There is no studio-set level requirement. Prepare by upgrading Kratos as you progress, then learn each opponent’s attack tells and use the response that fits the move—not a single dodge-or-attack routine.
Spoilers: This guide names Sigrun as the final Valkyrie encounter.

All Valkyrie locations: a broad region checklist
The following region list identifies the areas associated with the eight optional fights and the Queen’s arena. It is a checklist, not a turn-by-turn route: the available walkthrough source does not establish every chamber entrance or access condition. Check your in-game map and the surrounding area for the actual route.

The region order comes from a walkthrough checklist, not a claim that fights must be completed in that order. Santa Monica Studio’s combat designer Denny Yeh said the first eight can be fought in any order; the team had a rough progression based on location accessibility, with earlier fights introducing mechanics used later. How to prepare without chasing a supposed required level
The studio does not specify a universal level threshold, required armor set, or mandatory loadout for these fights. Upgrade Kratos and his equipment as you play, and begin when you feel ready for a demanding optional encounter. One walkthrough creator recommends level 6–7, but that is a nonbinding recommendation, not an official requirement or a guarantee of success. HarryNinetyFour walkthrough description, April 25, 2018.
- Expect to learn before you win. These are challenging fights built around recognizing attacks and answering them. Yeh described the encounters as difficult but fair: “Every single thing the Valkyrie can do has an answer.” That describes the design intent; it does not mean a fight will be easy or that every Valkyrie uses the same moves. - Choose a response deliberately. Keep your attention on the opponent’s tell, rather than attacking automatically whenever there is a pause.
- Account for the arena as well as the boss. Hildr’s Niflheim fight is affected by the poison-mist timer and the route you must repeat after dying.
Counter the move you see
Yeh’s examples illustrate why reading the attack matters: a scythe strike can be parried, an airborne attack can be interrupted by throwing the axe, and a stomp attempt can be avoided by dodging three times. These are examples of move-specific answers, not universal counters for every Valkyrie. PlayStation Blog, February 1, 2019.

- Identify the tell. Watch for the cue that precedes the attack. If the same move keeps catching you, stop pressing forward long enough to see what signals it.
- Match the response to the move. Parry the scythe attack when its timing allows; throw the axe at the airborne attack; dodge repeated times when facing the stomp attempt.
- Resume offense after the response. Avoid turning a successful defense into a prolonged exchange of guesses. The practical lesson from the studio’s description is to learn one tell and its answer at a time.
Choosing what to fight next
A sensible learning route is to take the encounters in a rough progression of accessibility and mechanical complexity, while remembering that the first eight are not locked to a required order. The studio describes Gunnr as a comparatively simple introduction: her damaging attacks use the scythe, and well-timed parries or dodges can answer them. This makes her a useful place to practice reading a tell and choosing a defense before moving on to more demanding fights. PlayStation Blog, February 1, 2019.

When deciding between available fights, consider three things: how accessible the encounter is from your current progress, how complex its moves feel, and whether the arena adds pressure beyond the opponent. The Niflheim fight against Hildr is the clearest special case: poison mist creates a time limit, and dying means repeating part of the route. The studio says it kept her fight less complex with those constraints in mind, but the arena still makes preparation and retries matter. PlayStation Blog, February 1, 2019.

When to take on Sigrun
Sigrun at the Council of the Valkyries is the culminating encounter after the eight other fights. By the time you reach her, use the same learning method that helps elsewhere: watch the tell, identify the move, and test the fitting response instead of assuming that a counter that worked on one Valkyrie will work identically on another. The studio’s rough progression makes the earlier encounters useful practice, not a mandatory sequence.
