Hugging Face vs. GitHub for Hosting Machine Learning Models

Hugging Face is built around model discovery and ML metadata; GitHub is built around code repositories and releases. Compare their file limits and download behavior before choosing a host.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Hugging Face when you want a model-focused page with ML metadata, discovery, downloads, and optional gated access. Choose GitHub when the model files are modest or you want to distribute versioned artifacts alongside code through repository files, Git LFS, or Releases. For large checkpoints, compare each file with the relevant storage limits and check how users will retrieve it. Many projects use both: GitHub for code and collaboration, Hugging Face for model weights and their model page.

How the platforms differ

Hugging Face and GitHub can both store model artifacts, but their repositories serve different purposes. Hugging Face documents model repositories as part of its Model Hub, with model-specific attributes and workflows. GitHub is a general-purpose code-hosting platform whose repository and release features can also distribute files.

Decision point Hugging Face GitHub
Primary role Model Hub repositories, model discovery, and ML-specific attributes. Hugging Face Models documentation Source-code repositories and project collaboration; files and tagged releases can also distribute model artifacts. GitHub Releases documentation
Model information and discovery Model cards, task and library metadata, integrations, and download metrics are documented. Tags, files, and release notes are available. The cited GitHub documentation does not establish an equivalent ML-specific model catalogue.
Large files Model files use Xet-backed Git repositories, with Git and HTTP/download workflows documented. Hugging Face model uploads Regular Git blocks files above 100 MiB; Git LFS has plan-dependent file limits, and Releases can carry individual assets under 2 GiB.
Access control Optional gated repositories can require authentication and may require author approval for access. Hugging Face gated models Repository visibility and permissions control access. The cited documentation does not establish an equivalent individual gated-model request workflow.

Neither platform choice answers whether a model is being served for inference. Hosting a checkpoint makes its files available under the chosen access and delivery setup; it does not itself run a production inference endpoint.

Choose based on what users need to do

Pick Hugging Face for a model-first landing page

Use Hugging Face when people should be able to find a model as a model, inspect its card and ML metadata, and use documented Hub download workflows. Model repositories inherit general repository capabilities while also supporting model-specific information. Hugging Face Models documentation and Hugging Face model downloads describe these workflows.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pick GitHub for code-first projects or bounded artifacts

GitHub is a sensible fit when the model is closely tied to a software project and the same repository or release workflow is where users expect to find its code, documentation, tags, and release notes. For binary distribution, a tagged release can include assets and release notes. GitHub describes releases as deployable software iterations made available for download and use.

Use both when code and model distribution have different audiences

A practical split is to keep training or application code, issues, and project documentation on GitHub while publishing checkpoints and their model-specific page on Hugging Face. Link the two project pages so a user can move between implementation and weights. This avoids making one repository do two jobs poorly, while preserving a clear relationship between a model and the software that uses it.

Check file sizes and delivery method before uploading

GitHub has distinct paths for ordinary repository files, Git LFS objects, and release assets. Their limits are not interchangeable. The following figures are limits in GitHub documentation consulted on October 3, 2026, not performance benchmarks; verify current documentation and your plan before publishing.

GitHub path or guidance Documented figure What it means
Regular Git repository files Warning above 50 MiB; files above 100 MiB are blocked. Do not commit large checkpoint files as ordinary Git blobs. GitHub large-file documentation
Browser upload 25 MiB per file; command-line regular Git can upload up to 100 MiB. Browser upload has a lower ceiling than command-line Git; the latter still cannot exceed the regular-Git file cap. GitHub file upload documentation
Git LFS maximum file size 2 GB on Free and Pro; 4 GB on Team; 5 GB on Enterprise Cloud. The per-file maximum depends on plan. Git LFS stores the large object separately while Git history contains a pointer. GitHub Git LFS documentation
GitHub Release asset Each asset must be under 2 GiB. The cited documentation states no total release size or bandwidth usage limit; that does not remove the per-asset ceiling. GitHub Releases documentation
Repository size guidance Ideally under 1 GB; under 5 GB is strongly recommended. This is repository size guidance, not a per-file upload allowance. GitHub large-file documentation

For Hugging Face, consult its upload guidance for the current supported workflow and repository behavior rather than assuming that a model file can be handled like an ordinary small source file. Hugging Face model uploads

Understand what users actually download

GitHub repository files and LFS objects

When a checkpoint is tracked with Git LFS, the repository contains a pointer rather than the file contents. A user or downstream system needs to fetch the LFS object to obtain the actual weights.

GitHub source archives

GitHub repository archives do not include Git LFS objects by default: they contain pointer files unless a repository administrator enables LFS objects in archives. Do not tell users that downloading a repository ZIP necessarily downloads the model weights; explain the correct clone or asset-download route. GitHub documentation on LFS objects in archives

Hugging Face downloads and network restrictions

Hugging Face model downloads may use storage or CDN hosts beyond the main website. If users work behind a restricted network, test whether those download hosts are reachable and give them a supported client or download path. Hugging Face model downloads

Decide whether you need gated access

Hugging Face documents gated model repositories, where users authenticate to request or download access; authors can require approval and can collect identifying details. That is useful when weights should not be anonymously downloadable, but it adds a user access step. Hugging Face gated models documentation

GitHub repository visibility and permissions can restrict a repository, but the cited materials do not establish a matching per-user model request-and-approval flow. Choose based on whether the requirement is simply restricting project access or managing access requests for a published model.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose Hugging Face if model discovery, model cards, ML metadata, integrations, or a documented gated-download flow are central.
  • Choose GitHub if code collaboration is the main job and the artifact fits a supported Git LFS or release workflow.
  • Choose both if contributors need a conventional code repository but model users need a model-focused listing and download experience.
  • Before uploading, record each checkpoint’s exact size, select the storage route, confirm account or plan limits, and test a clean download as a user would.
  • Before announcing a download, test whether a repository archive includes the actual weights, whether access requires authentication, and whether the user’s network can reach the delivery hosts.
