Multiple zone recording (MZR), also called zone bit recording (ZBR) or simply zone recording, is a way of organizing data on a magnetic disk. The tracks are grouped into zones. Every track within a zone holds the same number of sectors, but each zone has a different count, with outer zones holding more than inner ones.
The formal definition
A 1996 patent, “Sector pulse generating apparatus for multiple zone recording of a disk memory,” includes a glossary entry describing the term. It says “multiple zone recording” refers to data recording or reproducing in which a plurality of zones having different maximum sector numbers are provided in the disk memory (patent text on Justia Patents). The key idea is the “different maximum sector numbers”: the sector count per track is not the same across the whole disk.

Why zones exist
A disk track farther from the center has a larger circumference than one near the center. If every track held the same number of sectors, the outer tracks would be stretched thin, with sectors spread over more physical length than they need, and part of the surface would go unused. Course material on magnetic disks explains that in multiple zone recording the outer zones hold more bits, or sectors, per track than the inner zones. This makes better use of the available length on the outer tracks and improves storage utilization compared with a uniform sector count (Computer Organization and Architecture, section 6.1, Gulf University).

- Tracks are grouped into zones. Neighboring tracks share one zone.
- Within a zone, the sector count is constant. Every track in that zone has the same number of sectors.
- Between zones, the count changes. Zones nearer the outer edge have more sectors per track than zones nearer the center.
- Timing must adapt. When the head moves from one zone to another, the recording timing can change, and the drive electronics have to handle that (same Gulf University course material).
The number of zones depends on the device. Textbooks sometimes give an illustrative zone count, but that is not a universal or current specification, so don’t treat any single number as typical for all drives.

Uniform recording versus zone recording
| Aspect | Uniform sectors per track | Multiple zone recording |
|---|---|---|
| Sectors per track | Same on every track | Same within a zone, different between zones |
| Outer-track space | Underused, since the outer tracks are longer | Used more fully, with more sectors on outer zones |
| Storage utilization | Lower | Higher |
| Controller and timing | Simpler | More complex, because timing changes between zones |
The trade-off is capacity against complexity: zoning recovers wasted surface area, and in return the controller must manage zone-dependent timing.

MZR is a method of organizing recording on a magnetic disk. It is not a file system or a setting that a typical buyer can pick, and the sources reviewed do not describe user-selectable zone layouts. They also don’t establish that any particular internal hard disk drive is better because it uses zone recording, so the term works best as a description of how drives lay out data, not as a buying criterion.
