Start with the trip, not the watch’s headline battery number
Smartwatch-mode runtime is not the same as runtime while recording a hike with GPS. Compare the manufacturer’s estimate for the intended GPS mode, display setting, and features you expect to keep enabled. Allow reserve beyond the planned activity: published figures are estimates, not guarantees for your conditions.

Garmin publishes separate estimates for GPS-only, all-satellite, and multi-band modes, and notes that enabled features affect battery life. For the Instinct 3 AMOLED 45 mm, Garmin lists up to 18 days in smartwatch mode with wrist gesture, up to 7 days with always-on display, and up to 23 hours using all satellite systems plus multi-band under typical-use assumptions with SatIQ. It also lists up to 32 hours GPS-only and up to 25 hours with all satellite systems. These are manufacturer figures for that configuration, not a like-for-like comparison with other watches. Garmin Instinct 3 AMOLED specifications and Garmin’s battery-mode details give the model-specific conditions.

Solar charging claims need the same scrutiny. Garmin’s Instinct 3 Solar 45 mm manual estimates up to 28 days of smartwatch use in typical use, or unlimited smartwatch use with solar under the stated assumption of all-day wear and three hours outdoors per day at 50,000 lux. For GPS-only, it lists up to 40 hours typical use or up to 130 hours with solar under the stated outdoor-light assumption. Those assumptions are part of the claim; sunlight, wear, and activity setup determine whether they apply. Garmin’s Instinct 3 Solar battery information explains the estimates.

Other manufacturers present different use categories. Suunto lists up to 65 hours of training time in the Vertical 2’s most accurate GPS mode and up to 20 days of smartwatch use. Apple lists up to 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode for Apple Watch Ultra 3. Neither figure should be read as a direct comparison to another maker’s GPS test: the stated modes and conditions differ. See Suunto Vertical 2 specifications and Apple Watch Ultra 3 technical specifications.
Decide what navigation means for you
A compass, a return track, a saved route, and an offline map solve different problems. Choose the least complex set that still supports how you hike; do not assume that a watch with GPS necessarily has the maps or route guidance you need.

- Routes, waypoints, and offline maps: More useful when you plan to follow a route or need map context without a connection. Apple lists custom waypoints and offline maps; Suunto documents downloadable offline maps for Vertical 2. Check coverage and storage behavior for the actual destination.
Prepare maps and routes before leaving coverage
Offline features are only useful if the relevant data is on the watch and ready before the trip. Suunto’s Vertical 2 guide says selected maps need to be downloaded to the watch in advance through the app and a wireless setup. Before departure, confirm the destination map area, saved route, and waypoints are present and usable with the phone disconnected. Suunto Vertical 2 User Guide.
Do not make a smartwatch your only navigation method. Carry a suitable independent backup, such as a map and compass or another navigation device appropriate to the route, and know how to use it.

Assess durability as a combination of specifications and fit
“Rugged” is not one standardized measure. Check the water rating, case and bezel materials, lens, size, weight, and physical controls. Consider whether the watch is comfortable under sleeves or pack straps and usable with the gloves you expect to wear. A larger or brighter display is not automatically better if it compromises fit or endurance.
Garmin lists a 10 ATM water rating, a metal-reinforced bezel, and a scratch-resistant display for the cited Instinct 3 AMOLED 45 mm. Those specifications do not establish how it compares with another model in impact or scratch performance. The same Garmin page identifies hiking as an outdoor recreation profile and lists a built-in flashlight. Garmin Instinct 3 AMOLED.

Check phone compatibility and emergency-service dependencies
Before buying, establish which functions work without a phone, which require a compatible paired phone, and which require a network or paid service. For example, Garmin says notifications require a compatible paired phone for the cited Instinct model. Its Instinct material also describes pairing with a separately sold inReach device for messaging and SOS, with an active satellite subscription required. That is a watch-plus-communicator arrangement, not a claim that the watch alone can summon help. Verify the exact model, destination-region availability, and service terms. Compare examples by the features you need
| Model example | Relevant hiking and camping features | Published battery figures | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin Instinct 3 AMOLED 45 mm | 10 ATM rating, metal-reinforced bezel, scratch-resistant display, multi-band GPS, ABC sensors, hiking profile, built-in flashlight | Up to 18 days smartwatch mode with wrist gesture; up to 7 days always-on display; up to 23 hours all-satellite plus multi-band with SatIQ under typical-use assumptions | Battery mode and enabled features; phone requirements for notifications |
| Suunto Vertical 2 | Dual-band GPS and downloadable offline maps | Up to 65 hours training time in the most accurate GPS mode; up to 20 days smartwatch use | Download selected maps before departure and check route and destination coverage |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Hiking waypoints, Backtrack GPS data, offline maps, and satellite connectivity for specified features | Up to 42 hours normal use; up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode | Feature availability and service requirements for your location and phone setup |
Specifications above come from the manufacturers’ current product and help pages; publication years for the individual figures are not stated. Garmin announced the Instinct 3 range on January 6, 2025, but that announcement date should not be treated as the publication date of every current specification. These examples are not a controlled head-to-head test of GPS accuracy, battery runtime, impact resistance, or sensor accuracy, so they do not establish a universal winner.
Use this buying checklist
- Write down your longest likely trip and the hours you expect to record activity.
- Compare active-GPS estimates in the modes you plan to use, including screen settings and enabled features; include a practical reserve.
- Choose the navigation level you need: compass, track-back, route and waypoint support, or offline maps.
- Confirm that destination maps and routes can be stored on the watch and are available offline.
- Check water rating, materials, size, weight, display, and controls against your conditions and fit.
- Confirm phone compatibility and identify any separate hardware, subscription, or regional limits attached to emergency features.
- Carry and know how to use an independent navigation backup.
Suunto’s Vertical 2 User Guide puts the battery caveat plainly: “Do not entirely rely on the GPS or battery lifetime of the product.” Treat that as a sensible reminder for trip planning, not as a substitute for checking a watch’s specific modes and preparing backups. Suunto Vertical 2 User Guide.
