For an Android feature that reacts when a user enters or leaves an area, register geofences and handle their transition events instead of keeping a high-frequency location loop running in the background. Geofencing is designed for battery-aware proximity monitoring, but it trades immediate, uniform delivery for lower power use: alerts can be delayed, and Android does not guarantee the same timing on every device.
Build around transitions, not continuous polling
Android’s Geofencing API uses the Fused Location Provider to monitor regions without continuously querying location. Register the regions the feature needs with GeofencingClient.addGeofences(GeofencingRequest, PendingIntent). When a transition occurs, the PendingIntent delivers an event to your app; a BroadcastReceiver can receive it and initiate the appropriate background work. See Android’s geofencing guide.

Keep the receiver’s work focused. Identify the event, validate it against the app’s current state, and hand off work that can be deferred to a suitable scheduler. Make transition handling idempotent: delivery timing and process lifecycle are outside the app’s direct control, so processing the same logical transition more than once should not produce duplicate actions. This is an engineering safeguard, not a guarantee that Android will deliver duplicate events.
A transition should not launch an activity just because a geofence fired. Make app-visible components appear in response to user action; use an appropriate notification or background task when the transition itself requires a response.

Choose the transition semantics deliberately
Model enter, exit, and dwell as distinct product events. Enter or exit is appropriate when the feature should respond to crossing a boundary. Dwell is useful when a brief pass-by should not count as a visit: Android recommends GEOFENCE_TRANSITION_DWELL with a suitable loitering delay for that case. The right delay depends on what the feature considers a meaningful stop, not on a universal platform setting.
Choose the battery and latency trade-off
Location power use depends on three related choices: accuracy, how often the device computes or delivers locations, and how long the app can wait for a result. For an area-based trigger, geofencing is usually the right starting point. Sustained high-accuracy updates are better reserved for a foreground experience that genuinely needs a live track or point-by-point movement.
| Approach | Useful when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Geofencing | The feature needs to know when a device enters, exits, or dwells in an area. | Lower-power proximity monitoring, with transition timing that can be delayed and is not uniform across devices. |
| Continuous location updates | The feature needs a sustained track or frequent position changes, such as a real-time foreground experience. | More frequent location computation and delivery consume more power; Android also limits background updates. |
| Broad geofence followed by local updates | The feature needs more detail only after the user is near a relevant area. | Adds a two-stage state flow, but avoids keeping granular updates active when they are not needed. |
Android recommends setting a geofence notification-responsiveness value of five minutes or more to preserve power; a longer value may conserve more power if the user experience can tolerate the delay. The responsiveness window is a design input, not an arrival-time promise. Android also reports that geofencing responsiveness changes can improve battery performance by up to 10 times on some devices, comparing tens-of-seconds responsiveness with approximately two minutes. That is a limited platform statement, not a benchmark for a particular app or engine. See Android’s background-location battery guidance.

For background location on Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, apps receive location updates only a few times per hour when they are in the background. This makes continuous polling a poor substitute for region monitoring when the requirement is simply “near this place.” Android’s background-location guidance covers these platform limits.
Use a two-stage design when proximity is only the first signal
If the feature needs more granular location after the user approaches a target area, use a broad geofence to activate the next stage. After entry, request fused location updates at the accuracy and interval the feature actually needs; stop those updates after exit. Android documents this broad-geofence-plus-updates pattern for home- or work-type areas in its real-world location scenarios.
For passive tracking that is genuinely necessary, Android recommends PRIORITY_NO_POWER when possible; otherwise consider balanced or low-power priority rather than sustained high accuracy. Opportunistic locations computed for other apps can reduce location work, but app-side CPU, network, and storage work still has a cost.

Set radius to match real location conditions
Android’s general starting guidance is a geofence radius of at least 100–150 meters for best results. This is not a universal precision guarantee: choose the radius according to the location conditions and the cost of a missed or false transition. The Android geofencing guide describes Wi-Fi location as commonly accurate to about 20–50 meters when Wi-Fi is available; in rural areas without Wi-Fi, accuracy can degrade to hundreds of meters or even kilometers.

