You can generate a downloadable .docx entirely in the browser, with no server and no third-party package, by assembling the required Office Open XML (OOXML) files and packaging them as a ZIP archive. That is practical for simple, text-focused documents, but it means taking responsibility for the ZIP container, XML structure, and supported features. If you only mean “no external runtime dependencies,” rather than “no package,” the docx JavaScript library offers a browser-oriented alternative.
What a browser-generated .docx actually contains
A .docx is not a text file with a Word extension. It is a ZIP archive containing XML parts that describe the document and its relationships. A valid file therefore needs both document content and the package structure that tells Word-compatible software how to interpret that content.

The docx-lite project describes a hand-built package containing parts such as [Content_Types].xml, relationship files, core properties, word/document.xml, styles, and numbering. Its documentation says it writes the ZIP container, OOXML, and deflate compression itself. These are project claims, not an independent audit or interoperability test. Choose what “no dependencies” means for your project
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-build the ZIP and OOXML package, or use a small implementation such as docx-lite | A strict ban on third-party packages, a small text-focused document, or a project that needs no build step | You own package correctness and edge cases. The docx-lite README says it cannot modify existing DOCX files and does not support images, headers, footers, page numbers, or footnotes. |
Use the docx JavaScript library |
Richer document structures and a declarative API, while still generating the output in a browser | It is a package in your project, even though its README describes it as having zero external runtime dependencies. Check how it fits your bundler and deployment requirements. |
| Use browser compression APIs and author the OOXML parts yourself | A project specifically seeking native browser primitives | Compression alone does not create a DOCX. The ZIP container and required OOXML parts still have to be assembled; the reviewed documentation does not establish a complete interoperable recipe using only native APIs. |
The official docx documentation says its API works in Node.js and browser environments, and its Packer.toBlob(file) method resolves to a Blob for browser use. Its repository README says “Zero external runtime dependencies,” but that describes the package’s runtime dependencies; it does not mean that you avoid adding the package to your project. See the docx module documentation and the docx repository README.

What a small hand-built implementation can support
According to its documentation, docx-lite supports headings, paragraphs, bold and italic text, links, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, and page breaks. That can be enough for generated reports, simple letters, or other documents whose content is primarily text.
The same README says it does not support images, headers, footers, page numbers, footnotes, or editing an existing DOCX. If your requirements include those features, a deliberately limited implementation may require substantial extra format work; choose a library or another established workflow instead of assuming the minimal package can be extended by changing the file extension.

How the browser download flow works
Once your code has produced a valid DOCX archive, the browser can offer it as a download without sending document content to a server. The docx-lite README demonstrates creating a Blob, making an object URL, and clicking an anchor with a .docx download name. The critical part is that the Blob must contain the correctly packaged DOCX bytes; the filename does not convert HTML or plain text into a Word document.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Build the OOXML document parts and package them into a ZIP archive.
- Create a Blob from the resulting bytes, using the DOCX MIME type if your implementation specifies one.
- Create an object URL for that Blob.
- Trigger a download from an anchor whose
downloadattribute ends in.docx. - Revoke the object URL when it is no longer needed.
For the library route, use the documented browser export API: Packer.toBlob(file) returns a promise resolving to a Blob. The exact way you construct the document depends on the features your application needs and the library version you install.

Check browser and project constraints before choosing
The docx-lite README lists TextEncoder, Blob, Uint8Array, and DataView as requirements. It reports minimum browser versions of Edge 79, Chrome 38, Firefox 19, and Safari 10.1. Those figures are the project’s own compatibility claims, not independent test results; check them against the browsers your users actually run.
- Strict package prohibition: a hand-built implementation is the relevant path; a package with no external runtime dependencies still adds a package.
- Document features: compare your needs with the documented feature set, especially for images, page furniture, footnotes, and existing templates.
- Build and content-security requirements: confirm whether your deployment permits the scripts and bundling needed by your chosen implementation.
- Document size and complexity: a small text document is a more suitable target for a minimal implementation than a large or richly formatted file.
- Reader compatibility: open generated files in the Word-compatible applications your users rely on; the cited project pages do not establish independent interoperability testing.
How much code and file size should you expect?
Writing the package yourself avoids depending on a third-party library, but moves format maintenance and edge-case handling into your code. A focused project can reduce that burden by providing a limited implementation, though its capabilities remain bounded by what it supports.

docx-lite reports a size of 18 KB minified and 6 KB over the wire, with measurements identified in its README as from August 2026. Those are self-reported project figures, not independent benchmarks. The README also gives a project example for a 500-page document: 48 KB using its fixed-Huffman compression, 30 KB with zlib’s more thorough compression, and 3.4 MB with parts stored uncompressed. These example figures are not general performance guarantees; actual output depends on document content and implementation.

Bottom line on a true no-package DOCX
A browser can create and download a DOCX without a server or third-party package, but only if your code builds a real ZIP-based OOXML package. For a narrow, text-oriented feature set, hand-written generation or a small implementation such as docx-lite can suit a strict dependency constraint. If you need broader document features, the docx library provides a documented browser Blob export, but it is still a package even though its project describes zero external runtime dependencies.
