A PS5 DualSense takes about 3 hours to recharge, while a PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 takes about 2 hours from empty, according to Sony. These are approximate, model-specific estimates—not a guaranteed time for every battery or charging setup.

Sony describes both times as approximate, and its sources do not establish that the two estimates were measured under identical conditions. Your starting charge, battery condition, and charging setup can affect how long a recharge takes; Sony does not quantify those differences.

How to charge the controller
PS5 DualSense
Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB Type-C cable, or use the separately sold DualSense Charging Station. The station can charge up to two controllers at once. The DualSense station is designed for DualSense controllers; it is not the DUALSHOCK 4 station.

PS4 DUALSHOCK 4
Connect the controller to the PS4 using its USB cable. Sony says it can charge while the console is on or in rest mode. Use a DUALSHOCK 4-compatible charging station if you prefer a dock; Sony documents a separate station for this controller generation.

Charging from another USB device
Sony says a controller may also be connected to a computer or another USB device with a compliant USB cable, but some devices may not charge it. Sony does not give a universal charge-time estimate for these alternatives.
Charging in rest mode: check the USB power setting
A controller can charge while its console is in rest mode only if the console supplies power to its USB ports. The setting name and available choices vary by console model.

Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. Sony’s current guidance lists Always or 3 Hours; the newer CFI-2000 model group also offers Adaptive, which adjusts charging based on the connected controller’s remaining charge. If USB power is unavailable, connect the controller while the console is on or use another supported charging method.

In the PS4 rest-mode settings, enable Supply Power to USB Ports. If you choose the three-hour option, the console supplies USB power for three hours after entering rest mode. Sony’s charging options guidance describes USB power settings for both console generations.

How to tell whether it is charging
- DualSense on its charging station: the light bar slowly blinks orange while charging and turns off when the controller is full.
- DUALSHOCK 4: the battery icon blinks while the controller is charging.
Indicator behavior depends on the controller and charging method. For example, the DualSense light-bar description above is for the charging station.

- Confirm that the USB cable is connected securely to the controller and a powered source.
- If the console is in rest mode, check that Supply Power to USB Ports is enabled and that the selected duration has not elapsed.
- Try a supported charging connection. Sony notes that some computers and other USB devices may not charge a controller.
- Check the controller’s indicator for charging progress. If it still does not charge as expected, use the troubleshooting guidance for your model: DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4.
Sony says DUALSHOCK 4 battery life varies with use and the environment in which the controller is used and stored. Its published charge-time estimates do not specify how battery age changes recharge duration.
