The Pokémon Trading Card Game has three broad card groups: Pokémon, Energy, and Trainer. Pokémon cards are the creatures that battle. Energy cards pay for their attacks. Trainer cards create effects or give you strategic options. The official rulebook opens its card overview with the line “You’ll find 3 different types of cards in the Pokémon TCG” (Pokémon TCG rulebook).
Beginners often mix this up with a second classification. Grass, Fire, Water and the other symbols are Pokémon and Energy types. They are not the three groups. This guide covers both systems and what each card does.

Two different meanings of “type”
Players use “card type” for two separate things, and the confusion is common enough that it shows up in the official forums as the plain question “Type meanings for tcg”.

| Classification | Values | Answers the question |
|---|---|---|
| Broad card group | Pokémon, Energy, Trainer | What kind of card is this, and what is its job? |
| Pokémon / Energy type | Symbols such as Grass, Fire and Water (11 Energy types in the Scarlet & Violet-era rulebook) | Which Energy symbol does this Pokémon use, and what does an attack cost? |
A Fire-type Pokémon is still a Pokémon card. A Fire Energy card is still an Energy card. The group tells you the role, and the type tells you the symbol.
#1 Best Overall
Pokémon cards: the ones that fight
Pokémon cards represent the Pokémon in battle. Per the official glossary, a Basic Pokémon can be played straight from your hand. An Evolution card is played on top of a Basic Pokémon or another Evolution card.
- Basic: enters play directly.
- Stage 1 and Stage 2: Evolution cards built on a Basic Pokémon (and, for Stage 2, on a Stage 1).
Not every Pokémon follows the same line. Some have no evolutions, and others have fewer steps than the full three. Read the card’s evolution information instead of assuming.

- The Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration Booster Bundle comes with six booster packs from Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration.
- There are a host of treasures to find and secrets to reveal in the Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration.
- This is a great item to start collecting cards from the 30th Celebration collection.
Energy cards: the cost of attacking
Energy cards power attacks. Each attack lists a cost in Energy symbols. Per the rulebook, a specific colored symbol must be matched by Energy of that type. A Colorless symbol can be paid with any Energy type.

Consider an attack costing one Fire symbol and one Colorless symbol. You need a Fire Energy attached for the first part. For the second you can attach anything. Pokémon type and attack cost are related, but they are not the same thing. A Pokémon can have an attack whose cost uses symbols from a different type.
Rank #3
- 3 Pokemon booster packs from various sets
Basic Energy cards are the simplest example of the group. The glossary lists them as a defined category, and they carry a single symbol.
The Scarlet & Violet-era rulebook lists 11 Energy types. It also notes there are no Fairy-type Pokémon cards in the Scarlet & Violet Series, although older expansions have them.

Trainer cards: effects and options
Trainer cards represent items, people, locations and tools that affect play. Since the Scarlet & Violet Series there are four categories. In 2023 The Pokémon Company International announced that “Pokémon Tool will be its own category of Trainer card”, and older Tool cards received errata to match.

- LOTS OF RANDOM CARDS FROM ALL SERIES: You will receive a variety of regular and energy cards. Duplicates may occur.
- BOOST YOUR COLLECTION: With random cards from every series, each lot is a surprise.

Supporter
Supporters are the stronger, more restricted Trainers. In general you may play only one per turn.
Stadium
A Stadium stays in play and affects the game for both players, and the rules limit how many can be in play.
Pokémon Tool
A Tool attaches to a Pokémon and keeps giving its effect while attached.
These are general patterns. The printed text on the card and the current rules decide what an individual card does.
How the three groups compare in play
| Group | Role | How it enters or affects play |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon | Battle and attack | Played as a Basic, or placed on top as an Evolution |
| Energy | Pay attack costs | Attached to Pokémon |
| Trainer | Create effects, give options | Follows its category (Item, Supporter, Stadium, Tool) and its printed text |
Does a card’s group tell you if it is legal?
No. Being a Pokémon, Energy or Trainer card says nothing about tournament legality. Play! Pokémon says Standard cards rotate according to regulation marks, and reprints and errata can also affect legality. Check the current competitive rules and formats page before building a deck for organized play.
