New Balance says its slip-resistant outsoles are tested according to ASTM F2913-19 for traction on a variety of surface conditions. That is the manufacturer’s statement about its work-shoe collection—not independent comparative testing or a guarantee on every outdoor surface. The available information does not establish that the MX608v5 is waterproof, insulated, or appropriate for a particular terrain or weather condition.

Start with the work, not the product name. Consider the surfaces you actually walk on, the conditions they become wet or slick in, and any job-specific hazards. New Balance’s work-shoe category also describes electrostatic-dissipative features and composite toe caps meeting ASTM F2412-18a and ASTM F2413-18 requirements. Those category descriptions do not show that the MX608v5 has either feature.

- For safety-toe, electrostatic-dissipative, or other required protection, confirm the precise specification with your employer and the product listing.
- Check whether the shoe’s stated features suit your terrain and weather; the cited materials do not establish waterproofing, insulation, or performance on a specific outdoor surface.
If workplace compliance matters, follow your employer’s PPE specification rather than treating a general work-shoe category claim as approval for your job.
Get the width and fit right
New Balance says it offers widths from X-Narrow to XX-Wide. Pressure at the sides or across the top of the foot can indicate that a wider fit may be needed; too much space at the sides can point toward a narrower width. Use the brand’s fit guidance or get an in-person fitting if you are unsure.

Clean and inspect shoes regularly
For athletic shoes, New Balance recommends mild, dye-free detergent and a bristle brush. Wipe with a damp cloth and leave the shoes to air-dry for 24 hours. Replace shoes when the soles are excessively worn or flat, the materials have holes or tears, or wearing them causes new soreness or fatigue during activities that used to feel comfortable. New Balance says shoe life varies with factors such as activity, body weight, surfaces, and storage; its care guidance does not give a universal mileage lifespan for work shoes.
