job is waiting, completed, failed, or progressing.

These solve related but distinct problems. In BullMQ, a Queue adds jobs and a Worker processes them; QueueEvents lets an application observe events across workers. A lifecycle listener is not a substitute for durable job storage. See the BullMQ queue documentation, worker documentation, and event documentation.

Compare the tradeoffs that matter

Consideration Polling Event-driven handling
Trigger Repeated read or check Notification or emitted event
Freshness Depends on the check interval Can react promptly, subject to delivery and consumer health
Idle work May check when nothing is ready May avoid repeated checks, depending on implementation
Reliability Depends on persisted state and retry or recheck behavior Depends on transport, retention, acknowledgments, and recovery design
Operations A simple loop can be easy to operate, but interval and load need care Requires event production, transport, consumer lifecycle, and visibility

These are architectural dimensions, not measured results. The cited documentation does not provide a neutral head-to-head comparison of latency, cost, or throughput, so it cannot establish a universal winner.

When polling is a reasonable fit

  • Work arrives infrequently.
  • A periodic delay before processing is acceptable.
  • The source of truth is easy to query.
  • A lightweight periodic check fits the system you already operate.

Choose an interval with the freshness requirement and load in mind. Shortening it can make changes visible sooner, but it also means checking more often; no generally correct interval is established here.

When a queue or event-driven design is a better fit

  • Work should begin promptly after it becomes available.
  • Arrivals can spike and need buffering.
  • Workers should scale separately from the application that creates jobs.
  • Retries and recovery after worker failure are explicit requirements.

BullMQ documents workers running in the same Node.js process or across separate processes and machines. Its overview also lists retries, crash recovery, scheduling, and concurrency features. Those are BullMQ capabilities, not guarantees that apply to every queue. The queue guide and worker guide explain its model.

What BullMQ’s events do—and do not—guarantee

BullMQ’s QueueEvents observes events from all workers. Its documentation says it uses Redis streams and contrasts stream delivery guarantees during disconnections with standard pub-sub. The event stream is automatically trimmed; the documented default is approximately 10,000 events, and the size is configurable. This is BullMQ-specific behavior, not infinite event retention. See BullMQ’s event documentation.

BullMQ describes its design as having “Minimal CPU usage due to a polling-free design” in its official overview. That is the vendor’s description of BullMQ, not an independent benchmark or proof that every event-driven system uses less CPU than every polling system.

Design for failure whichever approach you choose

  • Make processing idempotent where possible. A retry or duplicate notification should not cause harmful repeated effects.
  • Define worker-failure behavior. Decide how unfinished work is detected and whether it is retried, recovered, or surfaced for intervention.
  • Make work visible. Operators should be able to see queued and failed work and determine whether consumers are healthy.

A queue library may offer retry and recovery features, but the application still needs a policy for duplicate work, failed processing, and monitoring.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Set the freshness requirement. If waiting until a periodic check is acceptable, polling remains an option; if work should begin promptly, favor a notification or queue-driven path.
  2. Identify the source of truth. Confirm where pending work is stored and how it can be found again after a process restarts.
  3. Specify failure and delivery behavior. Decide how retries, missed notifications, duplicate processing, and consumer disconnections are handled.
  4. Account for workload shape. Consider both normal arrivals and spikes, and whether workers need to scale independently.
  5. Choose the simplest design that meets those requirements. A listener for lifecycle visibility is not a replacement for a queue that stores and dispatches jobs.

BullMQ’s quick start requires a Redis service for its example, and its official overview describes Redis-based queues. Its “polling-free” characterization applies to that product’s design; it should not be generalized into a performance result for all Node.js background systems. See the BullMQ quick start and official overview.
