Choose PlayStation Portal if you want a dedicated PS5 streaming device with controls built in. Choose a phone and controller if you already have compatible hardware, want to connect to a PS4 as well as a PS5, or may need Remote Play over mobile data. Neither setup is proven to be universally faster or better-looking; the quality you get depends on your network.
How the two setups work
PlayStation Portal streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5 over Wi-Fi. It is a remote player, not a standalone console: your PS5 needs a broadband connection and must be powered on or in Rest Mode. Its controls are built into the handheld device. With a phone, you install the PS Remote Play app and connect to a compatible PS4 or PS5. You can use supported controller hardware or on-screen controls. Sony lists Android phones and tablets, and iPhone and iPad, among the supported mobile devices; setup also requires a PlayStation account, compatible console, and high-speed connection. Pick Portal for a dedicated handheld
Portal combines the screen and controls in one device, so you do not need to mount a phone or pair a separate controller for the basic setup. It makes sense if you have a PS5 and want a device reserved for streaming games from it. It does not remove the need for the console or a suitable network.

Pick a phone if you value flexibility
A phone is the practical option if you already have a compatible handset and controller, or if you want to connect to a PS4 as well as a PS5. You can also use mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable, though that can consume a significant amount of data. Touch controls are an option, but a controller may be preferable for games that benefit from physical inputs.
What internet speed do you need?
PlayStation’s official guidance for both Portal and PS Remote Play is a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps and a recommendation of at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. The reviewed official pages do not state when those figures were published. They are guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play: Sony notes that network conditions affect quality. If play stutters or the image degrades, check the connection at both the console and the device before assuming a particular upgrade will help. The published speed figures alone do not identify whether a problem comes from the home network, the internet connection, or the connection used by the receiving device.
Check game and controller compatibility
Games that may not work
Neither setup supports every game. PlayStation says Portal cannot play games that require PS VR or PS VR2, certain additional peripherals, or streaming on PS5 through PS Plus Premium. Remote Play on a phone also has game and accessory requirements; check the game’s needs before choosing either setup. Portal’s haptics and adaptive triggers work only in games that support them.

Phone controllers and operating systems
Sony lists DualSense support for iPhone and iPad running iOS 14.5 or later, Android phones and tablets running Android 12 or later, Mac 11.3 or later via Bluetooth, and Windows via USB. DUALSHOCK 4 support is listed for a wider range of older platforms. Sony also lists Backbone One-PlayStation Edition compatibility for phones running iOS 15 or later and Android 10 or later. These requirements are a starting point, not a guarantee for every handset or regional accessory edition. Verify Sony’s current platform notes and the phone maker’s specifications before buying or relying on a particular combination.
