Can you play Planet Coaster for free temporarily?
Possibly, if an official game-specific event is offered. Steam describes a Free Weekend as a time-limited promotion that lets players temporarily access an eligible paid game for free. That general policy does not mean Planet Coaster currently has a Free Weekend. After an event ends, continued play requires buying the game.

For a legitimate temporary offer, watch the official Steam listing and publisher announcements. Do not treat an old giveaway post or a platform’s general promotion rules as evidence of an active Planet Coaster offer.

Xbox
The Xbox Store listing presents Planet Coaster: Console Edition as a purchasable game. Its note that cloud play through Game Pass requires a game purchase does not establish that the game is included with a subscription.

Redeem a purchase you already own
If you previously bought the game from FrontierStore.net, Frontier explains how to claim that existing purchase to a linked Steam account in its support instructions. This redeems an entitlement you already paid for; it is not a free offer.
Discounts can lower the price, but expired sales are not current offers
Frontier announced on July 17, 2025, that a Steam sale included Planet Coaster at up to 75% off. That announcement is historical: it gives neither a current price nor an active sale end date. Check the live official store rather than relying on an old discount post.

Do free updates or console discs provide the full game for free?
Free updates
Free updates add content for people who already own the game; they do not provide ownership of the base game. A free update or add-on is not a free copy of Planet Coaster.

A physical copy is another way to buy the game, not a free route. Frontier says owners upgrading from a physical current-generation copy need a disc-capable console and the disc to authenticate play. Check the relevant console and edition requirements before buying a used or boxed copy.

What to avoid when looking for a free download
Unofficial repacks, cracks, account-sharing schemes, and third-party pages promising a free full copy are not legitimate substitutes for an official promotion. They may also expose you to malware, stolen accounts, or lost access. Use the official publisher or platform listing to verify an offer before downloading or entering account details.
Why old sales figures do not mean the game is free
Frontier Developments reported that Planet Coaster had passed 4 million base-game units sold by April 2022. That is a historical sales milestone, not a current player count, giveaway, or indication that the game is free.
