Choose PlayStation Portal if you want a dedicated handheld with an 8-inch screen and built-in DualSense-style controls. Choose a phone and controller if you already own a compatible phone, want to reuse it, or need the option to stream from either a PS5 or PS4. Portal also has a separate advantage: PlayStation Plus Premium members can cloud-stream selected games on it without connecting to a PS5. Neither setup is proven to be universally faster or sharper; Sony publishes no controlled head-to-head performance comparison.
How the two setups differ
Both options can stream gameplay from a console over a network. The Portal is a dedicated PS5 Remote Play device; Sony’s phone app supports Remote Play from PS5 and PS4 consoles. Neither device runs console games locally through ordinary Remote Play.

| Screen and controls | Built-in 8-inch 1080p LCD and integrated DualSense-style controls. Haptics and adaptive triggers work in supported games. | Uses the phone’s screen. Controls can be touch-based, a compatible paired controller, or a phone-mounted controller; screen size and physical fit depend on the phone and accessory. |
| Connection options | Wi-Fi. | Wi-Fi or mobile data, subject to network conditions and your carrier plan. |
| Cloud streaming | Selected PS5 games can stream with PlayStation Plus Premium, subject to regional and game eligibility. | Sony’s official phone Remote Play documentation describes streaming from a PS5 or PS4 console; it does not document equivalent Portal cloud-streaming support in the phone app. |

Choose Portal for a dedicated handheld experience
The Portal puts its 8-inch LCD and controls in one device, so there is no phone to mount, separate controller to pair, or phone display to work around. Sony lists 1080p resolution and gameplay up to 60fps. Its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are available in games that support those features. See Sony’s Portal listing for the hardware specifications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIt is still a streaming device, not a standalone PS5. For ordinary Remote Play, compatible games need to be installed on a paired PS5, and the console supplies the gameplay. Portal is the more straightforward choice if you want controls and screen designed as a single handheld unit and do not want to use your phone for play.

Audio options listed by Sony include a 3.5 mm jack and PlayStation Link wireless devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. Sony’s product information does not establish ordinary Bluetooth audio support, so check the connection type of any headset you plan to use. Details are on the Portal product page.
Choose a phone and controller for flexibility and reuse
A phone setup makes sense if you already have a compatible device and would rather not buy a dedicated handheld. Sony’s mobile app can connect to a PS5 or PS4, and the phone remains available for its usual tasks when you are not playing. You can use on-screen controls, a supported Bluetooth controller, or a compatible phone-mounted controller such as Backbone One – PlayStation Edition.
Touch controls can work for supported play, but physical controls are generally the practical choice for games that rely on precise buttons and sticks. With a mounted controller, check the exact phone model, connector, operating system, and accessory revision: physical fit and compatibility are not guaranteed just because the app runs on the phone.

Sony’s current US compatibility guidance lists these minimum operating-system versions:
| Phone setup | Minimum OS listed by Sony |
|---|---|
| iPhone/iPad with DUALSHOCK 4 or touch controls | iOS 14 or later |
| iPhone/iPad with DualSense | iOS 14.5 or later |

| Android with DUALSHOCK 4 | Android 10 or later |
| Android with DualSense | Android 12 or later |
| Android with Backbone One – PlayStation Edition | Android 10 or later |
These are Sony’s listed OS requirements, not a guarantee that every phone, controller revision, or physical configuration will work. Sony’s Remote Play overview gives the mobile compatibility details. Backbone says Sony’s Android compatibility list currently recognizes only Backbone One – PlayStation Edition for official PS Remote Play; consult its compatibility FAQ and verify your specific setup before buying.
Consider Portal cloud streaming if your PS5 is unavailable
Portal has a capability beyond console-to-handheld Remote Play. Since November 5, 2025, PlayStation Plus Premium members have been able to cloud-stream selected digital PS5 games from their library and hundreds of compatible catalog games on Portal without connecting to a PS5 via Remote Play. The eligible catalog and library games depend on region, country, and availability, and not every game qualifies. Sony announced the feature and its eligibility terms in its cloud-streaming launch post.

This distinction matters if you want to play when your PS5 is off, unavailable, or being used by another account: eligible Portal cloud streaming does not rely on that console. It is an optional Premium benefit, not a requirement for ordinary Remote Play from your own PS5. Sony’s announcement also makes clear that Remote Play remains available without a Premium membership.

For console Remote Play, the phone and console must use the same PlayStation account. Enable Remote Play on the console before trying to connect; if you want to wake a PS5 from Rest Mode, configure the relevant network and Rest Mode settings as well. Sony recommends confirming that the phone connects successfully while near the console before attempting to play away from home. Follow Sony’s PS Remote Play mobile instructions or its mobile support guide for the setup steps.
Sony says Remote Play needs a connection of at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those are minimum and recommended guidance, not a promise of smooth play. Sony says quality varies with network conditions; home upload capacity, Wi-Fi signal and congestion, distance, cellular coverage, and device behavior can all affect an individual session. There is no cited controlled test showing that Portal or a phone consistently has lower latency or better image quality. See Sony’s Remote Play network guidance.

- Beautiful 8” LCD Screen - Take in every exquisite detail of your favorite games as they come alive on a brightly lit and gorgeous full HD screen.
For phone play over cellular, check your carrier’s data allowance first. Sony warns, “Remote Play uses a lot more data than most video streaming services,” and says mobile use can exceed data caps or incur charges. Portal relies on Wi-Fi, so it does not provide the same mobile-data option.
Which one should you buy or use?
- Pick Portal if you want a dedicated handheld, a larger built-in screen, integrated DualSense-style controls, or Portal cloud streaming for eligible games with Premium.
- Use a phone and controller if you already own compatible hardware, want to avoid another dedicated device, need PS4 as well as PS5 Remote Play, or value the option of cellular connectivity.
- Check compatibility before choosing a phone accessory: confirm the OS, controller support, connector, and physical fit for your exact phone.
- Test your network before judging either setup: the recommended connection speed alone cannot guarantee a good session, and neither option has a published universal latency advantage.
If you are deciding between buying Portal and reusing a phone, the central trade-off is dedicated comfort and Portal-only cloud streaming versus flexibility and reuse. A phone is not a substitute for Portal’s documented cloud-streaming feature, while Portal is not the only way to play remotely from a PS5.
