Use a locator and a retrying web-first assertion to establish that the relevant heading, result, image, or other state is ready, then take the screenshot. Playwright discourages using networkidle for tests because network quiet does not prove that the intended content is ready.
Choose the wait that matches the screenshot
A screenshot should capture a meaningful application state. If the image needs to show a search result, for example, wait for the result list; if it needs to show a completed dashboard, wait for the dashboard’s loaded state. The locator and expected condition depend on the application—there is no universal selector that can establish readiness for every page.

| Approach | Use it when | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Locator plus web-first assertion | The screenshot must show a specific element or application state. | The selected content satisfies the assertion; Playwright retries the assertion while the page updates. It does not require unrelated background traffic to stop. |
networkidle |
Network quiet itself is relevant to the task. | No network connections for at least 500 ms. This does not establish that a particular component is ready, and Playwright marks this state discouraged for testing. |
toHaveScreenshot() |
You are writing a visual comparison test with Playwright Test. | Playwright waits until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last screenshot with the expectation. |
Wait for the target content in a normal screenshot
Use a locator that identifies the content the screenshot is meant to show, then assert its intended state before capturing. Locators are central to Playwright’s auto-waiting and retry-ability. Choose a role, text, label, placeholder, alt text, title, or test ID locator when it identifies the target reliably.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures the loaded results', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/search');
const results = page.getByRole('list', { name: 'Search results' });
await expect(results).toBeVisible();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'results.png' });
});
Replace the example URL, accessible name, and assertion with the application’s real target and expected state. Visibility may be enough for a static element, but dynamic interfaces often need a more specific condition—for example, a result count, expected text, or a loading indicator becoming hidden. Assert the state the screenshot is supposed to represent, rather than merely the existence of a container.

When to use networkidle
Navigation APIs such as page.goto() accept load, domcontentloaded, networkidle, and commit as waitUntil values. Playwright defines networkidle as no network connections for at least 500 ms and labels it discouraged for tests. The Page API says: “Don’t use this method for testing, rely on web assertions to assess readiness instead.” Playwright Page API.
Network quiescence can be the wrong signal in either direction: a page may keep analytics, polling, or other background requests open after its visible content is ready, while a brief quiet period does not prove that the content you need has appeared. Use this state only when the absence of network connections is itself the condition you need—not as a general proxy for application readiness.

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
This is valid API usage, but for a test that must capture a particular component, add an assertion for that component instead of treating the navigation state as proof of readiness.
Why waitForLoadState() may not help
page.waitForLoadState() waits for a requested load state after navigation has been committed. If that state has already occurred, it resolves immediately. Playwright says it is usually unnecessary because the framework auto-waits before actions. Its completion does not assert that a specific application component or text is ready. See the Page API documentation.

For example, waiting for domcontentloaded can establish that the document reached that browser lifecycle state; it cannot by itself establish that a client-rendered result list has populated. Pair navigation with an assertion for the application state that matters.
For visual regression, use toHaveScreenshot()
When the purpose is to compare a screenshot with a baseline in Playwright Test, use its screenshot assertion rather than adding an arbitrary fixed delay. expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots yield the same result, then compares the last capture against the expectation. It is a Playwright Test feature, not a general method for producing any screenshot.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('matches the page screenshot', async ({ page }) => {

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('example.png');
});
The locator assertion establishes that the intended page content is present; the screenshot assertion handles visual stability and baseline comparison. Keep the environment aligned with the one that produced the baseline: operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Playwright recommends using the same environment for comparisons. See its visual comparisons guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- The test hangs at
networkidle. Persistent connections or recurring background requests may prevent the quiet interval. Wait for the target locator and assert the intended state instead. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete after navigation resolves. A navigation load state is not proof that a client-rendered component is ready. Add a locator assertion for the content to capture.
- The screenshot includes a loading state. Assert the completed state, such as the result text appearing or the loading indicator becoming hidden, before taking the image.
- A screenshot assertion differs from the baseline on another machine. Rendering environment differences can change the image. Run the comparison in the baseline environment, including its browser version and relevant settings.
waitForLoadState()returns immediately. The requested state may already have occurred. That behavior is expected; it still does not verify application-specific content.
