Sony’s official PS4 and PS5 support pages cover console internet setup and Remote Play networking. They do not describe a native VPN app for either console, and they do not show that a VPN makes a connection faster, lowers latency, or improves Remote Play. If you want a VPN on a PlayStation, the realistic route is a VPN-capable router, and whether that works depends on the exact router, its firmware, your VPN provider and your internet service provider. This guide starts with what you are trying to achieve, then checks the console’s ordinary network settings, then measures the connection, and only then covers the conditional VPN route.
Start with the outcome you need
“Use a VPN” covers three different goals, and each one is solved differently. Mixing them up is the most common reason people spend money on the wrong thing.

| What you want | What helps, according to Sony’s guidance | What a VPN does for it |
|---|---|---|
| Stable online play | A wired Ethernet connection, enough upload and download speed, and less competing traffic on your network. Sony describes Ethernet as the fastest and most reliable way to connect a PlayStation to a home network. | Nothing documented. Sony’s materials do not show a VPN improving latency, matchmaking or gameplay. |
| Remote Play working | Remote Play enabled in console settings, a wired connection where possible, at least 5 Mbps upload and download, UDP port 8572 not blocked, and a NAT type that is not Type 3. | Nothing documented. Adding a VPN adds another route for the same traffic and can change the path, so it is not a fix in the reviewed sources. |
| Routing the whole console through a VPN | Not covered by Sony’s console setup pages. This needs a router that can act as a VPN client. | This is the only case where a VPN is the actual tool. Feasibility depends on your hardware and provider. |
Check the console’s ordinary network setup first
Sony’s English setup guide for PlayStation consoles, How to set up an internet connection on PlayStation consoles, documents both wired and wireless setup for PS4 and PS5. Start with the path that matches your home network.
Wired setup on PS5
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the console’s LAN port to your router.
- Go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose Set Up Wired LAN, then select Connect.
Wired setup on PS4
- Connect the Ethernet cable to the console and to your router.
- Go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose Use a LAN Cable, then select Easy.
Wi-Fi setup is also documented in the same guide. Use it only when a cable is not practical, and read the Wi-Fi section below before you rely on it for Remote Play.

IPv6 and IPv4
PS5 supports IPv6 but not IPv6-only connections. If your router or ISP is configured for IPv6 only, the console will need IPv4 enabled as well. Ask your ISP to confirm this before changing anything on the console.
Advanced settings: change them only with a reason
The advanced settings on PS5 and the custom settings on PS4 include IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU and proxy. Sony advises users who are unfamiliar with these fields to ask their ISP or network administrator. Changing DNS is not a substitute for a VPN, and altering MTU or proxy values without a specific diagnosis tends to create new problems.

Wired or Wi-Fi
Sony describes Ethernet as a fast and reliable connection with lower latency than Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi can work well, but signal strength, walls and other devices all affect the result. Sony’s Remote Play guidance recommends a wired connection for stability. When a Remote Play client is on Wi-Fi, Sony suggests trying a 5 GHz network.
Measure the connection before changing it
Sony publishes the only concrete thresholds in its official material, and they apply to Remote Play. They are guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play.

| Requirement | Value | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum upload speed for Remote Play | 5 Mbps | Sony’s Remote Play troubleshooting guidance, How to troubleshoot Remote Play connection issues, accessed October 2026. |
| Minimum download speed for Remote Play | 5 Mbps | Same Sony guidance. Sony describes this as the minimum, not an assurance of quality. |
| Recommended speed for best performance | At least 15 Mbps upload and download | Same Sony guidance, stated as a recommendation for best performance. |
Test at both ends. Your console’s connection matters for Remote Play, and so does the device you are streaming to, because both must upload and download at these rates. Other people streaming video or downloading large files on the same network will reduce what is available, so run the test while the network is otherwise quiet.
Route the whole console through a VPN: what to verify
A router-level VPN is a plausible approach, but only if the router is capable of it. Sony’s console documentation does not verify any router or VPN provider, so treat the following as a checklist to complete yourself.
Rank #4
- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
- Client mode: The router must be able to connect to a VPN service as a client. A router that only hosts a VPN server for you to connect to, or only passes a VPN through, does not do the job.
- Protocol and firmware: Confirm the protocol your provider uses is supported by the router’s current firmware.
- Throughput: Encryption uses the router’s processing power. Check the router’s rated VPN throughput against your plan’s speed, then measure it after setup.
- Provider instructions: Use your VPN provider’s current instructions for that exact router model. Do not follow instructions written for a different model or firmware version.
- Your ISP’s rules: Confirm your internet contract allows the setup you intend.
Decision framework
- If your router cannot act as a VPN client, a router-level VPN is not available on that hardware. Changing the console settings will not add the feature.
- If your router can act as a client but Remote Play or gaming becomes less stable after setup, measure the connection with the VPN on and off. The reviewed sources do not show the VPN as a performance benefit.
- If your goal is simply stable online play or Remote Play, start with the wired connection and the speed test. Those steps address the problems Sony documents.
Troubleshoot Remote Play step by step
Sony’s troubleshooting sequence starts with the basics. Work through it in order before changing router settings.
- Confirm the console is online and updated. Remote Play depends on a working internet connection and current system software.
- Enable Remote Play in the console settings. On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play. On PS4, go to Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings. Sony’s settings page is How to change Remote Play settings.
- Sign in with the same account on the console and the client.
- Set the PS4 as your primary console. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance includes activating the PS4 as primary.
- Check that the game or feature supports Remote Play. Sony notes that some games and features do not support it.
- Check the connection. Use a wired connection where possible, meet the speed figures above, and reduce competing traffic on the network.
- Check the port and NAT type. Remote Play uses UDP port 8572. Sony’s Remote Play-specific page says port forwarding may help if the port is blocked, and it warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent connections. Sony’s wording is “Remote Play uses UDP Port 8572 to connect to your console or mobile device.” If you are unsure how to open a port on your router, contact your ISP or router manufacturer rather than following a port list from an unverified source. The Remote Play page is at When Remote Play isn’t available.
Hardware: where an Ethernet cable fits
A standard Ethernet cable is the simplest supported improvement for the link between the console and your router. Sony’s guidance states: “An Ethernet cable is the fastest and most reliable way to connect your PlayStation to your home network.” It is the right accessory for wired play and Remote Play. It will not fix a slow internet plan, a congested Wi-Fi network elsewhere in the house, or a poor route to a distant server. A VPN-capable router is a separate, conditional purchase, and only worth buying after the checklist above confirms it fits your provider.

What the official sources do not establish
- No authoritative test in the reviewed sources compares PlayStation latency or gameplay with and without a VPN.
- No verified list of VPN providers or routers works with PS4 or PS5.
- Sony’s reviewed materials do not say that a VPN changes the country linked to a PlayStation account, unlocks any store catalogue, or affects service terms. Account-region rules are set by the service and vary by jurisdiction, so check the current terms for your account.
- The speed figures are Sony’s guidance for Remote Play. They are not independent benchmarks, and the reviewed sources do not name an individual study behind them.
The practical sequence is the same whatever you decide: confirm the ordinary connection, measure it, fix the cable or Wi-Fi, then decide whether a VPN-capable router is worth the effort for your specific goal.
