One prompt is a useful first check, not a universal ranking: outputs can vary, and apps may differ in tools and controls.
What a same-prompt comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Using identical wording controls one important variable: the task you gave each model. It does not make the systems identical. Hidden instructions, safety behavior, available tools, grounding, and adjustable settings may differ by platform. Google Cloud’s Compare feature, for example, lets users vary prompts, models, parameters, grounding, and safety settings; OpenAI notes that tools, reasoning settings, availability, and usage limits vary across products and model versions.

OpenAI’s evaluation guidance puts the central caveat plainly: “Generative AI is variable.” The same input can produce different outputs, so a single response is not conclusive. For a decision that matters, compare a small set of representative tasks and repeat important runs. Record what you could control and disclose what remained platform-dependent.

Official model pages help identify models and their documented features, but a provider’s description is not independent evidence that one model will do your job best. That decision requires testing your own tasks.

Build a comparison that reflects your work
Choose representative prompts
Start with several tasks you actually expect to do, rather than a collection of puzzles designed to make one model fail. Include a task with an answer you can verify if factual accuracy matters, and another that tests the format, tone, or constraints you need. Use the same prompt and the same supplied context for every model.
Define the scoring rubric first
Before generating answers, decide what counts as a good result for each task. Separate factual correctness from style and usefulness. Relevant criteria may include whether an answer follows instructions, covers required points, handles uncertainty appropriately, stays clear, and meets format constraints. Where you have a reliable reference answer, score against it; otherwise, use a written rubric and human review.
Google Cloud describes a “ground truth” as the preferred answer against which a response can be compared. For open-ended work without a single correct answer, specify observable standards instead of relying on a general impression of intelligence.

Align settings where possible
Use the same context and, where the interfaces permit, align sampling settings such as temperature, output limits, system instructions, and access to tools or grounding. Record settings rather than assuming defaults match. If consumer apps do not expose equivalent controls, say that the comparison reflects those apps as used, not a controlled model-only test.
Save and review answers consistently
Label each saved answer with the model or mode, platform, date, and settings. For human review, hide model identities and randomize the answer order where practical. Check verifiable facts directly; use side-by-side comparisons for subjective qualities such as clarity or usefulness.
Repeat important comparisons
Run key prompts more than once when the choice has meaningful consequences. Note the number of runs and whether quality changed. Report criterion-level results and representative examples instead of reducing everything to one winner score.

What to record for each model
| Comparison area | What to record or ask | How to assess it |
|---|---|---|
| Task quality | Correctness, instruction following, completeness, and success on the task-specific requirement. | Check against a reference answer or the rubric written before the test. |
| Consistency | Whether repeat runs and related prompts are similarly useful. | Repeat important runs and record the run count and meaningful variation. |
| Clarity and usability | Whether the answer is understandable, appropriately concise, and usable for your purpose. | Apply reader-relevant criteria; do not treat length as a proxy for quality. |
| Constraints and format | Required structure, length limits, tone, citations, or machine-readable output. | Count requirements met and identify material omissions. |
| Tools and context | Browsing, grounding, file or media support, integrations, and supplied context. | Record which tools were enabled and whether access was comparable. |
| Speed and cost | Time and price for the tested usage pattern. | Compare the same task and usage assumptions; check current provider terms. |
| Availability and workflow | App versus API, settings, limits, and fit with your existing workflow. | Name the platform and model version, and verify current product documentation. |
When AI judges are part of the process
An AI judge can help compare many answers, but its score is not automatically neutral. OpenAI’s evaluation guidance identifies response-position and verbosity biases in model grading. Randomize which answer appears first, consider pairwise comparisons or pass/fail checks, and inspect close calls. If possible, compare judge decisions with human labels to see whether the judge agrees reliably on your tasks.
Tools for side-by-side and larger-scale evaluation
Google Cloud Compare prompts
Google Cloud’s Compare prompts feature displays prompts and responses side by side. It supports comparisons involving a different prompt, a different model, changed parameters, or ground truth. Its documentation says the feature does not support media prompts or multi-exchange chat prompts.
Google Gen AI evaluation service
For developers and teams with a larger test set, Google’s Gen AI evaluation service overview describes comparing two models by evaluating responses against the same generated tests and comparing overall pass rates. Google’s SDK documentation also describes evaluating third-party models, including API models from OpenAI and Anthropic. For a small number of everyday tasks, a manual rubric may be simpler.
Rank #4
Choose by quality bar and workflow—not a universal winner
OpenAI recommends trying models with the same inputs and using the lightest setting that still meets the quality bar. Its model selection guidance and Anthropic’s model overview describe choices in terms of different workloads and model specifications, rather than establishing a winner for every user. The practical decision is the model that meets your criteria at acceptable speed and cost, with tools and a workflow you can use.
Keep the conclusion tied to the comparison you actually performed: name the model or mode, platform, date, and relevant settings. Lineups, features, limits, and access can change; Anthropic directs readers from its overview to model-specific pages for availability and specifications. A result from one prompt, interface, or date should not be generalized into a timeless ranking of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or AI models as a whole.
For broader evaluation advice, see OpenAI’s evaluation best practices. Historical benchmark tables are not a substitute for a current test of your own tasks: OpenAI’s simple-evals repository cautions that evaluations are sensitive to prompting and says the repository is not actively maintained.
