How to Choose a Gaming PC or Console for Open-World Games

Choose around the open-world games you intend to play, then compare platform support, PC requirements, display goals, total cost and setup preferences.

Choose the platform that supports the open-world games you want to play, then match it to your budget, display and preferred balance of resolution, frame rate and graphics quality. Check each game’s current platform listing first: availability is title-specific, and PC requirements vary by game and settings.

Should you buy a gaming PC or console for open-world games?

Start with the games, not a generic platform ranking. Make a short list of titles you expect to play and confirm each one supports the platform and generation you are considering. For example, the official New World: Aeternum listing names PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and notes that PC specifications may evolve. That example does not establish availability for other games.

A console gives you a standardized hardware target and typically asks less of you in component selection and configuration. A PC lets you choose hardware and adjust settings, but you need to compare the actual components with the games’ requirements and may need to spend more time configuring them. These are practical differences, not a claim that either platform is universally faster or better value.

What PC specs do you need for open-world games?

There is no single specification that guarantees good performance across open-world games. Compare the CPU, GPU, memory, operating system and storage as a complete configuration, against the requirements and performance target for each game. Also account for the resolution, frame rate and graphics settings you want: a machine that meets a low-settings target may not meet a higher-resolution or smoother-play target.

Use published game targets as anchors

PlayStation’s official God of War Ragnarök PC requirements give a concrete example. Its minimum tier targets an average of 1080p at 30 fps on low settings and lists an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 5500 XT, Intel i5-4670K or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10 64-bit and a 190 GB SSD. Its recommended tier targets an average of 1080p at 60 fps on medium settings and lists an NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super or AMD RX 5700, Intel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and 16 GB RAM. These are targets and components for this game, not universal open-world PC requirements.

Expect multiple tiers and settings options

The Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition PC announcement lists four tiers—minimum, recommended, high and very high—and describes presets intended to scale across a range of hardware. That is why a single label such as “gaming PC” is not enough to judge a purchase: check the exact configuration and the tier that matches your expectations.

Assess the whole configuration

Compare the graphics card and processor together, along with RAM, operating system and storage. A mismatch between the PC’s components and the game’s requirements can undermine the target you care about; a large GPU name alone does not tell you whether the system meets all requirements. Check available storage as well as capacity: a game may require a specific drive type or substantial free space.

HP’s 2026 gaming PC hardware guide recommends at least 16 GB DDR5 RAM, a well-matched CPU and GPU, and a fast NVMe SSD; it suggests 1 TB NVMe for a larger library. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee for a particular title or independent performance testing. The game’s own requirements take priority.

Is a console easier for open-world gaming?

It can be easier to choose because console hardware is standardized, rather than assembled from many possible PC configurations. But confirm that the game supports the exact console generation and edition you plan to buy; a title’s availability on one console does not prove that it runs on another generation. On PC, the added choice of components and graphics settings can be useful if you want control, but it puts more responsibility on you to check compatibility and tune performance.

What should you compare before buying?

  1. Your game list: Check the publisher’s current platform page for every priority title, including the specific console generation or PC storefront.
  2. Your display goal: Decide whether you prioritize resolution, smoother frame rates or higher graphics settings. Use each game’s published performance targets as anchors rather than assuming one target applies to all games.
  3. The PC’s exact parts, if applicable: Compare CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system and storage with the requirements for your games. Assess the configuration as a whole, not just the product name or one component.
  4. Total cost in your region: Compare current local listings for the system you would actually buy. Add a display or extra storage only if you need them, and account for the games you plan to play; prices and stock depend on location and time.
  5. Library and storage: Consider which platform supports your games and how much room you need for the titles you intend to keep installed.
  6. Flexibility and setup: Decide whether component choice and configurable settings are worth the extra setup for you, or whether you prefer a standardized console experience.

Why requirements cannot be generalized across open-world games

Requirements are tied to the specific game and use case. Xbox Wire’s July 22, 2026 article about PC requirements for Xbox backward-compatible titles, for example, gives a minimum of 8 GB RAM and 4 GB video memory and a recommended 16 GB RAM and 8 GB video memory for those named titles. Those figures describe that backward-compatibility use case, not every open-world game. Always use the current requirements for the title you want rather than treating figures from another game—or a manufacturer’s broad hardware advice—as a universal buying rule.

Because regional pricing, stock and particular PC configurations change, compare current listings where you live before choosing. Without a matched set of current prices and configurations, there is no reliable basis here for naming a best-value PC or console.
