The right Podman alternative depends on what you need to run and manage. For application containers on one host, consider nerdctl with containerd; for unreliable IoT connections and supported remote-update workflows, investigate balenaEngine. Choose Incus or systemd-nspawn when you need full Linux system containers, and K3s when you need Kubernetes orchestration across an edge fleet. None is established as the lowest-memory option by comparable idle-RAM benchmarks.
Which Podman alternative fits your edge deployment?
These five tools work at different layers, so they are not interchangeable drop-in replacements. Some manage application containers; others manage complete Linux environments or coordinate workloads across machines. A 512 MB router and a 4 GB mini PC also have very different capacity constraints, so a universal “lightest” ranking would be misleading.

| Option | What it manages | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| nerdctl with containerd | Application containers | A single host where you want a Docker-compatible CLI and containerd features | Requires configuring and maintaining the containerd stack; some rootless features depend on host support |
| balenaEngine | Application containers | IoT deployments where supported remote-update workflows and difficult network conditions matter | Update behavior depends on the deployment path; verify release, architecture, and maintenance status |
| Incus | Full Linux containers and virtual machines | Complete system environments, API-driven management, or growth from one host to a cluster | Its broader management layer may be unnecessary for isolated application processes |
| systemd-nspawn | Full Linux system containers | A minimal system-container workflow on a host already managed with systemd | Not an OCI CLI equivalent; fleet management is less convenient than with Incus |
| K3s | Kubernetes application workloads | Orchestration across edge nodes, including constrained or intermittently connected environments | More operational complexity than a single-device container engine; validate control-plane capacity |
The table describes intended roles, not measured resource use. No comparable idle-memory figures or workload benchmarks are established for these options, so test them on the target board and operating system before choosing based on capacity.
When should you choose nerdctl with containerd?
Choose nerdctl if you want a familiar Docker-compatible command-line interface while using containerd. The nerdctl project documents Compose support and rootless use, and positions the CLI as a way to expose containerd features rather than as a direct attempt to replace Docker.

Some capabilities are optional rather than enabled automatically. The project documents lazy-pulling options through snapshotters such as Stargz, Nydus, OverlayBD, and SOCI, along with image encryption and IPFS-based distribution. Whether these are useful depends on your image-delivery and storage setup.
Check rootless and resource-control dependencies
Rootless operation does not remove host prerequisites. nerdctl’s documented rootless resource-limit flags, including nerdctl run --memory, require systemd and cgroup v2. Overlay filesystem support also depends on the host and kernel; some setups may need FUSE-OverlayFS or a compatible native snapshotter configuration. Confirm these requirements against the project’s current documentation and your distribution before deployment.
This makes nerdctl a practical candidate for operators comfortable assembling a lower-level containerd stack. It does not establish that nerdctl uses less memory than Podman or the other choices.

When is balenaEngine a better fit?
Consider balenaEngine for IoT application containers when the update path matters as much as the local runtime. A recent technical comparison describes it as a Moby-based, Docker-compatible engine aimed at IoT devices, with failure-resistant image pulls. It also describes binary delta updates in supported balenaCloud deployments.
Do not assume every standalone image pull receives delta updates: the cited delta-update behavior is tied to supported balenaCloud workflows. Before standardizing, verify the current standalone release separately from the engine bundled with balenaOS, check your device architecture, and confirm that the release still receives security updates. The available comparison does not establish an installation procedure or comparable memory measurements.
When do Incus or systemd-nspawn make sense?
Use a system-container tool when the workload needs a complete Linux userspace, rather than just an isolated application process. These options differ in how much management infrastructure they provide.

Incus: manage systems, containers, and VMs
Choose Incus when you need to manage full Linux systems in containers or virtual machines, use distro images, or want a REST API and a path from one machine to a cluster. Its official documentation describes this unified management role. That breadth is useful for system environments, but may be more machinery than an edge device needs to run a few application containers.
A configured memory limit for an Incus container is a limit on that container, not evidence of the memory required by Incus itself. Do not treat an example limit as a runtime footprint.
systemd-nspawn: use the systemd environment already on the host
Choose systemd-nspawn when the host already uses systemd and you want a relatively direct workflow for building and starting a minimal OS container with systemd tooling such as machinectl. The comparison describes configuring limits through systemd properties such as MemoryMax.

systemd-nspawn is a system-container approach, not an OCI command-line equivalent. It can suit a small number of machines or containers, but the comparison identifies fleet management as less convenient than Incus. Confirm the details for your distribution and systemd version in current documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When does K3s justify its extra complexity?
Choose K3s when the problem is coordinating workloads across nodes, not merely running containers on one edge server. K3s is a Kubernetes distribution packaged with its Kubernetes components, container-runtime support, and networking components; its official site describes use in edge, IoT, air-gapped, and ARM single-board-computer deployments. It uses SQLite as its default datastore.
K3s’s “Lightweight Kubernetes” description and its explanation of being “half the size in terms of memory footprint” describe the project’s design rationale, not an independent comparative benchmark or a guaranteed memory requirement. A single-node installation can still add orchestration overhead that a lone device does not need. For a low-resource cluster, assess the control-plane/server separately from worker/agent nodes and test the actual workloads.

Keep Kubernetes cgroup configuration consistent
Kubernetes documentation says the kubelet and container runtime must use the same cgroup driver. On a systemd host, Kubernetes recommends the systemd driver, particularly with cgroup v2; mismatched cgroup management can cause instability under resource pressure. For K3s, follow the current instructions for the exact K3s release and operating system rather than assuming a generic Kubernetes setting applies unchanged.
How to check whether an option will fit a low-resource host
Do not choose from a generic minimum-RAM number: the available sources do not establish one that applies across these tools, architectures, and workloads. Measure on the device, distribution, and configuration you intend to deploy.
Quick Recap
- Confirm host compatibility. Check CPU architecture, kernel, distribution, init system, cgroup version, storage driver or snapshotter support, and rootless requirements against current project documentation.
- Record the idle baseline. Measure memory use after the host and candidate runtime are settled, before starting the application. Keep the OS and background services consistent when comparing options.
- Run a representative workload. Test the actual image, concurrency, storage use, and traffic pattern. Record peak memory as well as idle use; the idle figure alone does not show whether the application will fit.
- Test resource limits and failure behavior. Containers have no resource constraints by default in Docker’s resource-control documentation; that is a general container-host warning, not a claim about these five tools. Apply suitable limits and test what happens when memory is exhausted, since an out-of-memory event can affect host processes.
- Test the edge conditions. Pull images over the connection the device will actually use, interrupt connectivity, restart the service or device, and verify that storage growth and recovery behavior are acceptable.
- For K3s, test the cluster role. Validate server/control-plane capacity separately from agent/worker capacity, and check cgroup-driver alignment before relying on the deployment under memory pressure.
Which one should you use?
- Pick nerdctl with containerd for application containers and a Docker-compatible CLI when you are prepared to manage containerd and meet its host dependencies.
- Investigate balenaEngine when IoT update resilience is central and your deployment qualifies for the supported update workflow.
- Pick Incus for API-managed full Linux environments, containers, and VMs, especially if you may expand to a cluster.
- Pick systemd-nspawn for a modest system-container setup on a systemd host without needing a broad fleet-management layer.
- Pick K3s when multiple nodes and Kubernetes orchestration are requirements, and only after validating server and worker capacity on your hardware.
