Pin the Schema Before a Free Model Can Write

Fluent model output is not a database contract. Parse and validate against a versioned server-side schema before writing, and keep contract failures distinct from provider failures.

A model can return fluent text that is still unsafe to save: it may be wrapped in Markdown, omit a required field, or violate a value constraint. Put an API-owned, versioned schema between the provider response and your database. Parse and validate first; persist only accepted data.

Where the contract belongs

A preview in the browser is not a write boundary. Other clients, background jobs, or a changed UI can reach the same API, so validation must run on the server route that controls persistence.

The flow is straightforward: accept the user’s request on your server, call the provider, parse its response, validate the parsed value against your application contract, and only then write it. Keep provider credentials in the server environment rather than exposing them in a browser bundle. The provider URL should also sit behind this server seam, so changing providers does not change the contract your database expects.

Define a versioned contract

For example, a note-generation contract might require a schema version, a summary, and a confidence value:

{
  "schema_version": 1,
  "summary": "A short note about the user's request.",
  "confidence": 0.82
}

In this example, the API’s version-one schema could require all three properties, reject additional properties, require summary to be a non-empty string no longer than 500 characters, and constrain confidence to the inclusive range from 0 to 1. These are example contract choices, not universal or empirically optimal limits.

JSON Schema is a declarative way to describe the structure and constraints of JSON; a separate validator checks an instance against that description. The official documentation covers types and keywords such as required, properties, additionalProperties, minLength, maximum, and pattern. The specification page identifies JSON Schema 2020-12 as the current version at the time of writing: JSON Schema specification and getting started with JSON Schema.

Parse and validate before writing

Treat validation as a gate, not as an invitation to silently repair the response. A response enclosed in Markdown fences is not the JSON object your API contract accepts. Reject it rather than stripping fences behind the caller’s back; likewise reject invalid JSON, missing fields, an empty summary, or values outside declared constraints.

  1. Call the provider. Keep the provider request and its credentials on the server.
  2. Parse the returned body. If it is not valid JSON, record the attempt as a parse failure.
  3. Validate the parsed value. Check the schema version and every declared constraint. If validation fails, record the rejected attempt and do not update the successful-note field.
  4. Persist only on acceptance. Store the parsed value with its schema version after it passes the gate.

The persistence details depend on your database and ORM; the important invariant is that a rejected attempt cannot mutate the field reserved for accepted notes. Record enough context to investigate failures, including the schema version and relevant provider status, while handling prompts and user content according to your privacy and retention requirements.

Keep contract rejection separate from provider failure

There are two different failures to observe. A provider timeout, unavailable service, or unsuccessful transport is a provider-side failure. A response that arrives but cannot be parsed or validated is an application-contract rejection. They should remain distinguishable in logs, metrics, and the error your API returns.

One possible design is to return HTTP 422 for a contract rejection and 502 for a provider failure. Those codes are design choices in this example, not universal HTTP requirements; choose statuses that fit your API conventions and document them consistently. Avoid blindly retrying a response that exists but violates the schema: the retry may consume a limited allowance without making a broken prompt or unsuitable contract useful. If you choose to repair or retry, define that behavior explicitly and test it rather than allowing silent coercion.

Keep local fixtures beside the route

Before switching providers or depending on a free inference pool, exercise the same server-side gate with small deterministic fixtures. These tests check your application contract without requiring a live provider call.

  • A fenced Markdown response fails.
  • A valid JSON object with the expected fields and in-range values passes.
  • An object with an empty summary fails.

These cases catch basic parsing and constraint regressions. Add fixtures for other rules your application actually declares, such as missing fields or additional properties, and assert that rejected attempts leave accepted records untouched.

Structural validity is not business validity

A schema can establish that a value has the expected shape and meets its declared constraints. It cannot establish that the summary is factually correct, that the user is authorized to take an action, or that the content is safe or suitable for a particular operation.

The JSON Schema documentation explains that arbitrary code and some relationships cannot be expressed in the schema language; complex formats commonly need structural validation followed by semantic validation in general-purpose code. Put checks such as ownership, authorization, cross-field business rules, and operation-specific safety in that second phase. A response passing JSON Schema is not by itself permission to execute an action.

Change the contract deliberately when providers change

Provider-native structured-output modes may help constrain generation where a provider supports the schema features you need. They do not remove the API’s responsibility to verify the response before persistence. When comparing that option with application-side parsing and validation, consider schema support, how your server verifies output, portability across providers, failure observability, latency and quota behavior, and the cost of rejection versus repair. The cited implementation example demonstrates application-side validation; it does not establish which providers support which structured-output features.

Keep the provider endpoint and credentials behind the server boundary, and verify any provider’s current endpoint, limits, and terms from its own primary materials. Free capacity is not an SLA: rate limits, empty content, or apology text are possible failure modes, not measured frequency claims. The September 24, 2026 article by kongkong that motivates this design describes MonkeyCode as having free model access and a free server option based on an outreach brief, but says those terms were not re-checked against a primary page. Current availability and terms therefore remain unverified here. Its example endpoint, example.invalid, is explicitly a placeholder, not a usable service address.

Version the contract rather than silently reinterpreting old records. Store the schema version with attempts and accepted data. If a later version changes the meaning or requirements, decide explicitly how to handle earlier records; adding a second model and backfilling stored notes is one possible migration approach, not a universal requirement.
