Both Pixel Watch and Apple Watch can alert the wearer after a detected hard fall and help contact emergency services, but their documented response flows differ. Google specifies an approximately 30-second wait before the first alert and a call after a further 60 seconds without a response. Apple describes a wrist tap, alarm, and alert, with an option to start an emergency call; its reviewed guide does not state an equivalent countdown. Neither company says its watch detects every fall, and the available documentation does not establish which is more accurate.
How Pixel Watch Fall Detection works
Google says Pixel Watch uses motion sensors to detect a hard fall. About 30 seconds later, the watch vibrates, sounds an alarm, and asks whether the wearer wants to call emergency services. If there is no response, it vibrates and alarms again, then places a call after a further 60 seconds and plays an automated voice message. If location permission is granted, the watch can share the wearer’s location with emergency services. Google Pixel Watch Help

Connectivity and setup
A Wi-Fi Pixel Watch relies on a nearby paired phone connected over Bluetooth to call emergency services. An LTE model can call without the phone nearby if it has an active LTE connection; Google notes that some regions require an active LTE carrier or Safety Signal. Location sharing requires location permission.
To enable the feature, use the Safety app on the watch or the Pixel Watch app on the phone, then open Safety & emergency.

How Apple Watch Fall Detection works
When Apple Watch detects a hard fall, it taps the wearer’s wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays an alert. The wearer can tap “I’m OK” to dismiss it or drag the Emergency Call slider to call emergency services. If the call connects, the watch plays an audio message explaining that it detected a hard fall and shares the wearer’s current location as latitude and longitude coordinates. After the call, it messages emergency contacts with the wearer’s location and information that the watch detected the fall and contacted emergency services. Apple Support

Connectivity and setup
For an emergency call, Apple says the watch or a nearby iPhone needs a cellular connection or Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection. Apple’s guide also describes attempting satellite contact when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, subject to device and regional restrictions.

Pixel Watch and Apple Watch compared
| What to compare | Pixel Watch | Apple Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Initial response | About 30 seconds after a detected hard fall, the watch vibrates, sounds an alarm, and asks whether to call. | The watch taps the wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays an alert; the wearer can dismiss it or start an emergency call. |
| If there is no response | After the initial alert sequence, Google documents a call after a further 60 seconds, with an automated voice message. | The reviewed guide explains how to place a call but does not state an equivalent automatic-call countdown for an unanswered alert. |
| Location and contacts | Location can be shared with emergency services if location permission is granted. | If an emergency call connects, it shares latitude and longitude; after the call, emergency contacts receive a message with location and fall information. |
| Connection needed to call | Wi-Fi model: nearby paired phone connected by Bluetooth. LTE model: active LTE connection; some regions have additional carrier or Safety Signal conditions. | Cellular or Wi-Fi calling with internet on the watch or a nearby iPhone; satellite contact is described for specified devices and regions. |
| Documented availability detail | Google lists supported countries and languages and says the feature is temporarily unavailable in unsupported regions. | The reviewed guide does not provide a full country-by-country availability list. |
| Limits | May miss falls; high-impact activity may trigger it. | May miss falls; high-impact activity might trigger it. |
What the comparison means in practice
- Unanswered alerts: Google’s documentation gives a specific automatic-call sequence. Apple’s reviewed guide describes the wearer-initiated call flow but does not give the same timing detail for a non-response.
- Connectivity: Check how the watch will reach emergency services where it is worn. The Wi-Fi Pixel Watch depends on a nearby Bluetooth-connected phone; LTE and Apple call options have their own service, device, and regional requirements.
- Location: Pixel Watch location sharing depends on permission. Apple describes coordinates being shared during a connected emergency call and a later message to emergency contacts. These are different flows, not a promise that both watches notify people in the same way.
- Availability: For Pixel Watch, verify the country and language list, plus the model’s connectivity. For Apple Watch, check current support for the exact model and location, including any satellite restrictions.
- Detection limits: Google says, “Fall detection can’t detect all falls.” Apple says, “Apple Watch cannot detect all falls.” Either watch may also trigger during high-impact activity.
Does one watch detect falls more accurately?
The cited manufacturer documentation does not provide a head-to-head accuracy test or detection-rate statistic. The published timing describes how the products respond after a detected fall; it is not evidence that one detects falls more reliably. Choose based on the response flow, connectivity, availability, and how location and emergency contacts are handled—not an unsupported accuracy ranking.
