Plenty of Content Ideas, Almost Nothing Published: Where the Workflow Breaks

Having plenty of content ideas and almost nothing published usually points to a workflow bottleneck, not a lack of creativity. Here is where it breaks and a routine to try.

If you have a notebook full of content ideas and very little on the site, the bottleneck is probably not a shortage of ideas. Publishing is a chain of separate jobs: capturing an idea, choosing one, developing it, and getting it out on schedule. Stalls can happen at any link in that chain. Recent studies point to two places where friction is well documented, selection and portfolio management, while also showing that capture deserves its own system. No study has measured how common this pattern is among content creators, so treat what follows as a map of likely bottlenecks rather than a diagnosis of any one person.

Four jobs that look like one

Most people experience “I can’t publish” as a single problem. Separating it into stages makes it easier to see which stage is failing.

Stage What it requires Where the evidence points to friction Source
Capture Getting an idea out of your head and into a place you trust Practitioners across several creative fields use deliberate tools to capture ideas, and the choice of tool matters to how they work Rosselli Del Turco and colleagues, IT University of Copenhagen, 2025
Selection Choosing one idea from many People keep more lower-quality ideas when choosing among their own than among someone else’s Kim and Newman, arXiv, 2026
Portfolio management Deciding which ideas wait while others move forward A stockpile of ideas can outgrow available time and resources, and letting go of personally meaningful ideas is emotionally hard Ananth and Harvey, Administrative Science Quarterly, 2023
Development and timing Turning the chosen idea into a finished piece on a schedule Delay can coincide with better creative output under some conditions and with lower task efficiency Shin and Grant, Academy of Management Journal, published online 2021

Selection: why your own ideas are hard to cut

The clearest evidence for a selection bottleneck comes from a 2026 experimental paper by Jin Kim and George E. Newman, “Creators Have Difficulty Abandoning Ideas They Generated.” The authors report that participants submitted more lower-quality ideas when selecting among their own ideas than when selecting among another person’s ideas. In the abstract’s words, “people submit a greater number of lower-quality ideas when selecting among their own ideas than when selecting among another person’s ideas.” The authors call the pattern the “Creative Endowment Effect.” It is a finding from their experiments, not a universal law, and it describes how choices were made in a study, not how any particular creator behaves.

The same paper reports that revisiting ideas several months later increased selectivity. That is a reason to try a scheduled review, not a proven publishing method. The study does not establish a best interval, and months are not presented as an ideal cadence. Read the arXiv abstract before building a process around its details.

Portfolio overflow and letting go

Ananth and Harvey’s 2023 study in Administrative Science Quarterly, “Ideas in the Space Between: Stockpiling and Processes for Managing Ideas in Developing a Creative Portfolio,” describes creators who coordinate ideas with project opportunities. They manage limits on time and other resources, and they stockpile ideas that are not yet ready. The study also describes the emotional difficulty of abandoning ideas that feel personally meaningful.

For a content creator, this means a backlog is not a neutral warehouse. Every idea you keep active competes for the same hours as the one you are supposed to finish this week. A backlog that is never pruned can turn into a list of unfinished commitments, which may explain why having many ideas can feel like having nothing ready. The full article is the place to check how the authors frame stockpiling.

Capture is its own practice

A 2025 peer-reviewed study by Rosselli Del Turco, Inie, Hollan, and Dalsgaard, “How Creative Practitioners Use Tools to Capture Ideas: A Cross-Domain Study,” surveyed about 200 creative practitioners and interviewed about 60 across interaction design, research, music, and graphics. It examined how ideas are externalized and how practitioners choose capture tools. These are the sample sizes of that study. They describe the people who took part and are not estimates of how many creators work this way.

The practical implication, which is our reading rather than a finding the authors state as a recommendation, is that ideas spread across phone notes, sticky notes, chat threads, and memory are hard to review together. If you cannot see all your ideas at once, you cannot compare them. Choose one capture place and use it for everything. The study record describes the tool-choice findings in more detail.

Incubation or drift?

Delay is not automatically a flaw. Shin and Grant’s study, “When Putting Work Off Pays Off: The Curvilinear Relationship between Procrastination and Creativity,” reports a conditional, inverted-U relationship between procrastination and creativity. In other words, moderate procrastination was associated with more creativity than either very little or a great deal, under particular conditions. The same work also reports lower task efficiency with procrastination. The authors drew on two experiments in the United States and a field study with Korean employees, and the study concerns employees working on creativity tasks. Its summary does not supply an effect size, so no precise magnitude should be assumed. Do not read it as permission to delay publication indefinitely. The abstract is the best starting point.

The difference between incubation and drift is whether the delay has an end point. Incubation means you have a review date and a question to answer when you return. Drift means the idea has no date, no status, and no next step.

A selection routine to try

The steps below are a practical suggestion built from the studies above. None of those studies tested this exact sequence, so treat it as a starting experiment and adjust it to your publishing schedule.

  1. Put every idea in one inbox. Use a single place, whether a notes app, a spreadsheet, or a paper notebook. For each idea, write one line describing the idea and one line describing the reader it serves.
  2. Pick one idea for the next publishing slot. Use a short, explicit test. For example: can I finish this idea in the time I actually have, and does it answer a question my audience is already asking? Choose the idea that passes, not the one you feel most attached to.
  3. Give every other idea a status. Mark it either “parked,” with a review date, or “discarded.” Discarding is not failure; it frees the portfolio.
  4. Set the review date now. Place a calendar reminder for a few months out to revisit parked ideas. Ask whether the idea still matches your audience and whether you would still choose it over the current pick.
  5. Record the next concrete step for the chosen idea. An outline, a draft deadline, or a publish date. An idea with no next step is still in the inbox, regardless of how often you think about it.

What the evidence does not show

  • No study located for this article estimates how many content creators have plenty of ideas but publish infrequently.
  • None of the cited studies compares apps, notebooks, or editorial calendars, so none shows that a particular tool increases publishing.
  • The samples are specific: the selection experiments, the portfolio study’s creators, the four-field capture survey, and the employee procrastination work each cover a defined group, not all content creators.
  • The causes differ from person to person. A stalled workflow may come from selection, capacity, capture, or simply competing priorities, and the routine above will not fix every one of them.

If the routine helps you ship one piece, repeat it for the next one and see which step is still where things stall.
