A Pokémon TCG set symbol or expansion code identifies the card’s set; its collector number identifies the card’s place in a numbered sequence. The rarity symbol is a separate mark. None of these, by itself, determines whether a card is legal in Standard play.
How to identify a Pokémon card’s set and number
- Find the expansion identifier. Look along the card’s lower edge for the mark that identifies its expansion. Older cards use an expansion symbol; Scarlet & Violet-era cards use an expansion code at the bottom-left instead. Pokémon Support describes the expansion icon as being at the bottom-right, so placement can vary by card layout and era. Pokémon Support’s database guide explains the expansion field, and Pokémon’s Scarlet & Violet announcement documents the change to codes.
- Read the collector number separately. The number printed for the card is not the set symbol or rarity mark. A Pokémon TCG rulebook diagram labels the “expansion symbol” and “collector card number” as different fields and shows an example of
5/39: card 5 in a numbered sequence of 39. The official rulebook diagram illustrates this format. - Identify the rarity mark by its function. Pokémon Support places the rarity symbol in the lower-right corner, though it may sit close to other bottom-edge information. Don’t assume every small mark there is the set identifier. If it is unclear, verify the card in the official database using its expansion and rarity filters.
What the symbols mean
Expansion symbol or code: which set?
The expansion identifier points to the card’s set. Pokémon announced that Scarlet & Violet replaced expansion symbols with expansion codes at the bottom-left of cards. That is why an older card and a newer one may identify their expansions differently. Pokémon’s announcement describes the transition.

Rarity symbol: what rarity category?
Rarity is a separate classification, not another way to read the set name or collector number. In its Scarlet & Violet design explanation, Pokémon retained a circle for common, a diamond for uncommon and a star for rare. It also described double rare as two black stars, ultra rare as two foil stars, illustration rare as one gold star, special illustration rare as a new category, and hyper rare as three gold stars. These notations depend on the card’s era; use the printed mark and verify an uncertain card in the database. Pokémon’s card-aesthetic announcement details those Scarlet & Violet rarity marks.

In a format such as 5/39, the first number is the card’s number in the sequence and the second is the sequence denominator. Do not treat the denominator as a universal count of every card associated with a release: numbering conventions can vary, and the cited rulebook example does not establish a rule for every subset, secret card, promo or era. Organization can also be set-specific. For example, Pokémon’s Black & White expansion page says that expansion grouped cards by type and then Pokédex order; that should not be assumed for all sets.

What the marks can—and cannot—tell you
When comparing two similar cards, check the expansion symbol or code, collector number and rarity mark as separate details. Together they can help distinguish which set and numbered card you are looking at, as well as its rarity classification. They do not establish tournament legality. For Standard play, check the regulation mark and the current format rules instead.
For the 2026 Standard season, Pokémon identifies regulation marks H, I and J as legal. Its announcement gives April 10, 2026, as the in-person rotation date and March 26, 2026, for Pokémon TCG Live. These are season-specific dates and guidance, not a permanent rule; consult the current announcement before relying on them. Pokémon’s 2026 rotation announcement explains the regulation-mark approach and dates.

Verify an unclear card in Pokémon’s database
Pokémon’s TCG Card Database lets you search for cards and use advanced search fields for expansion and rarity. It is a useful way to check an identification based on a card image. Pokémon notes that text not essential to gameplay may not be searchable, so try a card name or keyword rather than flavor text if a query returns no result. The database guide also explains how to use its search fields: How to use the Trading Card Game database.
