csperf: A Lightweight Observatory for Honest Performance Tracking

csperf is presented as a lightweight way to inspect local compiler-performance context, discover host-visible backends, and save machine details alongside measurements.

csperf is described as a small command-line observatory for compiler-performance work: it can help inspect the local environment, discover backends visible on the current host, and save machine details that give later measurements context. The documented workflow is a community tutorial, not official project documentation, so treat its commands and outputs as instructions reported by that author—not as independently verified current behavior.

What csperf is meant to help with

Performance results are difficult to interpret without knowing the environment in which they were collected. The tutorial presents csperf as a way to gather that context before benchmarking. Its described functions are complementary: diagnose the environment, list locally discoverable backends, and record a machine snapshot.

That makes it a supporting tool, not a substitute for a CI pipeline or a guarantee that a benchmark is valid. The tutorial does not establish that csperf controls machine state, removes measurement noise, ensures results from different machines are comparable, or makes a benchmark reproducible.

How the tutorial’s first-command workflow works

The tutorial recommends starting with help, then checking backend discovery and running the environment diagnostic. It says the latter commands produce text artifacts, which can be kept with benchmark results as context.

What each artifact can and cannot tell you

doctor: a local sanity check

The tutorial describes csperf doctor as a check of the current environment and identifies csperf/doctor.txt as its output. This can provide diagnostic context, but the source does not establish that passing the check validates a benchmark or guarantees a stable test environment.

list-backends: what the host exposes

csperf list-backends is presented as a view of backends available to the tool on that host. It should not be read as a complete list of every backend that exists or could be supported elsewhere: the result is local discovery, not an exhaustive catalogue.

machine.txt: context for a measurement

The tutorial describes csperf/machine.txt as a machine snapshot that can accompany results. Preserving it helps others see reported host details when reviewing measurements. A snapshot alone does not show that two runs were conducted under equivalent conditions or that their results are directly comparable.

How to read the tutorial’s example machine snapshot

The tutorial author reports this lab-host snapshot: 16 logical CPUs, 8 cores, 2 threads per core, one socket, frequency boost enabled, CPU scaling at 74%, a maximum reported frequency of 5582.3008 MHz, and a minimum reported frequency of 605.3100 MHz. These are values from that author’s example host, not csperf specifications, independent measurements, or expected values for another computer.

In practice, retain the machine snapshot alongside the benchmark rather than treating any single figure as a quality score. CPU frequency and scaling information are contextual details; the tutorial does not show that csperf sets or stabilizes them.

Where csperf fits in a benchmark workflow

Use the described commands to gather local context before a benchmark and retain their output with the result. The tutorial explicitly cautions that csperf is a tool, not a replacement for a complete CI pipeline. It does not document a full benchmarking methodology or claim that these artifacts establish validity. For reliable comparisons, interpret measurements with the relevant test setup and conditions in view rather than relying on a backend list or machine snapshot alone.
