If your Fitbit Versa 2 has a black screen, first seat it correctly in its Versa 2 charging cradle, connect the charger to a wall outlet, and leave it there for an hour. A fully depleted watch may stay dark for several minutes. Then check the charging contacts and, with the watch still connected, hold its side button for 10 seconds until the Fitbit logo appears. This restart does not erase your data.
1. Charge the Versa 2 for a full hour
Use the Versa 2 charging cradle: align its pins with the gold contacts on the back of the watch, then connect it to a standard wall outlet. For a completely black screen, Google recommends using a wall outlet rather than a computer. Leave the watch charging for 60 minutes before deciding it has not responded. If its battery is fully depleted, the screen may remain black for several minutes after you connect it.

Make sure the cradle is seated and its pins meet the watch contacts. The Versa 2 charger is model-specific; Google says its cable does not work with the original Versa or Versa Lite.
2. Check and clean the charging contacts
Look for dirt on the gold contacts on the watch and the pins in the cradle. Gently press each charger pin with a finger: it should spring back immediately. A pin that remains pushed in or feels stuck may mean the cable needs replacement.

Google’s screen troubleshooting guidance recommends cleaning the watch contacts with a toothbrush and fresh water, then drying them with a cloth or tissue. It advises cleaning the charger pins carefully with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, making sure no cotton remains. Its charging guidance also recommends a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol for the contacts and pins; for stubborn buildup on the watch’s gold dots, it suggests a pencil eraser, followed by clearing away any eraser debris.
Do not scrape the contacts with metal. Google warns that this can damage their plating and lead to corrosion. If the charger is missing or a pin is stuck, look for a replacement cable that specifically names Versa 2 compatibility; a new cable is not a diagnosis or a guarantee that the watch will power on.

3. Restart the watch while it is charging
- Keep the Versa 2 connected to its charger.
- Press and hold the watch’s single physical side button for 10 seconds.
- Release the button when the Fitbit logo appears.
This is the Versa 2 procedure in the model’s manual and Google’s restart guidance. A restart reboots the watch without deleting its data. Do not insert anything into the watch’s small holes while trying to restart it; the manual warns that doing so can cause damage.
4. Don’t confuse a restart with a factory reset
A restart is the data-preserving button hold above. A factory reset is different: Google says it erases device data and should be a last resort. For a black screen, start with charging, contact checks and the restart rather than attempting a reset.

5. Contact Fitbit support if it remains unresponsive
If the watch still will not respond after charging, safe cleaning and the restart, contact Google/Fitbit Customer Support. For a persistent blank-screen problem, Google advises having the Fitbit model and serial number ready. These steps cannot establish whether a particular watch has a failed battery, charger, display or another hardware fault.

Google’s battery guidance lists the Versa 2 in a group estimated at 6+ days under the conditions described by that guidance; actual battery life varies with settings and use. With always-on display enabled, Google estimates up to 3 days. These are usage estimates, not a way to diagnose a black screen or determine whether a watch is charging.
