To pair a Fitbit, set it up in the Google Health app on your phone, not from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Google’s current help pages say to use your phone to set up your Fitbit device, and they direct you to add the device inside the app. The steps below follow that path, then move through fixes in a safe order, starting with checks that change nothing on your account or device.
Before you pair your Fitbit
Confirm three things before you start. Google’s Google Health app setup requirements currently list Android 11 or higher and iOS 16.4 or higher, and a Google Account is required. Meeting the minimum version does not guarantee success: Google notes that some listed phone models can have compatibility problems even when they meet the baseline. If your phone is an older model near the minimum, check the requirements page for your exact model before you spend time troubleshooting.

Next, charge the Fitbit with the charger that came with it. Google’s setup instructions call for connecting the Fitbit to its charger before setup, so do this even if the battery looks full. If the included cable is missing or damaged, check the correct charging cable for your Fitbit model. Cables are not interchangeable across models, so do not assume a cable designed for one Fitbit will fit another.

Fitbit won’t connect? Try these fixes
Work through these in order and retry setup after each step. The early steps change nothing on your account, so stop as soon as the Fitbit connects.
- Check the basics. Confirm the Fitbit is charged, Google Health and your phone’s operating system are up to date, and Bluetooth is on.
- Check Android settings. On Android, confirm the phone supports the app, turn off Power Saving Mode, and make sure Location Services are on with location permission granted to Google Health. Power-saving and permission settings are a common cause of failed setup on Android even when Bluetooth is working.
- Reset Bluetooth on the phone. Turn phone Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on, and retry setup.
- Restart both devices. Restart the Fitbit and the phone, then retry.
- Check the single-device rule. Google’s current instructions say only one Fitbit device or Pixel Watch can be connected to an account at a time. The documented exception is the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch pairing. If your account already has another device connected, remove that connection before adding the new one.
- Remove the old pairing and set up again. Only do this if the steps above fail. Details are in the next section.
When to remove an old pairing
Remove an old pairing when the Fitbit still fails after the checks above, or when you are starting a clean re-setup on a phone that remembers an earlier device. Removing the connection has two parts, and both are needed.

After both removals, reopen Google Health and set up the device from the beginning using the steps above.

If setup still fails, reinstalling the app is the next option. Before you do that, confirm your phone’s operating system is still supported, because reinstalling does not fix an unsupported phone. If the problem continues after these steps, contact Google or Fitbit support and tell them which fixes you have already tried, including the phone model, operating system version, and whether the device was already linked to an account.

Avoid a factory reset unless support recommends it
A factory reset is not a normal pairing step. Google describes device recovery and factory reset as a last resort for unresponsive devices, boot loops, or update failures that persist. A reset erases local activity statistics that have not synced, plus alarms, goals, and notification settings. Before you consider one, sync what you can, and read the reset instructions for your exact model. Those instructions differ between Fitbit models, so the steps for one device may not apply to another.
Pairing problems are almost always solved by the checks and pairing steps earlier in this guide, so a reset should not come before them.
