There is no Google-backed promise that changing Pixel settings will add a few hours of battery life. Google recommends several adjustments that can reduce power use, but the result depends on your phone, apps, signal, and usage. Start with the display, keep Google’s battery optimization features enabled, and use Battery Saver when its limits are acceptable.
Which Pixel settings are worth changing first?
Google’s battery guidance recommends lowering screen brightness, shortening screen timeout, using Dark theme, and turning off Always-on Display if you do not need it. These are optional tradeoffs, not guaranteed ways to save a fixed amount of battery. Try one change at a time so you can tell whether it helps your own routine.

- Lower brightness: A dimmer screen may be less convenient in bright surroundings.
- Shorten screen timeout: The screen turns off sooner when you stop interacting with the phone.
- Use Dark theme: Google recommends it as a battery-saving measure.
- Turn off Always-on Display: You lose glanceable information on the screen while the phone is idle.
Google’s Pixel battery-life guidance covers these changes. Exact menu names and paths may vary by Pixel model and Android version.

On supported Pixel models, Smooth Display can raise the refresh rate for compatible content. Google says the feature increases battery use, so turning it off is an option if you value runtime over the smoother motion. The available refresh-rate behavior differs among Pixel models; check your phone’s display settings rather than assuming every Pixel has the same control.

Google’s Pixel screen and display settings guide explains the feature and its model-specific availability. Disabling it can make scrolling and animation look less fluid, and Google does not specify how many hours the change will add.
Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization on
These are not settings to disable for longer battery life. Google says Adaptive Battery is on by default and learns from recent app use to limit background activity for apps you use less often. Per-app battery optimization should also remain enabled; apps exempted from optimization may run more while unused and consume more power. Some essential services do not offer an optimization control.

Google notes that after a new setup or factory reset, optimization may take a few weeks to adapt. Limiting background activity can also reduce performance or delay notifications. See Google’s Adaptive Battery and battery optimization guidance for details.

When is Battery Saver useful?
Battery Saver is intended to make a low battery last longer, but it changes how the phone behaves. It restricts background activity and can delay low-priority notifications. On supported Pixels it turns off Smooth Display, and on a compatible phone it may use 4G instead of 5G depending on the operator network. Use it when preserving charge matters more than immediate background updates or the usual display and network behavior.

Turn off tethering and check connectivity
Turn off a hotspot or tethering when no other device needs the connection; Google includes this among its battery recommendations. Google also documents Adaptive connectivity for Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Fold, but availability can depend on the phone and carrier. Some US carriers may limit the feature, so do not assume the same connectivity controls appear on every Pixel.

If battery drain remains unusual
Check which apps are using battery, and keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled. Google says extra drain for a few days after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software. If one downloaded app is responsible for poor battery life, Google recommends investigating that app rather than disabling system optimization broadly. Google’s published guidance is qualitative: it does not quantify how many hours these settings should save. A “few hours” is therefore a possible individual result, not a typical-user guarantee or a published benchmark.
