Add emergency contacts in the Safety app, then use Safety Check to schedule a check-in that can share your location if you don’t respond. Menus and availability vary by phone, Android version, region, permissions, and account type, so look for Safety or Safety & emergency if the labels below don’t match your device.
Before you start: find the Safety app
Google’s Personal Safety app is available on all Pixel phones and on some other Android devices. It may be called Personal Safety in the Play Store or Settings, but appear as Safety in your app list. Some features require Android 12 or later. Availability also depends on your region, location settings, permissions, and whether the account is supervised. Google’s Android Help page describes the general requirements; Google’s Pixel instructions cover Pixel-specific options.

- Open the Safety app. Sign in to a Google Account if prompted.
- Tap Your info, then Emergency contacts.
- Tap Add contact and choose someone already saved in your contacts.
You can add personal medical details under Your info as well. Emergency contacts and medical details are not automatically visible from the lock screen. If you want someone helping you—or a responder—to be able to see the configured emergency information while the phone is locked, open Emergency info access and enable Show when locked. Anyone holding the phone can then view that information without unlocking it. Google explains emergency information and access settings here.

Schedule a Safety Check
- Open the Safety app and tap Safety Check.
- Choose a reason for the check and set a duration. Google documents durations of up to 24 hours.
- Tap Next, select the emergency contacts to notify, and tap Start.
- Allow While in use location access when prompted. Safety Check requires this permission; Emergency Sharing also relies on device location services.
Contacts may receive a text when a check is scheduled if notifications are enabled. A scheduled check is not the same as continuous sharing: location sharing starts if the check-in is missed and the user does not respond to the alert.
What happens when it’s time to check in
At the scheduled time, the phone gives you 60 seconds to respond. You can mark yourself safe, start sharing, or call emergency services. If you don’t choose an option within those 60 seconds, emergency sharing begins. You can end the check or sharing from its notification.

When emergency sharing starts, contacts may receive a link to your real-time location and your remaining battery percentage. Sharing can be stopped earlier and ends automatically after 24 hours. If the phone is turned off or loses signal, the check remains active; at the scheduled time it may share the last known location rather than a current one. Google’s Android Help page describes these check-in and sharing behaviors.

If you can’t find the feature or a contact
- The app or Safety Check is missing: Personal Safety is not available on every Android phone. Google documents availability on all Pixel phones and only some other Android devices; menus can also differ by Android version.
- Location access is unavailable: Check the Safety app’s permissions and turn on device location services. Safety Check needs while-in-use location permission.
- Your account is supervised: Google says supervised users below the applicable age threshold can’t use Safety Check or Emergency Sharing. Some supervised users above that threshold have phone-only availability.
- You’re using a Pixel and want to verify the saved contact: In Contacts, select the Google Account that holds the contact and look for the Emergency contact label. You can also tap Fix & manage > Emergency contacts to open the Safety app’s list. Google Contacts Help has the Pixel instructions.
Starting a check with Google Assistant
On supported Pixel setups, Google Assistant can start a Safety Check by voice. This route has a different contact flow: an Assistant-started check does not text contacts when it starts, while Assistant-started Emergency Sharing sends information to all emergency contacts instead of letting you select recipients. For a scheduled check where you choose whom to notify, use the Safety app. Google’s Pixel Help page documents the Assistant differences.
