Choose a helmet intended for skateboarding and labeled as meeting ASTM F1492. Then check the specific model’s documentation, measure the wearer’s head against that brand’s sizing chart, and try the helmet on. It should sit correctly, feel snug without painful pressure, allow clear forward and side vision, and stay stable with its straps adjusted.

Which safety standard should a skateboard helmet meet?

For skateboarding, look for a helmet labeled as meeting ASTM F1492, the specification for helmets used in skateboarding and trick roller skating. ASTM lists F1492-25 as active and last updated October 28, 2025. Check the helmet’s own label and manufacturer documentation: a generic product-page description is not a substitute for a model-specific claim.

ASTM says a claim of compliance covers all requirements of the specification; partial compliance is not permitted. Its public listing summarizes the specification but does not provide the full standard text, so do not assume its detailed tests are identical to bicycle-helmet tests.

Skateboard and bicycle claims are not interchangeable

In the United States, a helmet marketed exclusively for skateboarding is outside the CPSC’s bicycle-helmet requirements. A helmet marketed for bicycling—or promoted in a way that would lead a reasonable consumer to understand bicycling as an intended use—may be treated as a bicycle helmet. For a multipurpose helmet, check the stated activities and applicable requirements rather than assuming one standard covers every use. See the CPSC Bicycle Helmets Business Guidance.

The CPSC’s Which Helmet for Which Activity? chart recommends a skateboard helmet for skateboarding, longboarding, and aggressive or trick roller and inline skating. It cites ASTM F1492 and Snell N-94 for those activities. Its note says helmets meeting the cited multi-impact standards are designed for more than one moderate impact, but protection is limited to a number of impacts: replace a visibly damaged helmet and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

How to measure and fit the helmet

Helmet sizes differ between brands, so use head measurement to choose a starting size—not as a replacement for trying the helmet on. The CDC’s Skateboard Helmet Fact Sheet recommends measuring around the head just above the eyebrows and ears, with the tape level, then checking the specific brand’s sizing chart.

  • A Helmet for Multi-Sport: Smooth Ventilation System helps to protect and enjoy skating, cycling, BMX, MTB and etc
  • Double Adjustment: Well-attached & long-lasting adjustment dial and skin-friendly adjustable chin strap maximize the best fit and comfortable wearing
  • How to Measure A Proper Helmet: To find the right size bike helmet, start by measuring your head circumference, wrap a flexible tape measure around the largest portion of your head about one inch above your eyebrows. Or, wrap a string around your head, then measure the length of string with a yardstick. Size Large is recommended if your size is between 21.3-22.8 inch (54 cm-58 cm). The recommended Age Grading: 5 Years and Older
  1. Measure and choose a chart size. Bring the intended wearer to the shop if possible. Measure around the head above the eyebrows and ears, keeping the tape level front to back; compare the result with that manufacturer’s chart.
  2. Try the helmet with the usual hairstyle. Hair can change the fit. It should feel snug all around, without gaps between the padding and head or painful tightness that could cause a headache.
  3. Check position, coverage, and sightlines. The helmet should not sit too high or too low. The front rim should align with the eyebrows, the back should not touch the top of the neck, and the wearer should be able to see forward and from side to side.
  4. Adjust the straps. Position the side straps in a V below and slightly in front of each ear. Center and fasten the chin strap so one or two fingers fit beneath it.
  5. Test stability. Ask the wearer to open their mouth wide; the helmet should pull down. With the strap fastened, check that it does not shift back to front or side to side. Readjust if it moves. If it cannot be both stable and comfortable, try a different size or shape.

What to compare when choosing between helmets

What to check What to look for
Activity and standard Explicit skateboard use and a traceable ASTM F1492 claim. For a multipurpose helmet, review all stated intended activities and applicable requirements.
Size and shape A size range that includes the wearer’s measured head circumference, followed by an in-person fit check where possible.
Adjustment Pads or adjustment systems that allow a snug, stable fit without painful pressure.
Coverage and vision A correct position that provides intended coverage without blocking forward or peripheral vision.
Straps and stability Adjustable side straps that can form the correct V, a centered buckle, and a helmet that remains stable during the fit check.
Replacement directions Clear manufacturer guidance for impact, visible damage, and wear. A multi-impact description does not mean unlimited protection.

No helmet eliminates concussion risk. The CDC puts the distinction plainly: “There is no concussion-proof helmet, but a skateboard helmet can help protect your child or teen from a serious brain or head injury.”
