First check which version of BlazBlue: Central Fiction you and your opponent own: local play is available offline, but online modes and cross-play rules vary by platform. Steam’s online modes have rollback netcode; the Switch version offers ranked matches and player rooms but has no online lobby or cross-platform play; and PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 can play together, with a restriction on direct invitations.
Set up local multiplayer
Local multiplayer means two people playing offline on the same system. The exact controller setup depends on your platform.

Nintendo Switch
The Switch edition supports one to two offline players. Nintendo says multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player; the Pro Controller and REAL ARCADE Pro.V HAYABUSA for Nintendo Switch are supported options, not requirements. Connect or pair a compatible controller for each player, launch the game, and choose offline versus play. Arc System Works’ Switch page lists the supported controllers and player counts.
Steam on PC
A Steam Community controller guide updated in December 2024 describes the game as using controller slots 1 and 2. It recommends enabling Steam Input for the game and arranging the intended devices in those slots through Steam Overlay controller settings. This is community guidance, not an official Arc System Works manual.

- Connect both controllers, arcade sticks, or button boxes before launching the game.
- If the devices do not control separate players, open the game’s Steam Library controller settings and enable Steam Input.
- Open the overlay. In desktop mode, press Shift+Tab and choose the controller icon; in Big Picture or Steam Deck mode, open controller settings with the controller or Home button.
- Reorder the intended devices into controller slots 1 and 2, return to the game, and enter versus mode. The device that opens the title screen navigates the game menus.
The guide advises against running other input-mapping software alongside Steam Input because it can confuse controller handling. It does not establish that every keyboard-plus-controller arrangement works, so treat that combination as setup-dependent. Read the Steam Community controller guide.
PlayStation
Use the game’s offline versus mode after pairing the controllers with the console. The official PlayStation information cited here covers online modes and cross-play, but does not document a model-specific local controller setup or exact menu sequence.

Play online by platform
Steam
Start the game’s online or network mode and follow the displayed menu labels to choose matchmaking or a player match. Arc System Works’ March 7, 2022 announcement says rollback netcode was implemented for all online modes and notes online changes including rematch options for Player Match and other matchmaking modes. The announcement does not establish present-day player numbers or service availability. See the Steam update announcement.
Nintendo Switch: ranked matches
Nintendo UK says online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. The publisher describes the Switch version as supporting two to eight online players in Network Mode; Nintendo’s listing phrases its online-player count differently, so these figures are not directly interchangeable. The Switch edition has no online lobby and does not support cross-platform play. Arc System Works’ Switch page and Nintendo UK’s game listing describe the platform’s features and online requirement.

- Enter Ranked Match. Set search criteria such as area, player level, or match completion rate if desired, then begin searching.
- You can wait while playing other game modes. When an opponent is found, their name appears at the lower right.
- Press + to open the pause menu and begin the match. Use that menu to stop or pause ranked-match entry.

Nintendo Switch: play with friends in Player Match
Choose Player Match to create or enter a room, then select a room type. The manual describes sessions for up to eight players and these formats:
- Match/spectate: two players fight while other room members watch.
- Free-for-all: room members battle simultaneously, without spectators.
- Training: two players train while others watch. Only player one can use the training menu and reset commands.
- Replay theater and team battle: additional room options listed in the manual.
Switch players cannot use these rooms to play against people on other platforms. Consult the Switch manual for Player Match controls and room details.

PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4
Arc System Works says the PS3 and PS4 versions can play against each other. PS4 online play requires PS Plus. Player Match invitations work only between players using the same console model. To play with a friend across PS3 and PS4, use Player Match search rather than sending an invitation. The cited sources do not provide comparable latency tests, current player-population figures, or a live check of matchmaking service availability. They therefore do not support ranking these versions by connection quality or the likelihood of finding an opponent.
