How are the PlayStation App and PSN different?
Think of the PlayStation App as a mobile interface and PSN as the online services it can connect to. Sony describes PSN as an online service connecting players and providing access to PlayStation services. Its app offers selected social, Store and console features. They are related, but neither term is another name for the other.

Sony’s account sign-in guidance and PlayStation App feature guide describe the account and app functions. In Sony’s PS4 quick-start guide, PSN is described as “an online service that lets you expand your enjoyment of your PS4 system.”

Do you need a PlayStation account or paid subscription?
Sony says to sign in to the app with a PlayStation account. The account is also used to access parts of the wider PlayStation ecosystem, including the Store and online features. An account and a paid subscription are not the same thing: Sony’s Australia and New Zealand PSN terms say account creation is free, while some PSN services are charged. Those terms are regional; check the terms for your country for local details.

PlayStation Store is the digital storefront, while PlayStation Plus is a separately named subscription offering. Neither is a synonym for the app or PSN, and the requirements depend on the particular service or content. See Sony’s PlayStation Network information for the ecosystem and account context.
What can you do with the PlayStation App?
The app brings selected PlayStation functions to a phone. Some work through the account and internet connection; others also require a paired console, compatible setup or eligible content.

- Message and chat: Send text, stickers, voice recordings and images, or start party voice chats.
- Shop: Browse PlayStation Store and purchase games. You can then start a download to a paired console if its remote-download settings are enabled.
- Manage PS5 storage: Check and delete content remotely. Sony says the app does not support moving or copying games.
- View captures: Eligible PS5 screenshots and video clips can appear in the app when capture upload is enabled. Sony says uploaded captures are viewable for 14 days from upload; video clips must be no longer than three minutes, and other restrictions apply.
- Launch or join games: Use app notifications to launch or join supported console games when remote connection is set up.

What is required for remote downloads and storage controls?
Remote features are not controlled by the phone alone: the console must be paired with the app, online and configured to allow the relevant action.

- Remote downloads: Pair a PS4 or PS5 with the app, enable “Stay Connected to the Internet” on the console, and leave it in Rest Mode.
- PS5 storage management: The console must be in Rest Mode for remote storage features. The app can check and delete content, but cannot move or copy games.
Use Sony’s app setup instructions for the relevant console and feature.

A failed app sign-in does not by itself show that PSN is down. Check for a known service problem first, then consider account, app, internet or console-setup causes according to what is failing.

- Check service status: Visit Sony’s PlayStation status page for active online-service issues.
- Check account access: Confirm you can sign in with the PlayStation account credentials you use for other PlayStation services.
- Check the app and connection: Make sure the app is current and the phone has a working internet connection.
- Check console setup only if a remote feature is failing: Confirm the console is paired and meets the relevant Rest Mode and internet settings. A console setting will not explain every sign-in problem.
The status page can help identify service disruptions, but it cannot diagnose every account lockout, local connection issue or app error. The next steps depend on the specific error or feature that is failing.
