Choose Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon LeafGreen based on the version-exclusive Pokémon you most want to catch—not because one remake offers a better core adventure. Both revisit Kanto; the practical differences today are your preferred Pokémon, whether you want the Nintendo Switch digital release or an original Game Boy Advance cartridge, and whether you plan to play locally with someone else.
What is different between FireRed and LeafGreen?
The central distinction is which Pokémon are exclusive to each version. The official material cited here does not provide a complete, verified list of those exclusives, so it would be misleading to name examples or declare one version better for its collection. Before buying, check a reliable, complete version-exclusive list and choose the game that contains the Pokémon you care about most.

Beyond that choice, the pair share the same Kanto remake premise. The Pokémon Company describes them as returns to Kanto, the setting of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue; Nintendo identifies the remakes as based on the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green games released in Japan in 1996. Nintendo says players can encounter the original 151 Pokémon. Nintendo’s February 2026 announcement also notes features introduced in the Game Boy Advance era, including abilities, natures, weather conditions, held items, and player-character gender selection.

Choose by the Pokémon you want
For most players, this is the deciding factor: identify the version exclusives you want to catch, then select the game that has them. If you do not have a preference, either version gives you the same broad Kanto remake experience.

Choose by release format
The Nintendo Switch editions are digital-only, sold separately, and playable on Nintendo Switch 2 as well as Nintendo Switch. If you specifically want the original 2004 handheld release, look for a Game Boy Advance cartridge instead. Since those are legacy used-media products, check the seller, region, language, and cartridge authenticity before buying; they are not the current Switch editions.
Choose by how you plan to play with friends
For the original Game Boy Advance releases, The Pokémon Company says a wireless adapter shipped with the games. Nintendo describes the Switch versions as supporting local multiplayer without the Game Link Cable used in 2004, while noting that additional games and systems are required. These are different arrangements for different releases, so confirm the specific hardware and software needed for the multiplayer setup you intend to use.

What to know before buying the Switch version
Nintendo announced that both games would be available on February 27, 2026, as separate digital-only releases. Its announcement listed a suggested retail price of $19.99 USD per game and English, French, and Spanish versions. Treat that price as the announcement’s US suggested retail price, not a guarantee of today’s price in every region. Check your regional Nintendo storefront for current availability and price.

Does Pokémon HOME work with these versions?
The Pokémon Company announced that the Switch versions would link with Pokémon HOME beginning in October 2026. Because that date has arrived, check the current official instructions to confirm whether the feature is live for your game and region before buying on the assumption that you can transfer Pokémon. The announcement cited here does not establish transfer restrictions.
