Use JPEG for photographs when some image information can be discarded, PNG when you need lossless pixel preservation or dependable transparency, and WebP when its lossy or lossless options suit your web workflow. The best choice depends on the image, export settings, and the tools that must open, edit, or publish it—not just the extension.
PNG vs JPEG vs WebP at a glance
| Format | Best starting point | Compression and transparency |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Logos, interface graphics, or other images that need crisp edges and exact pixel preservation | Lossless raster format with alpha transparency, as described by the W3C PNG Third Edition specification and MDN’s image-format guide. |
| JPEG | Photographs when lossy compression is acceptable | Lossy compression; do not rely on JPEG for transparent graphics. See MDN’s image-format guide. |
| WebP | Web delivery when the destination supports the format and its required features | Offers lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and support for animation and optional metadata and color profiles. See Google’s WebP overview and container specification. |
When should you use PNG?
Choose PNG when preserving the image’s pixel values matters, or when a graphic needs an alpha channel for transparent areas. That makes it a sensible starting point for logos, interface elements, and graphics with precise edges. PNG is specified as a lossless format for static and animated raster images.

Lossless preservation does not mean PNG will always produce the smallest file. If file size matters, export a WebP version when the full publishing path supports it, then compare the result and check that transparency and edges remain correct.

When should you use JPEG?
Choose JPEG for photographs when lossy compression is acceptable. Its practical advantage is that you can trade some image information for a smaller delivery file; the result depends on the source and encoding settings. Inspect the exported image at its intended display size before publishing.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
JPEG is not the natural choice for a graphic that needs transparent pixels. For those assets, start with PNG or test WebP if the tools that will handle the file support its transparency.
When is WebP a good choice?
WebP provides both lossy and lossless compression, supports transparency, and can carry animation, metadata, and ICC color profiles. Those options make it worth considering for web delivery, but the benefits depend on the image and the encoder settings. Google provides cwebp and dwebp conversion tools in its WebP overview.

Google reports that lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNG and lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. These are Google-reported comparisons, not a guarantee for every asset or export. In a 2011 announcement, Google separately reported a 45% average size reduction for lossless WebP starting from PNGs found on the web, and a 25–34% compression improvement over JPEG at equivalent SSIM index. That dated benchmark is not a universal result; see Google’s November 18, 2011 announcement.

How to choose and check an export
- Identify what the image must preserve. If exact pixels or transparent areas are essential, start with PNG or a WebP export whose alpha handling is supported by your workflow. If the image is a photograph and lossy encoding is acceptable, compare JPEG with lossy WebP.
- Export for the destination. Use the required compression mode and quality settings, and confirm that the intended browser, editor, CMS, and downstream tools handle the format and features you need. Browser support alone does not establish compatibility across every application or publishing pipeline.
- Compare the actual files. Check file size and inspect visual quality at the final display size. For graphics with transparency, verify the alpha channel and edges after conversion.
- Keep a suitable master. Retain an editable source or lossless master when future edits or exact preservation matter, and create a delivery export for the destination.
Google’s WebP overview lists major browser support and conversion tools, but support can change and does not guarantee that every editing application, CMS, or downstream service will handle WebP features identically. Test the actual publishing path when compatibility is important.

Google describes WebP as “a modern image format that offers superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web, resulting in smaller and richer images.” That is Google’s characterization of its format, not an independent guarantee about a specific export. File size and visible quality still depend on the input image, encoder, and settings.