- For a narrow boundary, account for uncertainty rather than treating the geofence as a precise physical line.
- If a brief crossing should not trigger an action, consider dwell semantics and a suitable loitering delay rather than relying on a very small radius.
The API generally uses network location to reduce power use and support indoor availability. If the feature needs a tighter boundary than local conditions can reliably provide, reconsider the user-facing promise or use a foreground, higher-accuracy experience only while it is genuinely needed.
Manage the 100-geofence limit as application state
An app can register at most 100 geofences at one time. A static list of every candidate place therefore does not scale beyond that ceiling. Android’s documented approach for large sets is hierarchical: register a broad enclosing region, then add smaller nearby geofences when the device enters and remove them when it exits.

- Persist the places the user or feature wants monitored as desired application state.
- Register a broad region that indicates which part of the larger catalog is relevant.
- On entry, select and register the nearby detailed regions that fit within the active limit.
- On exit, remove detailed regions that are no longer relevant and update the broad-region state as needed.
Which places take priority, how to rank nearby candidates, and when to replace one active fence with another are application-policy decisions. Android describes the hierarchical pattern but does not prescribe a universal ranking or eviction algorithm. Avoid unnecessary registration churn: maintain the active set based on meaningful changes in the user’s relevant region.
Request background access transparently
Geofencing that continues while the app is not visible accesses location in the background. Android says background location should be critical to the app’s core functionality, provide a clear user benefit, and be explained transparently. For apps targeting Android 10 (API 29) or later, verify whether ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION is needed; Android recommends removing it when the feature does not require all-the-time access. Google Play policy is a separate review constraint, and following Android’s best practices does not guarantee approval. See Android’s background-location guidance.
- Ask only for the level of location access needed by the user-facing feature.
- Where the feature’s requirements allow it, keep the experience usable with approximate or coarse location.
- Explain the benefit in context before asking for background access.
- Confirm the runtime permission sequence for the app’s target SDK and the Android versions it supports; requirements vary with platform and target SDK.
Choose background execution to match the work
A geofence transition does not grant unrestricted permission to start a service. Apps targeting Android 12 (API 31) and later generally cannot start a foreground service while running in the background except for specified cases. Android lists a geofencing-related event as an exemption to the general start restriction, but location foreground services have separate while-in-use permission constraints. On Android 14 (API 34) and later, service-type permissions are checked when a service is created; a background app can encounter a SecurityException if it creates a location service without the applicable while-in-use access. Check the exact event, service type, permission, target SDK, and OS version rather than treating the exemption as blanket authorization. See Android’s foreground-service background-start restrictions.

Use WorkManager or another appropriate scheduler for deferrable work after a transition. Keep urgent user-visible work bounded, and use a foreground service only when the work qualifies and the user benefit justifies it—not as a way to bypass battery or background-execution limits.
Design for delayed alerts and recovery
Geofence alerts are asynchronous, not continuous GPS polling. Android’s guidance gives indicative timing of usually under two minutes while moving, about 2–3 minutes on average when background limits apply, and up to six minutes after the device has been stationary for a significant time. These are platform estimates, not an SLA; actual delivery varies with device, OS version, radio conditions, and user settings. Do not make an immediate action depend on every device reporting arrival at the same moment.
Investigate the conditions that can delay or prevent a transition
- The radius may be too small for the available location accuracy.
- Wi-Fi may be disabled, or Wi-Fi scanning may be unavailable.
- Network connectivity may be weak or absent.
- The Network Location Provider may be disabled.
- Behavior can vary by device and Android version.
Use SettingsClient to check location settings and guide users to enable Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi scanning when appropriate. Apps targeting Android 10 and later cannot directly toggle Wi-Fi except in privileged cases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRestore only when the platform says registration may be lost
Android identifies device reboot, app reinstall, app-data clearing, Google Play services data clearing, and GEOFENCE_NOT_AVAILABLE as cases where an app should re-register geofences that are still needed. By contrast, Google Play services upgrades or restarts and location-process crashes are restored by the system, so avoid needless registration churn for those cases. Keep desired fence definitions in persistent application state, separate from assumptions about whether a process is alive, and reconcile the active registration set after documented recovery events. Details are in the geofencing guide.
